Letters from the Editors It’s probably fair to expect one’s last few months of senior year to be a particularly angsty time. Maybe it’s my tendency towards overdramatic melancholy, maybe it’s the pandemic, maybe it’s the after-dark tornado warnings. But this spring has wrought a unique bundle of restlessness, recklessness, and nostalgia that’s made me see the world a bit differently. Only when everything is slipping through our fingers do we realize how much we liked the feel of it in our palms, and I can’t shake the gnawing feeling that I haven’t gotten to be young for long enough. We’re on to bigger things. But everything big is made up of parts, and it’s those little moments, places, and habits that we’ve strung together to get this far. Class discussions run off the rails; impromptu, hours-long FaceTime calls with friends on Thursday nights; balmy, languorous summer evenings spent denying the fact that we’re all getting older. And although we may all be spending most of our time differently from here on out, that general principle doesn’t stop here. So as we look back longingly on our own revisionist histories, as we navigate the simultaneous malaise and exhilaration of the coming months, we can stay present by holding onto the comfort of “the little things.” Congratulations, 2020. Try not to miss it. - Anisa Khatana Editor in Chief If COVID-19 has made me realize one thing, it’s how different each one of our lives are. After the school closed, we all went home to different people, atmospheres, and responsibilities. As we, the Class of 2020, continue our lives past senior year, I want to remind everyone how powerful our differences can be. We all play a role in keeping society running. We all are essential to the lives of the people around us. We all have individual dreams we want to pursue. It can be hard to not be swayed by the singular definition of success that has been broadcasted to us from birth. But, life holds more possibilities than what a lot of us were exposed to in our little bubble at Sycamore. No matter what college you choose or path you elect after high school, I hope you feel confident in your ability to define happiness and success for yourself. I hope you decide what your life will look like and never allow comparison to get in your way. Here’s to the next four. - Harsitha Kalaiarasan Design Editor
COVID-19 presented a unique challenge for us, unlike anything any of us had ever anticipated. Though we all went through the same struggle, we all had different ways of dealing with it. Some of us canceled our spring break plans, while others of us went on tropical vacations. Some of us took Governor DeWine’s “Stay at Home” order literally, while others of us looked for loopholes. Some of us had daily calls with our friends, while others of us spent time with our families. Some of us became TikTok famous, while others of us focused on school work. Some of us started our separation from high school early, while others of us fought to keep that connection alive. No matter how we handled it, we all were in it together and that’s what made our class special. The fact that even after being separated from each other and dealing with such a huge obstacle in different ways, we will continue to be Sycamore High School’s Class of 2020. I know we’ll be great. - Henry Loeb Director of Social Media Engagement
When I first moved to Ohio, in fifth grade on the Orange Team, I was afraid to speak my mind; I went with the flow of activities or decisions just because the people around me were doing it. I always find myself looking back at those times, cringing and thinking how much better I would’ve felt overall if I could just tell myself back then to express how I was feeling and thinking. I know how cliche that sounds, but it was very real. In high schol, I was finally able to break that habit and start to become more comfortable with my mind, and I learned that our ability to speak our minds is what separates humans from any other species. It is what separates chaos from order. It is important for us to speak our minds in order to move forward and progress as a culture. No matter what, you must not be fearful about the outcome; as smart or as dumb as what you want to say may be, stick with it. It is your opinion and thoughts and you shouldn’t fear what others may say or think. “Sometimes you need to be a lion in order to be the lamb you really are.” I recently heard this quote in Dave Chappelle’s Mark Twain Prize acceptance speech, and it really resonated with me and how I want to live my life. I don’t want to argue with anybody, but if I feel that my opinions are under attack or I don’t agree with something that’s going on, I will fight and growl to have my voice heard, in order to relax and be myself. So as we all move on and roll with the changes ahead, don’t lose yourself in the crowds you may find yourself in. Let your thoughts and opinions be heard. Not only will speaking your mind help you learn about yourself; in a way, it can help you, well, be you. - Jack Munoz Staff Writer
SENIOR LEAF 147
For the past 13 years, we have been a family. We support, comfort, and cherish the people and the bonds we have created over the years. We had some unforgettable memories from field day in elementary school to move up day at Greene. We even had a class pool party at the Rec for eighth-grade day. High school came around and we made even more memories, from winning Kona Ice freshman year but not receiving it until a few years later, to the senior cookout, senior Halloween and all those memories in between. We have also gone through some rough times together; when we started elementary school the stock market crashed, when high school rolled around school shootings were the new norm, and as we are ending our high school journey, we are living in a world of the unknown with the coronavirus. If we have learned anything from our time together it is that we are all in it together and we will continue to fight together—because once an Ave, always an Ave. - Gabby Khodadad Sports Broadcaster
As we are winding down to our last couple weeks of school, it is easy to already move on towards the future. Sure, it is good to be excited about what is to come, but don’t let those feelings cut off the present. Even if we can’t be together in person, that doesn’t mean we can’t continue to support each other. Keep making memories together and cherish the time we have left before we all have to move on from high school. And as we continue on with our lives, every once in a while stop to remember your friends who you grew up with. You will go on to make new memories that will make you laugh, smile, and even cry sometimes. Share these memories and enjoy the never-ending possibilities you have. It can be easy to grow apart, but even as the distance increases, try to stay connected. Your fellow Aves have helped you this far, and just because we are graduating does not mean they are done yet. Keep hold of each other, and support one another as we develop into adults. You all deserve this, and I wish you the best of luck, Class of 2020. - Lindsey Brinkman Managing Editor
I am so proud of all of us. It’s no secret that we’ve gone through some crazy situations; from stumbling through our first days as a freshman to unexpectedly losing our last quarter of our senior year, we’ve pushed ourselves through and held our heads high. As we near graduation and head towards our separate paths, I strongly emphasize carrying this positive attitude, no matter our destination. Our resilience and open hearts can overcome all obstacles, as seen by the ones we’ve gone through this year. When we come back ten years later for a high school reunion, I can tell we’ll be full of surprises. Each of us have our own dreams and ambitions, and we can truly achieve them all. So let’s reach for the impossible and fly high—after all, that’s what Aviators do. - Linya Guo Entertainment Editor
It is weird to think that when we were entering high school in August of 2016 we felt like the world was crazier than ever. We were just coming off of a summer of Pokemon Go and Jay-Z cheating on Beyonce; we were making “mannequin challenge” videos and learning the dance to “Juju on that Beat”. But perhaps nothing was crazier than the intense political circus gearing up towards the presidential election in November. But if 2016 was crazy… what word possibly comes close to summing up life now? In 2016 Kanye West dropped “Life Of Pablo” and got into an intense feud with Taylor Swift; in 2019 he dropped “Jesus is King” and gave Church services. In 2016 Prince Harry and Megan Markle began dating; in 2020 they formally distanced themselves from the responsibilities of the crown. In 2016 Vine began to shut down, and in 2020 we are reliant on TikTok for the latest viral videos. I think “crazy” was a good word to describe the culture in 2016; now I think “crazy” has just become the status quo. The shock value in what our politicians tweet has disappeared; we have Face ID and Disney+ and more technology than we could ever imagine… oh and I am writing this letter in the midst of a global pandemic, nostalgic for the freshman version of myself that believed I would spend my last few months of high school AT my high school. But it is not all bad. Diversity and education have been pushed to the forefront of our lives. If someone went back in time and told 2016 me that a 17-year-old girl was leading the climate movement, that for the first time a foreign-language film won best picture at the Oscars, and that Mattel released the first gender-neutral dolls, I do not know if I would have believed them. I know this is not the year we expected. But then again, what did we expect? Even in the midst of a crisis, Instagram challenges go viral encouraging us to post pictures of ourselves, our dogs, and everything in between. New music is released like Troye Sivan’s “Take Yourself Home” reminding us all of the importance of social distancing. Saturday Night Live premiered its “at home” episode featuring cast members performing from their bedrooms. People share DIY mask tutorials online and share ways to donate and send help to healthcare providers. That is why I love pop culture. It stops for no man, woman, child, or disease. It bends, and stretches, and changes forms to fit a society that does the same. When we try to describe what it was like to be a senior in 2020, I know that these moments in pop culture will again flood my memory with the feelings of turbulence of the year. - Lydia Masset Managing Web Editor Designed by Henry Loeb
