s Prince of Peace preschooler Hailey Sloane Selock found a pair of pink slippers that were a perfect fit at the Give-and-Get exchange. After hours of setting up the Give-and-Get winter clothing exchange at Prince of Peace, organizer Jackson McElroy (third from the right) and his helpers took a break to try on some of the winter-wear donations. LATHE — Prince of Peace parishioners here were exchanging more than a sign of peace at church this past weekend. They were trading shoes, coats, hats — and just about anything else they might need to keep warm. They weren’t just trading among themselves, however. They invited the entire community to join in. For the second year in a row, the parish Give-and-Get winter clothing exchange was an enormous success — all thanks to former students who were willing to reunite for a good cause. Last year, during a much colder winter, St. Thomas Aquinas, Overland Park, freshman Jackson McElroy was in eighth grade at Prince of Peace School. He kept thinking about something his mom told him — that there were people in his community who didn’t have adequate warm clothing. He also thought about his fellow parishioners who had warm clothes they were tired of and might like to give away. And he wondered if there was some way the two could get together. “So I made an outlined idea of what I wanted to do,” he said. “And then I had a meeting with my friends to set up a store where people could shop for free.” Prince of Peace was happy to donate the space for the students’ store, and parishioners were happy to donate the winter items. Weeks before the store was scheduled to open, students spoke after Masses and passed out grocery bags for parishioners to fill with shoes and winter clothes. “The bags were amazing encouragers and reminders to donate,” said Jackson. “We stapled notes on the back explaining what we were doing.” Jackson and his friends were overwhelmed by the donations they received. They spent hours organizing items on racks and tables. “We put a lot of effort into it, “said
