This is an affront to religious freedom and to conscience, as religious employers will be required to purchase health care plans for their employees that provide these morally objectionable products and services. The false voice of same-sex civil arrangements

False voices in today’s society assault God’s beautiful plan for marriage — which has both its unitive and procreative purpose. husband strives to imitate Christ’s love for his church, and the wife strives to imitate the church’s love for Christ (cf.

Eph 5). The symbol of this great love is the cross, as Jesus gave his life for you, for me, for us all. The end of this great love is genuine happiness, as the spouses delight in each other in good times and in bad.

God’s way also calls a married couple to “be fruitful and multiply” (Gn 1).

Children, another purpose of marriage, are brought forth in the loving marital act, as the husband and wife become “cooperators with God for giving life to a new human person” (John Paul II, “On the Christian Family in the Modern World”). Children are an extraordinary fruit of the unitive love of the married couple, as husband and wife become father and mother. The blessing of children helps build up the family (the domestic church), brings genuine happiness to a married couple and provides society a future.

Circumstances may require a single parent to raise a child or children. Catholics have a responsibility to pray for and to assist as much as possible such parents who heroically strive to provide

the best possible environment for the physical, emotional and spiritual maturation of their children.

The false voice of contraception and sterilization God’s beautiful plan for marriage and family is under assault in our society by false voices, including, for example, the lie of contraception and sterilization. Contraception breaks the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital embrace, as the spouses say “no” to God’s design of love and fertility. On the surface, contraceptives provide a technological attempt, with many risks and dangers, to control the fertility of the couple. Yet this control prevents the complete self-giving that the spouses promised each other at their wedding. Chemicals or barriers thwart the couple’s heartfelt desire for genuine intimacy. Elective sterilization takes away the gift of fertility, similarly rejecting God’s way.

A married couple planning their family may choose morally acceptable means

The complementarity of male and female is intrinsic to God’s design of marriage, fertility and children. Jesus himself taught that marriage is for a male and a female, as “a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Mt 19). Legislators and courts cannot redefine this spiritual and biological reality. The U.S. bishops explained clearly: “By attempting to redefine marriage to include or be made analogous with homosexual partnerships, society is stating that the permanent union of husband and wife, the unique pattern of spousal and family love, and the generation of new life are now only of relative importance rather than being fundamental to the existence and well-being of society as a whole” (“Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan”).

A child deserves, if at all possible, to have a mother and a father. It is tragic that in some states Catholic Charities has been forced to cease providing adoption and foster care services because of the insistence that children under its care only be placed with a married husband and wife in a stable and healthy relationship, and not with same-sex couples.

The legislative and legal effort to establish same-sex unions in our country is not just one issue among many for Catholic voters. As Pope Benedict XVI said in 2006, “Recognition and promotion of the natural structure of the family — as a union between a man and a woman based on marriage” is, like opposition to abortion, “nonnegotiable.”

The rally is an unprecedented response to an attempt by the current administration to impose what some have called the most religiously oppressive government directive in modern American history.

“The bishops want to send a clear message that Catholics are not going to take the Obama administration’s unprecedented attack on religious liberty lying down,” said Michael Schuttloffel, executive director of the Kansas Catholic Conference. “We fully understand the implications of what the administration has done, and I suspect that people . . . understand that this is only the first step.”

In January, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued new regulations as part of the new Patient Protection and Affordability Act. Despite assurances from the president that the conscience rights of Catholics and others would be protected, the new regulations instead trample those rights, resulting in a loss of Catholic identity for many institutions, heavy fines for others, greater difficulty in practicing the faith in the larger society, and a new definition of the church that effectively will lead to its marginalization and restriction.

Wanted: Rally leaders

“The Obama administration’s policy requires Catholic individuals and institutions to pay for products and services that they believe are immoral,” said Schuttloffel. “Catholic employers will be forced to provide their employees with health plans that cover contraception, sterilization and even abortion-inducing drugs.”

The threat to the church is very real, he said. The HHS mandate is already law and will begin to take effect for some businesses and Catholic institutions beginning Aug. 1. If anything, to this point Catholics

have underreacted.

“The bishops want a restoration of governmental respect for the First Amendment and the principle of religious freedom,” said Schuttloffel. “We impose nothing on others. After all, the church has no force with which to bind. We simply do not want the government imposing a radically secularist ideology on us by using the coercive power of the state.”

Parishes and Catholic organizations are mobilizing throughout the state for the June 29 Rally for Religious Freedom at the state Capitol in Topeka.

The bishops are asking each parish and Catholic organization or group to maximize their efforts by doing two things.

The first is to appoint a rally leader. Rally leaders (in parishes with the approval of pastors) recruit and help people get to the rally. Those who want to be rally leaders, or have questions, can contact Bill Scholl at (913) 647-0317 or by email at: socialjustice@archkck.org.

The second is to arrange transportation.

The archdiocese has negotiated a special rate with First Student Charter Bus Rental.

For $60 an hour, a parish or organization can take a group of up to 47 passengers from a parish to the rally drop-off site.

The cost is reasonable — 40 people could ride the bus for about $10 per rider.

Bus payments are due by June 22. For more bus information, contact Scholl.

Archbishop calls Catholics to the Capitol

ANSAS CITY, Kan. — Last year, President Obama assured Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York that provisions in the new Patient Protection and Affordability Act would not impede the church.

Cardinal Dolan took the president at his word.

On Jan. 20, the cardinal and the whole church were stunned when U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced new regulations concerning preventive care in the new health care law.

The new regulations would force Catholic entities to provide to their employees, through their insurance plans, contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs — in violation of the Catholic faith.

A religious exemption was provided, but it redefined the church’s role so narrowly as to be useless — and even worse, it would marginalize and restrict the church’s witness role in the larger society.

Cardinal Dolan said he felt “terribly letdown, disappointed and disturbed.”

Other bishops had stronger words.

With the assistance of the laity, they began to organize a resistance.

One major effort is the “Fortnight for Freedom,” a 14-day period between June 21 to July 4 during which the U.S. bishops are trying to rally the faithful.

As part of the national effort, the bishops of Kansas plan a “Rally for Religious Freedom” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on June 29 on the south steps of the state Capitol.

In this interview, Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann talks about what some have called “the coercion mandate” and why Catholics must fight it.

Q. Archbishop, what’s truly at stake if the U.S. Department of

Health and Human Services mandate is fully implemented?

A. It jeopardizes the church’s ability to function in the public square. In one sense, it’s saying we can have a religious exemption if we don’t serve other people. Traditionally, for instance, has Catholic Charities asked people if they are hungry or homeless and Catholic before we’ll care for them? No. But now [the Obama administration] is saying unless we ask them if they’re Catholic, and only serve and employ Catholics, that’s the only way we’ll get an exemption.

Q. So where does this leave us?

A. The church could choose not to offer health insurance to its em-

ployees, which would force them to go into the government plans. This goes against what the president said — i.e., that if you like your present plan, you can keep it. It would also impose severe financial penalties on the church for not providing health insurance to its employees.

It would challenge the Catholic character of some of our institutions.

If Catholic Charities and Catholic hospitals wanted to continue to offer health insurance to their employees, [it would] go against their deeply held convictions.

It’s an effort on the government’s part to force institutions and private individuals to go against their conscience. And there’s absolutely no reason for it other than the sheer exercise of raw power on the part of the federal government. This is absolutely and totally unnecessary, other than the president has chosen to do this.

A. That’s a total reversal of reality. The church is merely trying to

protect itself and its rights to exercise its belief and live according to its conscience, and individual Catholics live according to their conscience. This is not something we precipitated. This is something the government chose to do. The question is: Do we just acquiesce, or do we stand up for our rights as Americans?

Q. What message would Kansas Catholics send by the quality of the turnout at the rally?

A. Many people have told me, “Archbishop, we’re concerned. What

can we do?” Of course, they’ve been urged to contact HHS, the president, their senators and U.S. representatives about this issue. But the rally gives us a concrete way to band together in a public way to have our voices heard.

George Weigel, noted author and biographer of Blessed John Paul II, received an honorary DocGeorge Weigel tor of Humane Letters degree and delivered the commencement address. Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the ceremony.

Archbishop Naumann, who had been the homilist and principal celebrant at the baccalaureate Mass the day before, won the crowd with a brief and endearing speech. Recalling the days of the Cold War and President John F. Kennedy’s famous remark in Berlin, “Ich bin ein Ber-

liner” (“I am a Berliner”), the archbishop said he was proud to hold a degree from Benedictine College along with the other graduates in the gym.

“Today, I believe, Benedictine College is really on the forefront of the new evangelization and so, I don’t think there is any greater honor . . . than to say, ‘I am a Raven,’” he said to a cheering crowd.

That same day, Archbishop Naumann blessed the hands of the new nurses at Benedictine’s first-ever pinning ceremony, and the new engineers were welcomed into the Order of the Engineer at their own special ceremony.

Three deacons ordained to proclaim the truth of Christ

TOPEKA — The three newest archdiocesan deacons were told that they, as living symbols, proclaim the truth of Christ with a power beyond words.

Nathan Paul Haverland, Daniel Patrick Schmitz, and Quentin Tyler Schmitz were ordained to the transitional diaconate on May 19 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish in Topeka.

“You are allowing the Lord to use you to become living signs and symbols of the truth of his Gospel,” said Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann in his homily. “Your life from this day forward proclaims with a force and a power that mere words cannot, that Jesus Christ is real and that he is indeed Our Lord and Savior.”

Archbishop Naumann was the homilist and ordaining minister. The concelebrants included Archbishop Emeritus James P. Keleher, Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB, Father Randy Soto of KenrickGlennon Seminary in St. Louis, and approximately 25 priests of the archdiocese.

The time the three men serve as deacons before their ordination as priests will be short, Archbishop Naumann noted. And yet the vestment of the deacon, the dalmatic, is the symbolic foundation of their new life.

“It is no accident the ministry of deacon is the entrance into the ordained ministry,” said the archbishop. “The priest and the bishop do not cease being deacons. One of the requests [the ordinands] had for me today was to make sure I wore my dalmatic, as if I didn’t have enough layers of vestments.”

The diaconate is the foundation of the ordained ministry because of its fundamental call to a life of service, said the archbishop.

In addition to their commitments to lead lives of service, the new deacons also made commitments to lives of celibacy and obedience to the archbishop and his successors — all in contradiction to the values of this world, said the archbishop.

ANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Cathedral of St. Peter was so packed for the ordination of Father Oswaldo J. Sandoval here on May 26, that people crowded the vestibule and lined the walls up to the confessionals.

Clearly, Father Sandoval has a huge fan club. And a lot of relatives.

And this was demonstrated not only by the large turnout, but also by the resounding “Thanks be to God” and thundering applause during the election of the candidate.

“I think the people approve of Oswaldo,” deadpanned Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, before his homily.

The archbishop acknowledged the Latino heritage of the ordinand by delivering the homily in both English and Spanish, with the help of Father Kent O’Connor, pastor of Our Lady of Unity in Kansas City, Kan. Father Sandoval, 34, a native of El Salvador and former resident of Emporia, is the sole priest to be ordained this year for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. He promised his obedience to Archbishop Naumann and his successors, had his hands anointed with the sacred chrism, and was ordained a priest through the ancient rite of the laying on of hands.

The archbishop gave the newest priest of the archdiocese solid advice on how to make him happy: Emulate a pro.

“Monsignor [Michael] Mullen celebrated today the 50th anniversary of his own priestly ordination in this same cathedral,” said the archbishop. “I told Oswaldo earlier this week, ‘Just be a priest like Msgr. Mullen for the next 50 years and I will be completely satisfied!’”

“What a beautiful testimony, Mario and Dora, to the fruitfulness of your marriage and family life!” said the archbishop. “Thank you again for being Oswaldo’s first teachers of the faith by the

beautiful example of your lives.”

The archbishop also thanked those who played major roles in fostering Father Oswaldo’s vocation, including Father Dan Gardner, pastor of All Saints Parish in Kansas City, Kan.; Father Jerry Arano-Ponce, pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Roeland Park; Father Brian Schieber, former vocations director and now pastor of Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish in Topeka; Father Mitchel Zimmerman, archdiocesan vocations director; and Msgr. Michael Mullen, co-director of seminarians and pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Kansas City, Kan. He also recognized representatives of Conception and Kenrick-Glennon seminaries. Father Sandoval studied at Conception Seminary College in northwest Missouri from 2003 to 2008, and at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis from 2008 to 2012. Father Sandoval was ordained to the transitional diaconate on May 21, 2011, at St. Peter Cathedral.

Archbishop Naumann was ordaining minister and main celebrant. Archbishop Emeritus James P. Keleher and approximately 70 priests concelebrated.

A number of permanent deacons and some 30 seminarians were also present.

As his parents looked on, Father Sandoval was vested by Father Dan Gardner who, as pastor of St. Catherine Parish in Emporia, had a great influence on the ordinand’s vocation. Father Sandoval then left his family’s pew and ascended the altar steps, joining the archdiocesan presbyterate as a concelebrant for the Mass.

Before the dismissal, Archbishops Naumann and Keleher received the first blessings of the newly ordained. Father Sandoval’s first assignment will be as parochial vicar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Topeka.

There was a reception for Father Sandoval, all clerics, family, parishioners and friends in the parish hall after the Mass.

Those who struggle with same-sex attractions, all children of God, are called to a life of chastity. A key is to develop chaste friendships and to be supported by parish and family as children of God worthy of respect and compassion. Our chaste Jesus gives the grace and strength we all need to live within his plan for human sexuality. The sacraments of reconciliation and the holy Eucharist will help. The blessed ministry of the Courage Apostolate is a wonderful resource (http://couragerc.org).

The false voice of pornography The false voice of pornography is very destructive to marriage and family.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the evil of pornography: “It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others” (CCC, No. 2354). Pornography is often addictive, and many adults, teens and even children are ensnared in its false appeal. In the public forum, let

us strive to restrict the spread of this obscenity in our society. A helpful resource to combat pornography is the “My House Freedom from Pornography Initiative” (http://www.loveisfaithful. com), sponsored by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

The false voice of cohabitation or ‘trial marriages’ Many couples today are cohabiting before marriage (http://foryourmar riage.org/catholic-marriage/churchteachings/cohabitation). Their physical desire for sexual intimacy seems to convince them that they “try out” marriage by “living together.” Other couples believe the lie of the “hook-up” culture, treating sex as recreation or a salve for loneliness, thus sinfully distorting God’s gift of human sexuality. Some even try to rationalize the sin of cohabitation as “a way to save money.” Yet a decision to “try out marriage” is contradictory, since God’s design for marriage is a committed, lifelong covenant. Most couples who cohabit end up separating, resulting in many emotional scars. Often an individual then falls into another “trial” relationship, which again breaks up, and the cycle of trauma continues.

The virtuous solution is to follow God’s design: The man and the woman stay chaste, developing their emotional, familial, and spiritual knowledge of

each other, and giving of themselves in physical intimacy on their wedding night. This will bring the husband and wife the joy of dedicating themselves to each other completely, for the whole of life. God will give the couple the grace to grow in this true intimacy, his gift of married love and children.

One. At times we just don’t know what to do. Let us listen to the voice of Jesus speaking to us through the teachings of the Catholic Church. Let us trust in our Savior. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and his truth will set us free (Jn 14; Jn 8). Our risen Lord loves us more than we can ask or imagine.

The true voice of Jesus: Do not be afraid; The truth will set us free For Catholics, the defense and support of marriage and family are not “side issues” that distract from the more significant issues of the economy or foreign policy. Marriage is the foundation of the family and strong family life is the foundation for our nation. Threats to the very nature and vitality of marriage place our culture and society in serious jeopardy.

Jesus Christ pours forth his grace on us, that we may listen to his true voice about marriage and family life. This voice is heard in our hearts. Listening to the Lord’s voice is crucial as we prepare for the upcoming election. Jesus exhorted us many times in the Scriptures: “Do not be afraid” (cf. Lk 12). At times we are fearful of offering public witness on behalf of Catholic moral teaching in the midst of a culture that is often hostile to our values. At times we are tempted by the false voices of society and of the Evil

Event to draw young adults for night of adoration, church involvement

“The archbishop wants to get together with young adults to meet them, to talk to them, to do a little questionand-answer,” said Matt Karr, lead consultant for the archdiocesan office of evangelization and Catholic formation of adults.

“The archbishop is going to talk to young adults about how really important they are to the church and how he cares for them and how Christ cares for them,” added Karr.

MissionKC — a collaboration between the archdiocese and St. Paul’s Outreach, based in West St. Paul, Minn., to engage young adults in the church — as well as several youth ministries, the Little Sisters of the Lamb and others, are involved in organizing the event.

“Archbishop Naumann has a desire to serve the young adults of the diocese and to be with them, to encourage them, to shepherd them,” said Sam Schoenfelder with St. Paul’s Outreach, which is a Catholic evangelization campus ministry that also works with young adults.

The age range covered by the term “young adult” is wide, ranging from college age to people launching careers, or even marrying and starting families, said Schoenfelder.

Married, single, student, professional — any and every young adult is welcome on the night of Trust One Greater.

“There’s going to be real meat delivered in the message and it’s going to be a powerful experience with the Lord that will be encouraging for all of us,” Schoenfelder said.

This is a “tremendously dynamic time” in people’s lives, Schoenfelder continued. From one year to the next, there can be tremendous changes.

The Trust One Greater event starts at 7 p.m., and there will be time for attendees to socialize afterward.

“If you’re a young adult age 18 to 35 and you’re looking for life in the church, I would encourage you to get to the heart of the church where the life is,” Schoenfelder said. “And this night is going to be an expression of that life.”

It’s just the first of several such events that will take place during the next several months within the archdiocese.

“There’s a tremendous amount of need for the church to say to [young adults], ‘Hope in God — he has a good plan for your life; trust in him; rely on him, he’s with you,’” said Schoenfelder.

“So this is our effort to start sharing that with this crowd.”

Please, no more; I’m stuffed

’m afraid to drive east on I-70.

Somewhere near the 78th St. exit in Kansas City, Kan., there’s this billboard. And I think its message is directed at me. I can’t tell you the exact wording on it, because I can only bring myself to glance in its direction as I pass by . . . quickly. If I read it too closely, I suspect it will say: “Yes, Mark, this means you!”

The billboard is from Goodwill. It shows a pile of clothes stacked to the left and reads something like: If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to get rid of it. I’m starting to wonder if my mom, a parishioner, or some Leaven reader paid for that message to get my attention and motivate — or shame — me into finally getting serious about “unstuffing” my life.

Not so coincidentally, three other events have brought that message of “enough is enough” home to me. The first was in late April as I was packing for Ireland. I discovered that I have a closet full of clothes. I only wear about 20 percent of them. I ignore the other 80 percent because most of them last fit me when Paul VI was pope. Apparently, I’m hanging on to these clothes because . . . yeah, there is no good reason.

Event No. 2 was my inability to unearth a note that I’d scribbled down “somewhere” during my Ireland trip to use in this column. It was an interesting tidbit about a weatherman (who might have been James Martin Stagg) who persuaded Gen. Eisenhower to postpone D-Day from June 5 to June 6, 1944, due to inclement weather conditions at the landing sites. This

weatherman might be buried in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin or at least has a plaque there in his memory. But I wouldn’t swear to any of it.

The third disconcerting event happened just last Sunday as I was heading out to a Sporting KC match. Because it was an afternoon game, I was slathering on the Coppertone Sport Breathable Sunscreen, which it turned out I didn’t need after all. That was providential, because I noticed that the expiration date on the sunscreen, so carefully preserved in my medicine cabinet, was June 2011. I suspect that meant its “breathable” days were over, it was no longer ultra sweat- or waterproof and that its UVA/UVB protection was no longer.

It’s tiresome to live so crushed by stuff — things you don’t use, things you can’t even find when you need them, or things that you simply need to toss. With the famous D-Day anniversary on the horizon — and prompted by that billboard and the events detailed above — I’m planning my own D-day, which in military terms merely refers to “an unnamed day on which an operation or offensive is to be launched.”

Well, I’m hereby naming the day — June 1, 2012 — and the offensive — Operation DOT (Donate-Organize-

Toss). Preliminary weather conditions appear to be favorable. The first part of the operation is codenamed CCC or “clothes closet cleanse.” Charitable organizations should be on the lookout for an influx of clean, absolutely wearable clothing; “husky” consumers, however, need not get their hopes up.

I recently watched a brief YouTube video of a guy donating clothes to Goodwill. (OK, it was a really slow night.) Several times he expressed gratitude to God as he boxed up items.

This guy had the right idea and has inspired me. His thankfulness was twofold: first, he was grateful for the use of the items that he was donating; second, he felt blessed to have more than enough to be able to give something away.

As I look around my home, I’m humbled. How often I take for granted the roof over my head, air-conditioning, comfortable furniture, electricity, clean water and plenty to eat. I rarely thank God for the health to be able to see items to donate, have the dexterity to pack them up and the strength to lug the boxes to the car. And I almost never utter a prayer of thanksgiving for reliable and available transportation or for the resources to keep my car running. I’m embarrassed, too, not only at having so much, but because I find it so easy to complain and be so unaware of these tremendous blessings.

Today is D minus 2, just a couple of days before launching Operation DOT. I’ll let you know by summer’s end how things have gone. I’m reasonably certain, though, that my house — and life — will feel a lot less stuffy.

God blessed all nations through Israel

ren’t you lucky? This Sunday at Mass, you will get to hear two homilies, not just one.

Your priest or deacon will preach one of those homilies, at the usual time, after the Gospel reading. But before that, you will hear another homily, during the first reading, from the Book of Deuteronomy (4:32-34, 39-40).

The word “Deuteronomy” means “second law” THE MOST HOLY TRINITY in Greek. EsDt 4: 32-34, 39-40 sentially, that book restates the law of Moses, hence the name. It repeats, explains and elaborates material originally presented in the books of Exodus, Numbers, and Leviticus. But it does so in the form of a long discourse delivered by Moses. In many ways, that discourse resembles a homily. That is how we can say that a section from it will supply you with a second homily this Sunday.

Moses begins his remarks by reminding the Israelites of how God has blessed them. First of all, God has spoken to them, rather than to another nation: “Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?” The specific occasion referred to involves the revelation on Mount Sinai: “Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke, for the Lord came

down upon it in fire” (Ex 10:18).

According to Moses, God has further blessed the Israelites by bringing them out of slavery in the land of Egypt: “Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the Lord, your God, did for you in Egypt before your eyes?”

After reminding the Israelites of these things, Moses draws two conclusions. First of all, there is only one God, the one who has done all these things for them — “the Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other.” Secondly, the Israelites must obey this law which comes from God: “You must keep his statutes and commandments that I enjoin on you today.”

If the people comply with this instruction, then God will reward them.

God will make sure that “you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you forever.”

The Book of Deuteronomy presents Moses’ discourse as one delivered to the people of Israel more than three thousand years ago. But because it has been committed to writing, that discourse echoes down through the centuries. In a sense, Moses is speaking to us as well.

As Christians, we believe that some parts of the law of Moses do not pertain to us. But there are many parts that do, that reflect a universal character binding upon all human beings.

That is why it remains of lasting value to us.

Sunday’s reading emphasizes how Israel is different from the other peoples of the world, how God has blessed them, rather than others. But subsequently, we know that God blessed all the peoples of the world through Israel — above all, through Jesus Christ.

Through him, many have come to know the one God, the one who spoke to Moses so long ago.

atholicism, like the Gospels, is not about abstractions and symbols. It is about the real power of the Savior and his real presence in the world,” said Father Augustine Thompson, OP, professor of history at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology and a member of the core doctoral faculty of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.

That’s why the feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for “the Body of Christ”), celebrated on June 10 this year in the United States, is central to the faith.

The feast, which honors the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, is one of the few celebrations that doesn’t commemorate an event in the life of Jesus or Mary.

Instead, it is dedicated to a fundamental tenet of Catholicism — that Jesus is physically with us in the consecrated bread and wine.

While the reality of Christ in the Eucharist has been part of the faith since the Last Supper, this unique official celebration of the Real Presence didn’t begin until the 13th century.

It was then that a medieval mystic, Juliana of Liège, who had a lifelong devotion to the Eucharist, began petitioning her bishop to institute such a commemorative.

Eventually, the practice spread and, in 1264, Pope Urban IV issued a papal bull, “Transiturus de hoc mun-

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225?1274) is best known for his scholarly writings, but he is also the composer of one of the bestknown hymns used in the honor of the Blessed Sacrament. “Pange Lingua,” originally written for vespers of Corpus Christi, is sung on Holy Thursday when the Blessed Sacrament is taken to the altar of repose. In addition, the last two verses are sung as the Benediction hymn “Tantum Ergo.” Aquinas also wrote the propers and sequence for the Mass of Corpus Christi.

In his proclamation, Pope Urban wrote: “ . . . in this sacramental commemoration of Christ, Jesus Christ is truly present, albeit under another form, He is truly with us in His very own substance. Indeed, as He was about to ascend into Heaven, He said to the Apostles and to their followers: ‘Behold, I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world’ (Mt 28:20), comforting them by the gracious promise, that He would abide and be with them even in his bodily presence.”

What makes this feast even more unusual is that the “feast was first conceived by laypeople, it was promoted by laypeople, and finally the clerics got around to recognizing lay wisdom,” said Father Augustine.

In fact, the “founder,” Juliana of Liège, “was a freelance holy woman — not a nun as the usual versions say,” he added. In addition, Father Augustine points out that the major

promoters of the feast were virtually all women.

The feast is particularly important today, he added, because it shows that the “church needs to listen to the spiritual wisdom of the laity. Today, devotion to the Real Presence by [eucharistic] adoration is again a lay movement. The clergy need to listen more to the Spirit speaking through the laity on matters of piety and devotion.”

Indeed, eucharistic adoration, sometimes called perpetual adoration, is a growing movement throughout the country. Growing out of the practice of venerating the Blessed Sacrament, which occurs in eucharistic processions on the feast of Corpus Christi, the consecrated host is put in a place of honor where the faithful come to spend time in prayer and adoration around the clock.

In his 1965 encyclical, “Mysterium Fidei” (“Mystery of Faith”), Pope Paul VI taught that “The Catholic Church has always offered and still offers the worship of latria (adoration) to the sacrament of the Eucharist, not

only during Mass, but also outside it.

It does so by reserving consecrated hosts with the utmost care, exposing them to solemn veneration by the faithful and carrying them in processions to the joy of great crowds of the faithful” (No. 56).

“Eucharistic adoration is one of the most important ways in which the presence of Christ continues in the church following the celebration of Mass,” explained Father James Patrick Moroney, then-executive director of the USCCB Secretariat for the Liturgy, at a 1998 symposium on adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in St. Louis. “And as such, it is meant both to help us sanctify everything we do and to draw us back to our next celebration of the Eucharist.”

Adoration chapels have been close to the hearts of both Blessed John Paul II, who prayed for a chapel in every parish in the world, and Pope Benedict XVI, who instituted perpetual adoration in each of the six suburbicarian dioceses of Rome.

Currently, there are more than 2500 perpetual adoration chapels around the world. The United States has approximately 1,1000, including at least four in Kansas. St. Joseph Parish in Shawnee is celebrating its 25th year of perpetual adoration on June 9.

While perpetual adoration is a growing devotion in many parishes, the seminal feast of Corpus Christi is an annual reminder that Christ is with his people — not just in memory, but in reality, until the end of time.

Although the feast is not always seen as one of the highlights of the liturgical year, said perhaps it should be, said Father Augustine.

Sanctuary’s of Hope’s annual run set for June 16 KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Sanctuary of Hope’s 13th annual fundraiser, “Run the Good Race,” takes place June 16.

The 5K cross-country race starts at 7 a.m. and climbs 1,000 feet through an adjacent park and SOH trails. A 5K road race starts at 8 a.m. and takes runners along paved roadways near Donnelly College, Bishop Ward High School and through the residential neighborhood surrounding SOH.

“[The road race is] a tough course: downhill at the beginning, flat through the middle, uphill at the end,” said Bill Page, race coordinator. “The cross-country course is hilly, too, as much uphill as the Hospital Hill run in a quarter of the distance. People say it’s a great challenge.”

Both events start and finish on the grounds of Sanctuary of Hope retreat center, located at 2601 Ridge Ave. Registration costs $25 for one

course or $35 to “Do the Double.” Teams of 10 can register for $200. A one-mile noncompetitive walk is also available for $15. Registration deadline is June 13.

A pancake and sausage breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. and is free with run/ walk registration. It is $5 for breakfast only, or $15 for breakfast and a T-shirt.
