It’s Spa Time If the thought of Christmas and the New Year heralds in thoughts of a refreshed, rejuvenated and ready-to-go you, then you’ll want to dip into our Spa collection of hotels.

Whether it’s a quick getaway with a pamper day or a complete unwind to charge the batteries with a longer stay, it’s time to escape the chaos!

It was good enough for an exiled King of France (Louis XVIII) and his court from 1809 to 1814 so a stay at Hartwell House Hotel, Restaurant & Spa in Buckinghamshire is a noble decision! The Grade I listed Jacobean and Georgian House impresses with elegant and spacious reception rooms, decorative ceilings, panelled walls, antique furniture and fine paintings. The spa is housed in a splendid building modelled on an orangery and has a good sized swimming pool, spa bath, steam room, saunas and a well equipped gym (just in case you have a sudden burst of energy). 10

Experienced therapists offer a wide range of treatments using Aromatherapy Associates, BIOEFFECT and Jessica. Our favourite treatments are the Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience which releases tension in every part of the body, stimulates the nervous system and encourages healthy circulation or try the Bespoke Skin Polish for a pre-Christmas glow. A pregnancy massage and post-pregnancy skin nourishment treatment are both available and for men, there’s a choice of three refinery facials. And when you’re finished with treatments, don’t miss the chance to stroll around the hotel’s grounds. The 29 acres of parkland has follies to discover, an old church ruin, statues and a lake, making it an equally therapeutic place to escape to.

Ufford Park Hotel Golf & Spa Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 1QW

Only a short walk from the blue flag award-winning beaches and in a prime location on the prestigious East Cliff in Bournemouth is the Queens Hotel & Spa. Located on the lower ground floor of the hotel, the Forever Gorgeous Day Spa and Clinic has nine treatment rooms and two lounges. Pamper packages using Elemis products can be booked in advance and there are a wide variety of treatments available. Couples pamper packages, best friends, mother and daughter, men, pregnant guests and groups are catered for in the modern, peaceful and welcoming spa which creates a real hideaway atmosphere to unwind. The hotel itself has represented the ultimate in Bournemouth luxury since the 1940s and has an excellent reputation for dining. There’s a choice of restaurants; Alexander’s for a table d’hote menu and the Garden Lounge and Bar for a less formal occasion.

Elemis products and touch therapies provide guests with a complete spa journey. The overnight spa package begins with an indulgent cream tea on arrival followed by a signature therapy session lasting 55 minutes, a three course meal in the AA Rosette award-winning restaurant and full English breakfast the next day.

The Parsonage Hotel & Spa York, North Yorkshire YO19 6LF

The Sunday Sanctuary starts with an afternoon of relaxation and tea, a two course evening meal in The Fat Abbot, accommodation, full English breakfast and then a choice of beauty treatments. Whether it’s relaxation and renewal or a winter refresher, there’s an extensive choice of packages to pick you up, give you a glow and send you off re-energised!

An investment last year of over £400,000 at Kettering Park Hotel has created a simple, stylish and timeless look for the hotel’s spa. With products from Natural ESPA skincare, Jessica nail care and exclusive Natura Bisse products to beautify, and specialist hot stone, anti-cellulite, reflexology, sports massage and Indian head massage treatments to empower well-being, you’ll find your stress and aches dissapear.

Manchester A Postcard from

The UK’s third most visited city is home to the oldest library in the English speaking world, it’s the birthplace of Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the Suffragette movement, and is a major creative centre with architecture, fashion, music, film and the performing arts.

As well as having more rock stars per head than any other British city, Manchester has been incredibly successful with Nobel prizes; so far 25 Nobel Laureates have worked at the University of Manchester and its institutions. Photo by Mike Peel / CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons Photo (The Smiths) by Brett Jordan / CC BY 2.0 Photo (Joy Division) by Wishbook / CC BY-SA 2.0

Joy Division, Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, James, M People, Take That, Simply Red and Elbow are just a few of the bands to emerge from Manchester and if you’re talking music, Factory Records and The Hacienda were the verse and chorus of the city’s music scene in the 1980s and 90s. Photo (The Hacienda) by Robert Scarth / CC BY-SA 2.0

Redeveloped into flats in 2007, artefacts from the famous nightclub and the record label form a collection of old posters and fliers and even the loading bay dock doors are on view, at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (open daily from 10am to 5pm). Hacienda co-owner and New Order bassist Peter Hook had six bass guitars made from the dance floor floorboards, complete with cigarette burns and stiletto heel marks! Film fans and vinyl fanatics will love the Northern Quarter for its numerous record stores and recognisable locations used in big screen hits Alfie, Captain America: The First Avenger and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. There’s also a good variety of bars and cafes and Affleck’s Palace, a former department store is now a multi-story bazaar of alternative clothing, piercings and tattoos. The beautiful sandstone building of Chetham Library dates back to 1421 when it was home to priests from Manchester’s Collegiate Church. Part of Chetham’s School of Music, the library’s collection is of national and international importance with early printed books, manuscripts, diaries, prints and paintings. Exclusive pre-arranged tours are available which take in the main Reading Room where Daniel Defoe, Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Disreali, Karl Marx and Blur front man, Damon Albarn have been among the roll call of the famous to study there. Photo by Parrot of Doom [CC BY-SA 3.0 or GFDL ], via Wikimedia Commons

Never mind the 1476 edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales which is at The John Rylands Library, it’s the stunning architecture of this Victorian Gothic building that leaves the library looking more like a castle or a cathedral, which will truly impress! Cumbrian sandstone and Polish oak plus art nouveau light fittings and radiator grills, vaulted ceilings, stone archways and quiet coves set the scene for quite possibly the greatest read of your life! Photo by Mdbeckwith [CC BY 3.0], via Wikimedia Commons

With Christmas just around the corner, shopping is never a struggle in Manchester. Vivien Westwood, Burberry, Paul Smith, Mulberry and Crombie are just a few of the designer, boutique shops while Selfridges, Jessops and House of Fraser tick the boxes for department store favourites. Head to the Arndale or the Trafford Centre for under-one-roof shopping or the Lowry Outlet Mall at the Salford Quays for 60% off designer shopping. The Grade II listed Manchester Opera House is the city’s largest theatre, seating audiences up to 1,920. With a spacious stage and orchestra pit, big touring musical productions, concerts and ballets are totally at home. Photo by Mike Peel [CC BY-SA 4.0], via Wikimedia Commons

It would be a red card scenario not to mention football in Manchester! With two arch rival teams and two armies of fans, the beautiful game can be celebrated with stadium tours of Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium and don’t forget a visit to the National Football Museum! The four floor shrine to football is full of interactive experiences, discovery zones and memorabilia. Photo by Tatchie from Lisburn, Northern Ireland [CC BY 2.0 ], via Wikimedia Commons

Fine dining, cheap eats, international cuisine and an excellent choice of tea and coffee shops means you’ll never need to miss a meal when in Manchester! Whether you’re after an American grill, Spanish tapas, Indian curry, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Italian or vegetarian, your favourite dishes are on the menu!
