A Postcard from...

Stratford-upon-Avon

On the banks of the River Avon, surrounded by stunning Warwickshire countryside and steeped in 800 years of history, Stratford-upon-Avon is a must for romantics. For lovers of design, technology and science The MAD (Mechanical Art Design) Museum will score highly. Dancing lasers, rolling ball machines, roaring mechanical dinosaur heads and whirligigs with lots of buttons to press keep visitors involved and entertained at this quirky museum which showcases modern and old fashioned machines.

The hop-on hop-off, open top tour bus is an ideal way to discover Shakespeare's life and take in some of the key attractions, from his birthplace to his grave, Anne Hathaway's cottage and the iconic Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Alternatively, the guided walking tours really bring Stratford, Shakespeare and the English language to life in an informative and enjoyable two hours.

Throw down a blanket or hire a deck chair for a romantic picnic in Bancroft Gardens on the south side of the River Avon, sandwiched between the RSC Theatre and canal basin. It's the perfect place to watch the world go by as buskers perform the soundtrack to your day! Catch the riverboat here for a 45 minute gentle journey with pleasant views of the town and countryside or stick to the towpath and walk to Mary Arden's Farm where you'll be taken back to the Tudor era and life on a working farm.

The Play's the Thing is an excellent exhibition from the Royal Shakespeare Company, who share stories and secrets from their 100 years of theatre making in Stratford-upon-Avon. Along with stunning costumes and props from the archives, there's a rare copy of Shakespeare's first folio. Interactive exhibits include the Director's Desk, Magic Costume Mirror and using state-of-the-art gaming, visitors can play Hamlet alongside actor Ewart James Walter.

A Postcard from...

Stratford-upon-Avon If you're looking to pop 'the' question, turn it into a heady proposal and take the lift to the top of the RSC Tower where the viewing platform provides a panoramic view over the town and its historic landmarks. By Lobsterthermidor at en.wikipedia [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

A Capability Brown landscape, stunning parkland, world class art exhibitions, a gift shop and cafĂŠ are a few of the delights at Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park, just nine miles from Stratford-upon-Avon.

Say cheers in The Dirty Duck pub, popular with actors performing at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or enjoy a pint in The Garrick Inn, named after the actor David Garrick. The building dates back to medieval times and is reputedly the oldest pub in Stratford.

The grounds are open for visitors to enjoy from February and the house, galleries and cafĂŠ open again in March, and with permanent and visiting art collections, it's a fantastic day out.

From the Tudor streets, historic buildings, antique shops and museums, cafes and restaurants, there's much to do in Straford-upon-Avon. For romantic accommodation Hallmark Hotel The Welcombe blends tastefully modern with fabulously historic and the Grade II listed Best Western Grosvenor Hotel offers intimate lounges and individually decorated bedrooms. If you fancy a classic country inn, The Kings Head offers a hearty menu of seasonally inspired pub food, well chosen wines and craft ales.
