A big year of community events are planned for the Shropshire town of Telford in 2018 as it celebrates a milestone 50 years old. Named after the civil engineer Thomas Telford, the genius behind many road and rail projects in the county, the new town was created with the merger of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley with many residents moving in from nearby Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

With a rich history and association with the Industrial Revolution, there are plenty of must-see places every visitor to Telford should complete, starting with the landmark Iron Bridge. Erected in 1779 over the River Severn, it is the first ever iron built bridge in the world and the Iron Bridge Gorge Museums are the perfect place to learn more about this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You don’t need to be a science fan, history lover or art enthusiast to appreciate the insightful and informative experience on offer. Take a trip back to Blists Hill, the Victorian town where steam rules, see the craft and creativity behind the tiles Victorians loved and visit the Coalport China Museum which shares some brilliant examples of Coalport and Caughley china. Remember Wenlock from the London 2012 Summer Olympics? The mascot’s name is inspired by the market town of Much Wenlock, where in 1850, the Wenlock Olympian Society held their first Olympian Games, now regarded as the inspiration for the modern day games we know today. With a population of just 3,000 the town feels more like a village and it is well worth a visit for the traditional, independent shops in Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture. Cobbled streets, ancient stocks and whipping posts plus the ruins of Wenlock Priory, just a short walk from the town, will keep visitors more than satisfied.

Trails, galleries and interactivities show the impact iron had on the world at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, step into the Tar Tunnel to see the bitumen spring which still oozes through the tunnel walls today, and of course, walk across the striking Iron Bridge.
Head to Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom for a choice of experiences including Keeper for the Day, Carnivore Combo, Badger Watch and the very popular Meerkat Experience where you can see these eccentric creatures up close and personal! Hand-feeding and helping with the meerkats enrichment is followed by strokes with two very tame meerkats ready for a cuddle. A knowledgeable guide is with you throughout to answer questions and share insights into these amusing animals. At £99 for an hour for two people, it’s a special experience never to be forgotten.
Telford Town Park is a real oasis in the town centre. Cafe culture, children’s play area, a cycle centre, aerial rope course, fishing, a sensory garden, nature and history trails plus the fairytale world of Wonderland are just a few of the reasons the park is worthy of a visit. Voted Britain’s Best Park 2015, it has an active events programme, an amphitheatre, bandstand and visitor information centre.

For panoramic views and an Iron Age hill fort, put your walking boots on and head to the summit of The Wrekin. Rising to a height of 407 metres and formed from various rocks of volcanic origin, the popular walk is steep in places and does give the illusion you’ve reached the top a couple of times before actually summiting! Once there though, you will be rewarded with stunning views over Shropshire so it’s well worth the effort!
