Festival time sees us buying sunscreen, well being the UK we always hedge our bets and make sure we have the wellies and wet weather gear with us too! Our Summer Music Festival season is upon us once more, so whether we love Rock, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Country, Indie or Classical music there is a festival just for us. Glastonbury is probably the biggest and most well known festival in the world, starting on 24th June the population on the site becomes greater than that of Glastonbury itself! Not a fan of this type of festival then let us introduce you to some others that may just ‘tickle your fancy’. The Acoustic Festival Britain takes place at Uttoxeter Racecourse from 19th June until 21st, on four stages it offers a mixture of Folk, Rock, Blues, Country and Blue Grass with headline acts such as Paul Carrack, Big Country, the Beautiful Sound, Nell Brydon and the folk band, Show of Hands. Need a short break from the music? You might like to visit St Mary’s Church in Uttoxeter, this was the Architect Pugin’s
first commission. Pugin himself was an interesting character, most notable for the introduction of the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, he also designed nearby Alton Towers the House not the Theme Park which sits in its grounds! Or how about Sudbury Hall where you’ll find The National Trust’s Museum of Childhood located in Smallwood Manor built in 1886.
In the Elizabethan era the local Lord of the Manor, Sir Christopher Hatton helped to sponsor Sir Francis Drakes expeditions with his most famous ship ‘The Golden Hind’ being named in honour of Hatton whose Coat of Arms includes a Golden Hind.
The town of Wellingborough has many claims to fame; Wellingborough School was established in 1595 and is one of the oldest fee paying schools in the country. In 1939 the Pavilion at the school, somehow acquired the door step of the home of W.C.Grace, which was being demolished at the time, for its own front door step.
Newark-on-Trent as the name suggests has the river Trent running through it from Nottingham and is a navigable waterway where you’ll find many narrow boats meandering its waters with some good pubs and restaurants close by, a Castle to explore and good shopping, it’s a great place to rest after the exertions of the obstacle course.
Mud, mud and more mud is a certainty at Mudfest which considers itself to have one of the muddiest venues, deliberately! This festival held at Newark The 60’s and 70’s more your scene? Then the Scooter and Ska Showground from 13th to 14th Rally Festival is for all you Mods’ June combines a 50 obstacle, Obstacle Course competition with young and old from 12th June to lots of mud, did we mention the the 14th June at the Santa Pod mud? Along with three stages of Raceway near Wellingborough. music, comedy, an ‘Open Mic’ With three stages and Bad session and great bands like Manners head lining it’s ‘Parka’s Toploader headlining. and Scooters’ galore.
One lad who failed the entrance exam to gain a scholarship at the school was H.E. Bates, could this be there ‘Beatles and Decca’ moment?

Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain
The 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be celebrated with flying displays and a host of different events throughout the country, including The Imperial War Museum at Duxford and Biggin Hill; with RAF Cosford Airshow in Shropshire taking place on 14th June The Imperial War Museum at Duxford, on 23rd and 24th May will host a memorable day of flying displays honouring the contribution made by both our own Armed Forces and also those of our Allies to Victory in Europe 70 years ago, alongside tributes to all of those who played a role on the Home Front. As the flying displays don’t begin until the afternoon you’ll have ample opportunity to explore the whole of the museum with its static displays of vintage aircraft including Concorde and its exhibitions honouring those ‘who did their bit on the Home Front’. You’ll be able to shop at the many trade stands and chat to the stallholders who can provide you with a wealth of interesting facts about their wares and much more.
The 75th Anniversary of Battle of Britain begins at Biggin Hill on June 13th with flying displays from many aircraft including the Spitfire and Hurricane, interactive exhibits, an opportunity to meet the Pilots, arena events, a model zone and a craft fair. Biggin Hill in Kent, probably the most well known of the Fighter Bases that served during the Second War. Whilst visiting the station it’s worth taking some time from the flying schedule to take a look at some of the original buildings still on the airfield and St George’s Chapel erected in 1951 as a memorial to the aircrew who flew from there. Although Biggin Hill it is well known as a fighter base what is probably less well known is that it began its life as an experimental base working on early wireless and other systems and continued as an experimental base for much of its early history alongside its defensive role; by 1917 it was operating as part of the London Air Defence Area and housed Bristol Fighters to attack the Zeppelins as they flew over the Kent Coast. Later it was home to many squadrons of Spitfires including 131 Fighter Squadron, the
only squadron of 12 Spitfires bought entirely from donations from the people of Kent. For all you ‘Da Vinci Code’ followers the airport also features in the film of the same name; it’s the airport where Sir Leigh Teabing lands his private jet. Sitting within the London Borough of Bromley, the most rural borough in London, the local area offers great places to visit, eat, drink and relax in, in a number of local towns and villages, so take some time to visit nearby Bromley Common or Chislehurst where you’ll find Camden Place, now Chislehurst Golf Club, the home to Napoleon lll and the Empress Eugenie during their exile; or Chislehurst Caves used as shelters during the second work war, at least one child was born in the caves, she was given the interesting and unique name Cavena. In more recent years the caves have also been used as a film set for Dr Who and as a music venue for musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones and of course the caves are said to be haunted so take care you never know who is behind you!

“Patience and perseverance as things don’t happen overnight.” What are the best thing about your job?
“Building long lasting relationships.”
What is your favourite meal?
“Mussels in a white wine sauce and a chunk of bread.” What are you most passionate about?
“Overall happiness and being settled at work and at home.” Do you have any hidden talents?
What are the worst thing about your job?
“There are never enough hours in the day.” What is the most rewarding thing about working in this industry?
“I used to play the Cello. Played for 8 years at school and a local orchestra which performed at the Royal Albert Hall” What is first CD/record that you bought?
“Seeing the final product once a dinner dance or successful event has finished, seeing happy and refreshed guests and seeing repeat business.” What is the funniest moment you have witnessed whilst at work?
“At a previous hotel I worked in we have a high end VIP guest stay with armed security. Security had to get him through to door, to the lift and in his room very quickly and efficiently.
“Hanson - ‘Mmmm Bop’” What achievements are you most proud of?
“Completing my degree and spending some time in Gambia when I was in my late teens doing charity work. It was a true eye opening experience but upsetting and terrifying at the same time.”
However, the guest wondered off and made a bee line for a breakfast buffet which had been laid out for a booked conference. It was funny to see the security try and lure him away with coffee and get him to the room.”
