Welcome For 19 years, the J. Rhodes Haverty Lecture featured nationally recognized experts in health care discussing relevant health issues with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the local health care community. The lecture was established to honor our founding dean, Dr. J. Rhodes Haverty, who led the college for more than 23 years.

Founded as the School of Allied Health in 1968, the college was named for the mother of Georgia State alumnus and former CEO of Bank of America, Kenneth Lewis. We produce health professionals in nursing, clinical health informatics, dental hygiene, health sciences, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy and respiratory therapy. Our graduates are known for excellent pass rates on licensure examinations. Several of our programs hold a 100 percent pass rate on licensure exams, including those for occupational therapists, doctors of physical therapy and registered respiratory therapists.

If you have received health care in the Atlanta area and throughout Georgia, you have likely been treated by one of our graduates!

Our nursing programs are ranked in the top 100 nationally at the undergraduate, master’s and doctorate (doctor of nursing practice) level according to U.S. News & World Report.

Health Informatics, currently one the fastest growing fields in healthcare, has produced more than 375 graduates since 2015. In spring 2021, we graduated our first class of master’s students in health informatics.

Nutrition students proposed and now manage a campus-based food bank, Panther’s Pantry, for food-insecure Georgia State students. The pantry, now managed by Student Nutrition Services, has access to food from large external food banks.

Our Occupational Therapy master’s degree program is currently transitioning to the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program with the first class enrolled in Summer 2021. The final class of the successful O.T./M. program graduates in Spring 2022.

Two Class of 2020 Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) graduates made the highest possible score on the National Physical Therapy Exam, an 800 out of 800. In addition, physical therapy students assessed and treated more than 900 individuals during the Migrant Family Health Program in south Georgia.

Finally, the Department of Respiratory Therapy received the American Association for Respiratory Care Apex Recognition Award for a second year running, one of only three awards given to higher education institutes nationally for high-quality care.

After the difficulties of 2020, we thought this year’s lecture topic on health disparaties, leadership and the pandemic would particularly resonate with our students, alumni, clinical partners, donors and friends. I hope you enjoy the lecture and share with us your thoughts on improving health care in the future!

David Satcher, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and public health administrator with an extensive track record of leadership, research, and community engagement. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College and holds MD and PhD degrees from Case Western Reserve University, where he was also elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Dr. Satcher served as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States (1998-2002) and the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services (1998-2001). He also served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Dr. Satcher has also held top leadership positions at the Charles R. Drew University for Medicine and Science, Meharry Medical College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He has received over 50 honorary degrees and has received numerous awards from diverse organizations and agencies.

Currently, Dr. Satcher is the Founding Director and Senior Advisor for the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia.

The annual J. Rhodes Haverty Lecture in the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions commemorates the memory and illustrious career of Dr. J. Rhodes Haverty, the founding dean of the School of Allied Health, later the College of Health Sciences, the predecessor to the Lewis College. Dr. Haverty passed away in early 2014.

Dr. Haverty served as dean from 1968 to 1991, following an 11 year medical career in pediatrics. He initially established the college with undergraduate nursing and physical therapy programs, later adding nutrition and respiratory therapy degrees. During his tenure, the college grew into a nationally respected institution, enrolling over 1,000 students per year and employing more than 100 faculty.

Dr. Haverty tirelessly served both Georgia State University and the health care community. He served on the college’s Board of Advisors and the university’s Institutional Review Board. Dr. Haverty was also a trustee of the Georgia Health Foundation, serving as chairman in 1990 and 1991.

In 1994, Dr. Haverty received the Spirit of Life Award from the City of Hope. In 1998, he was cited as the top volunteer by the American Red Cross and was given the Charles R. Drew Award for over three decades of advocacy and community service.

Dr. Haverty received his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1948 and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1953.

He received an honorary doctoral degree from Georgia State University in 2004 and was recognized as a “Star of the South” from Irish America magazine in 2007.
