HEIDI ALBERTIRI FROM THE EDITOR
I think I am one of the luckiest girls around.
Everyday, I wake up and am blessed enough to be able to create my day the way I want. Each day I get to decide what I do for myself, my family and for TLSE.
So as we sit down, ideas exploding for 2018, we are happy to introduce you to the MONTHLY EDIT.
Off the back of THE ANNUAL, we have decided to bring you a curated monthly digital magazine, each month bringing you a new one.
We have fine tuned the way we work this year; as we graduate through the years, so to does the TLSE brand evolve and grow.
For our first Digital issue we have reached out to some of our favourite style makers and asked them to contribute their MUST HAVE ITEMS for 2018. It’s like sitting with a cool friend getting first hand advice on the what and the why on interiors trends.
Our experts are all superstars in their own right, and we’ve loved seeing their picks and being able to share them with you.
Each month we will bring you another batch of extraordinary people. Stay tuned for our Movers and Shakers Edition next month.
But for now, grab that iced tea and settle in for a great read.

I love the design of this piece as it ticks a lot of boxes for me. In my eyes, any ‘must have’ must also serve a purpose and form a bond or connection with the person purchasing the item. For me the Ellis curved benches tick many boxes. Grazia and Co designs scream authenticity, integrity & community in everything they do, and the Ellis is no exception. Conversation. Cosyness Timeless. Beautiful. I don’t just see an outdoor bench when I look at Ellis, I see laughter, red wine and snuggles by the fire telling stories with my favourite people.
The design is timeless and fits with the Australian outdoor lifestyle and ethos, it would also fit easily into a beach house or an inner city courtyard. The blush tones seal the deal for me. Blush tones and variations I feel will continue to stay around, but evolve into rouge and merlot’s; tones of mustard, navy, chocolate, olive and emeralds will stand strong next to these colour combos. Ellis is here for the longterm, He is not one to get for a season and cast aside. And for 2018 you will definitely see the trend moving towards such long term pieces. It seems like we are growing up, as we look to build on and add to the existing beautiful pieces we house. One beautiful piece at a time. @HEIDI_ALBERTIRI | @THE_LIFE_STYLE_EDIT WWW.THELIFESTYLEEDIT.COM.AU LIFESTYLE IMAGE | via GRAZIA&CO A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

My must have item for 2018 has to be these beautiful timber sculptures by Elise Cameron Smith; they represent is a move toward unique, handmade pieces for the home. It might be an original painting or a piece of bespoke furniture. It might be a slip cast bowl or a woollen blanket knitted by someone local. Whatever form the object takes, it will be a thoughtfully constructed piece that enhances an interior with crazygood craftsmanship and beautiful, tactile natural materials. We will see lots of rich timbers and rough clay, signs of the maker and investment pieces that make a statement about what you love. Instead of jamming up our homes with meaningless things, we will decorate conscientiously and slowly, taking the time to appreciate the way items are created. It’s been the home-making approach of many people for years and years, but this year we will see a wider group of home lovers value pieces with meaning. Hopefully, it will be a shift in thought that transcends 2018. Elise’s sculptures appeal to my long-term obsession with timber, my appreciation of midcentury design and a compulsive need to arrange things on shelves. The elegant shapes, made of white beech, will sit beautifully in a vignette or hold court as a single piece in a prime position. Elise’s workshop is located in the south coast town of Gerringong, where the ocean sprays the air and inspires Elise daily.

A lamp designed in 1947 might be an odd must-have for 2018, but what’s that old expression? Everything old is new again. David and I have just acquired an elegant Grashoppa lamp, designed by Swedish Greta Magnusson-Grossman and reissued by Danish brand Gubi. Why was it on our wish-list? Because like most Scandinavian design past and present - it works beautifully with almost any aesthetic. The lamp’s scale and soft, sinuous curves (it seems too harsh to call them angles) blend perfectly with the interior of our Sydney apartment - plus we can put it to work as a task light. To my mind the Grashoppa demonstrates the true timelessness of good design. It will never date.

It has to be VELVET for me this year, the rich lustre and jewel like tones are still demanding our attention and rightly so!! If there is one room in the home that is calling for something a little more; it is the master bedroom! And any master bedroom requires a showstopping Heatherly bedhead. Go all out with a velvet bedhead, or add this glamourous texture with a Euro cushion in a dreamy shade. Gone are the days of Granny velvet look on the Queen Anne chair (LOL), velvets today are nothing short of glamour and chic!

There’s always a bit of pressure to embrace the latest and greatest trend, but my goal this year is to guide our audience to unlocking their own personal style. I find a really easy way to express yourself in the home is through decor and soft furnishings. I tend to be drawn to anything that’s bright, colourful and quirky, and I’ll mix these items with the muted palette I work with in my own home. The piece I have my eye on as my must-have item for 2018 is the Justina Blakeney ‘Ayo’ wall mirror. Justina’s style is bursting with energy and personality and her homewares range reflects this perfectly. The ‘Ayo’ wall mirror is an easy way to incorporate the cane and rattan trend that’s still going strong, and it’s a way to commit to that material without turning your entire home into a plantation-style house. What I love most about the Ayo wall mirror is not only the fun element, but also its homage to line drawing. A lot of designers are bringing this style into homewares, with influences from Picasso to Matisse becoming quite popular. The work of Diego Cabezas is an amazing example of interpreting this influence in a fresh new way. Trends may come and go but finding your own personal style will always stand the test of time. Find those items that really speak to you and you never know, you might be ahead of the trend for the next year!

My must have item for 2018 has to be the Kelly Wearstler Fairfax chair. I love the proportions and organic form of the chair. The swift thunder linen stripe fabric creates a relaxed style while still being formal. It is the perfect chair to have in a bedroom or as a feature chair in a lounge space. Pattern and texture are huge trends at the moment and will continue to dominate style forecasts. I love that this chair combines not only the simple striped pattern of the upholstery but creates shape and form within its structure and design. These simple designs with incredible detail will make a big impact this year.

A recent trend that I’m absolutely loving and I see only getting bigger in 2018 are hand crafted sculptural works and homewares. We are so lucky to have such talents artisans in Australia producing such unique and high quality products. With the likes of Den Holm and their hand carved limestone planters to ACV Studios sculptural brass vases, these objects are not only beautiful and artistic but hold purpose too. I love the interesting shapes of these objects and the tactile nature of the materials used. With their timeless sensibility, there is no doubt these objects would be a beautiful addition to any style home. If there is one piece you invest in for 2018, make it sculptural homewares!

Those who said black tapware was a passing fad were wrong, and now we’re seeing black (usually matte) elsewhere too. Shower screens, door and window frames, door handles are now all increasingly going noir. I love the simple but effective contrast this offers in many schemes. Think about it: white walls, white windows, white doors. Not much contrast going on there, and we all know contrast is an essential element to an interior that works well. A black shower screen frame in an otherwise simple bathroom can pack a real punch. When bi-folds and large windows are black, they really become a feature, or equally, can be made to disappear, showcasing the view beyond them better. I feel like every dreamy insta-inspiration pic I see lately has something black going on! And it’s not just for the industrial look either. Black can work well in much simpler and more modern homes, as well as traditional ones. From a practical perspective, they’re never going to yellow, like white ones eventually do. Because black is more obvious than white, it can also tie in with and pick up some of your favourite features in a room, whether it’s furniture or your feature tiles.

My must have item for the year is a coloured velvet sofa. Not only is it comfortable and incredibly soft but it will add a touch of elegance too your home. I chose this piece because I am noticing quite a bit of a European and Victorian influence coming back into the scene. I have seen some gorgeous modern takes on the classic tufted velvet sofas and some trendy quilted textures too. The last few years it was all about simple living and minimalism but now I can feel it naturally gravitating towards the opposite direction. This year it’s going be about finding that balance between old and new and celebrating little details in craftsmanship. Take a risk by injecting some colour into your grey and muted palettes. Think of incorporating textures like embroidered textiles, cushions with embellished edges or unique pieces that have a bit of rustic charm. You don’t have to live in a period home to be able to pull off a colourful velvet sofa. This piece suites many different styles and would sit well in a mid-century bungalow or a modern city loft. The velvet sofa I have selected has gorgeous clean lines that gives off a contemporary vibe. It would look amazing in a bohemian/eclectic space to balance out those rustic and global elements. This trendy velvet sofa is a classic that has been redefined. It is the perfect statement piece for the design lover who dares to be different.
