It’s official guys, summer is over. Wanna know how I
know? Pumpkin flavored everything, that’s how. The consolation prize for no more pool parties, no more bonfires, no more bbqs, no more fun. Cool shit is replaced by responsibility and layers...personally, I’m not a fan of either. Ok, that was pretty dramatic. In all honesty I love fall! Why? It’s new, it’s different, it’s a hint of the constant change we all encounter, the change we crave. As always, LIKE is right there with ya. We are changing it up right now, transitioning. Our facebook relationship status wouldn’t be “It’s complicated”, but maybe something like, “Dating this new girl and excited to see where it goes”. We’re stoked, and we hope you are too! Bare with us on this journey friends, this girl isn’t the easy type. She’s making us work for it and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Anything worth getting is worth working for, right? “ I had this alter ego, swearing all the time, fuck everything, loud mouth, ya know? ” LIKE: Here with Karen Marie Ørsted of MØ, care to explain the meaning behind name? MØ: Several reasons... first off: started MØ back in 2009, started off as more of an art project - crunk rap, trash rap, electronic - trashy beats. I had this alter ego, swearing all the time, fuck everything, loud mouth, ya know. Back then my songs were heavily influenced of being a young fucked up teenager. It was a youth explosion - fuck everything. Took the name MØ because it means maiden, or virgin... not in a sexual way, but virgin to life, pure. Back then it was very ironic since I was all trashy and bad. Stuck with the name, even when I started putting down the filters and being more myself. More open and honest with the things I was writing... MØ still fit with themes of everything I was writing about: Life, being young, lost, confused, insecure, and all that shit... so the name still fits that. Also, my grandfather was an artist and always signed his paintings MØ. L: Very cool, is he still around/did he ever get to see you perform? M: No, but he knew I was into art, music, and ya know, I’m not spiritual... but I feel that he is still here at some points. I guess anyone that lost someone they love you can still feel their presence with you... makes you happy and pursue shit. L: Totally! You can feel them help you get through the tough parts of the pursuit. L: You have pop-electronic sounds, hip hop/r&b influences, yet you sing like a punk rock star. M: Oh, thank you! That’s a compliment. L: Hah! Yes, it is! When I was first listening to your music I felt the punk rock influence, and after a little more research I saw you use to be in a punk rock band... it all made sense! M: I’m so happy to hear you say that. That’s something I really want to come through... but, I know in general, my music is pop... so, I don’t know how many people realize the punk background. So, it’s great to hear you say that. L: Hell yea. I like it. You have a cool combo blend of genres. Any plans of incorporating even more styles? 14

M: It’s not something you can really plan! When you’re making a song it’s all about what you’re feeling in the moment. My producer has the same kind of background. When we make a track it’s not even like we have a concept of like a, “oh, yea let’s do something like this”. We just want to make songs we feel like making. Of course we want it to fit together, but we have the same kind of aesthetic and direction, so it just works. L: I saw you on Jimmy Kimmel last night... Super fun. You crawled through the crowd and jumped on to a platform opposite side of stage. Was that planned out, or a spontaneous, “Fuck it, I’m going to crawl through the crowd”? M: I knew I was going to do it. For all of this tour I’ve been very active in the crowd: stage diving, jumping up on bars, so I was like... if I’m not doing it now, it would be stupid. I asked when I got there and they were like, “Yea, you can do whatever” I was amazed, ‘cause like on danish television shows when I asked to go through the audience they were like, “Oooo, ahhhh, we don’t know... it could be dangerous.” L: Was that your first time performing on television in the states? M: Yea, first time even outside of Denmark. It was crazy, I still don’t believe it! I don’t know what is going on with my mind. But, yea... surreal. L: Seems like things have been moving at a rapid pace with MØ, the past couple years. M: Yea, it’s been great. Like, building up and building up. I want to keep creating music that people can connect with and ya know stay truthful to that. L: How was it working on the track ‘Dear Boy’ with Avicii? M: Cool. I never met him or anything, I got that beat just after my crunk rap stage and didn’t know Avicii at the time but was just like, oh yea, whatever, I could put something to that... it was very different from most of my stuff... still felt inspired to create something, and sent it in. Later was told it was going be put on his album. THEN found out he’s actually famous and shit haha. Crazy. Very different. Issue: 012

L: I really like your “Wasted Time” video... the older version. Do you have a part in directing your videos or allow others to take the reins? M: Me and my friend worked through those videos. She knows how to do editing of video work and she is a genius in helping carry out my vision. So, yes for the older ones my concepts for the most part. L: Rad. I think that helps when the artist is the one with the visual directions for music videos. It’s your shit, and you should make sure the video is conveying what you want. M: Exactly. It’s so important it goes hand in hand. As an artist you should have your hands on everything. You want to say something true to you. So, important that it’s personal. L: Heck yea, it needs to be personal! You deliver really strong emotions both on stage and in your recordings. Do you pull those from past memories, vary from track to track, or...? M: Well, of course all my songs are personal... and they are all written for a reason because I was feeling something in the moment. It’s very important to me that I record all my vocals on my own, by myself... so I can glide into the atmosphere... and so, yea every word is felt. Ya know, for a song I’d rather hear the human in the voice vs. a perfect pitch. That’s not what makes singing beautiful. It’s to feel the realness. L: Do you have a day job back home? M: No, I don’t. L: When was the last time you had a day job? M: Well, this is kind of embarrassing. I’ve never really had one. Before this all started to slowly take off I was studying, and in Denmark you are given money when you are going to school. I was a bartender at a theatre, but very temporary and short term with my studies and music.

L: How supportive is your family of your musical career? M: They have been very supportive. There are no other musicians in my family, so it’s kind of new to them. Because they are like, “What the fuck?” I have been doing music my whole life, and they have always been supportive... but, I’m not sure if they thought all this would happen. Not that they weren’t believing in me, but they’re humble people and know it’s a hard industry... so they weren’t going to be like, “yea, of course you are going to make it”. L: Which is motivational for you to keep pushing it! If in contrary you were told, “don’t worry honey, of course you’re going to make it... you’re going to be a superstar...” M: That’d be fucked up! You can’t tell your kids that haha. Of course motivate them, you know... “If you work hard, you’ll get what you want... probably”. L: Do you always perform with same musicians? M: Yea! I mean, we have had 2 different drummers... but, the one we have now has been for 1 year, he’s so good. The dj and guitarist (who is my producer) have been since the beginning. We’re all like family. L: You don’t have a choice. M: No! haha, that’s one thing. But, we’ve been touring for so long. Even the guy opening for us has been with us throughout tour. He’s actually the older brother of one of the girls I use to be in a punk band with. Issue: 012

L: Oh! Crazy. Do you still hang out with old friends you grew up with? M: I do! I love them very much... when I see them I get so happy. I don’t get to see them as much as I use to. We had this gang of girls which were like, my crew. It’s sadly very rare seeing them now because of travel. But, we’re so close that they understand and every time I see them, it’s just like old times you know? Like, we didn’t skip a beat. It’s still hard some times not seeing everyone as much as I wish, but that’s life. I’ve dreamed of doing this since I was 7 years old and I can’t abandon that dream. Again, not to sound spiritual... but, they’re in my heart. They’re like family too. L: Makes the time you do get to spend with them, that much more special! M: Definitely! When I see them I’m all like, touchy and “I want to be close to you” and I’m not like that normally! But, when you see someone you love so much you feel like you need to be close to them. L: Awh, cute. So, this is your first time touring through the states. How different is it compared to other places you have toured? M: Not to be a kiss ass or anything. But, I really like America. There is something about this country that makes you dream high *takes a deep breath in - exhale*. You have all this culture and exciting things. You have big cities then this fucking amazing - beautiful nature. You’re allowed to dream here. It’s so hard to explain. Like, people over here aren’t arrogant but they do dare to say what they dream about. Ya know, cause there are people that say all these great things they are going to do in such a shitty way of like...cue snotty voice: “Yeaaaa I’m going to make it, I’m going to be a super star, I’m so cool. I’m saying it out loud because I have that much confidence, and I’m arrogant...” and I hate that kind of vibe! But, yea... over here it’s just like: cue hyped voice: “Yea! I want to do all this cool shit. We’ll see if i make it !“ And yea, the audiences have all been great. By the end of every performance if I stage dive, they always carry me through out. Where in Europe... L: They let you drop? M: No! Hah, but like... checking out the audience and thinking like, ooo they might not be down to catch me if I jump...

L: Ah, so reading their emotions and what not. M: Yea, exactly. Like, they are into the music... but, jumping on them may be too much. Where, here everybody is just like *single-clap* yea, fuck it, yea *raises hands*. L: Sweet. I’ll be waiting for a stage dive tonight. M: Hopefully it continues and they catch me tonight! L: Wrapping up... Your album, ‘No Mythologies to Follow’ was released this year. Anything you’d like to share about that ride? M: It was so good! We had been working on it since 2012-ish. The album symbolizes this amazing period of time. It’s been the most crazy and best years of my life so far. Plus I feel like I’m being true with it... these are my emotions and about things I really care about and political opinions, opinions in general! It’s very personal. I know that it is not perfect, I don’t want it to be perfect. But, I mean... it’s my debut, and... I feel that it is a good debut for me. It’s not trying to be something that I am not. L: Yea, don’t do that! Good. Are you going to take a breather or dive right into the next? M: I’m not going to take a breather. I can’t tell you when it will be released... we have only just started. But, it is in the works! I want to be making music for the rest of my life.
