Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the July edition of your Abbey-Link. The schools break up for the Summer later this month, so lets hope the weather starts to improve and that we can all enjoy a Summer of fun and be able to spend it enjoying the outdoors. There are many local events taking place over the Summer. The Gloucester Quays are holding their annual Food Festival, a weekend of top chefs and family fun, read more on page 36; also in July there is a flower festival taking place at St Lawrence Church and a Summer fete at Kites Corner for James Hopkins Trust, a great local charity, and the Churchdown Male Choir are performing a variety of events, see more details about these events on page 37. With Summer holidays around the corner, a little fitness may be on the agenda, if so, and you enjoy walking, why not get involved with the local Walking for Health group who meet weekly for organised walks around your local area, more details about this are on page 30. We have included an editorial this month from Swift Removals, their company has grown considerably over the last 20 months, with some help from advertising in The Link Directories, of course! Read more about them and their successes on page 25. If you would like to see if we can help grow your business, we have a birthday offer to celebrate our sister directory, the Tuffley Link, in its 4th year of publication, that you may be interested in on the opposite page. Just pick up the phone and give us a call. Now is a great time to get on top of those gardening jobs in preparation of the BBQ season, so if your garden needs a bit of a spruce up or your patio a bit of a clean, we have some great local customers who can help you out, all our customers are listed in our index on page 38. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 33. This months winner is C Millington, congratulations tickets will be on their way to you. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish to: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips
Leaking gutters A common problem people are faced with after a heavy downpour of rain is that they find that their guttering starts to leak. This can simply just be a case of the gutter overflowing due to a build up of debris such as moss getting trapped, usually in the downpipe or on a bend. Of course an easy fix is just to get it cleaned out. Another cause can be where the seals on a union (joint) have perished over the years and this is usually indicated by a constant dripping from the joint long after the rain has stopped. Many people may be tempted to try and seal the joint with a silicone sealant but this is rarely a long term fix. Also this makes a replacement at a later date more difficult as the old cured sealant must be removed from the guttering. The only real answer is to replace the offending union along with new seals that come with them. Many brands of guttering joints etc are of a fairly standard size but not all, so you may be lucky with just unclipping the joint and unscrewing the unit from the fascia. Replacement is the reverse procedure, you will however need a head for heights and good sturdy ladders, if you have neither then it may be best to leave it to a tradesman to give you a proper repair. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The climbing centre activity went well with a session on the high wall then climbing along another wall with hand and foot holds. The water activities at Croft Farm also kept everyone occupied with Kayaking in the morning and wind surfing in the afternoon. With an evening on Painswick Beacon and our Midsummer Madness evening (when all the games revolve around water ending with a water fight.) Cubs due up in September are being invited to come along and see what Scouts are like. Then we have our summer camp near Newquay in the first week of the school holidays. Details of the Fathers/Mums camp at Cranham are now out when Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers all camp at Cranham with their mums or dads. This is the 36th camp we have held and with over 80 on it is still very popular. Please send forms back on time if you want a place. All units start back the week the schools start in September, with older Beavers going into Cubs, older Cubs to Scouts and older Scouts to Explorers. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you would like more information about our group. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by refreshments, and most importantly, the chance to chat and socialise. Our most recent speaker was Irene Tyack, from the Yellow Hat Tribe Gallery at Chipping Norton. Irene's life story, which included leaving home at 15 and living independently, working in Herefordshire and the Cotswolds as a fruit picker, cleaner, barmaid, waitress and nanny, whilst single-handedly raising a family of six, made for an amusing and absorbing tale. When Irene met Vince Tyack, an entrepreneur who farms ostriches, their conversations led to the inspiration for The Yellow Hat Tribe, the brightly-coloured folk who are the subject of Irene's paintings, and at 50, she finally realised her life-long ambition to become a painter. Irene's work has been featured on ITV, and is exhibited world-wide. Forthcoming Guild events include a coach trip in July; our Guild's 50th anniversary lunch in August, and the annual Quiz and skittles matches. Our next speakers include Rosemary Morgan on "Memories and Monologues", and a demonstration by Neil Alcock of the Vineyard Pottery. Guests and Visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along! Please mention

Top chefs and a feast of family fun at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, July 22-24, 2016
Three of our most famous TV chefs will be helping to cook up a fabulous feast of fun, food and drink and live entertainment at Gloucester Quays Food Festival from July 22-24. TV’s popular chef Tom Kerridge, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and Reggae Reggae Sauce creator Levi Roots will all be demonstrating their fantastic skills at what promises to be the biggest and most successful food festival yet. On Friday, July 22, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain will be demonstrating some of the delicious recipes from her book as well as the enthusiasm, wit and warmth that won the hearts of TV viewers as she meets her many fans. Nadiya, who has since appeared on numerous TV shows, will soon be publishing her first cookbook, Nadiya’s Kitchen. On Saturday, July 23, TV chef Tom Kerridge will return to his home city of Gloucester to share the skills that have made him a household name and wow the crowds at Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Tom said: “Having grown up in Gloucester and with strong family ties in the area, I can’t wait to return to the city. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, it should be a fantastic weekend.” With his warmth and keen sense of humour, Tom who is the chef patron of the twoMichelin starred Hand and Flowers pub plus another restaurant, The Coach, both in Marlow, has had a hugely successful TV career. With shows such as BBC 2’s Proper Pub Food and his latest TV programme, Bake Off Crème De La Crème, it seems that Tom and his culinary genius and words of wisdom are never far from our screens. On Sunday, July 24 it will be the turn of Levi Roots to entertain the visitors to Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Levi soared to fame when he appeared on TV’s Dragon’s Den with his now famous Reggae Reggae Sauce. He went on to open his own Caribbean restaurant, launch a successful musical career, become a motivational speaker and even publish a business book. Nadiya Hussain, Tom Kerridge and Levi Roots will all be signing their books and meeting and greeting fans at 2.45pm inside Gloucester Quays Outlet on the day that they each appear at the Food Festival. Gloucester Quays Centre Manager Matt Bird said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming TV chefs Tom Kerridge, Nadiya Hussain and Levi Roots to the Food Festival this year and I’m sure their live cooking demonstrations and the passion they have for creating the finest food are going to thrill our visitors. “Tickets for the cookery demonstrations are limited so we always encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment. Entry to the rest of the Food Festival is free and it really will be a fantastic event for all the family to enjoy with a host of attractions, some of the finest foods, drink and gifts plus special event offers from many of our retailers.” Now in its sixth year, Gloucester Quays Food Festival, which attracted a record 148,000 visitors in 2015, is now established as the biggest event of its type in the South West. More than 120 stalls will offer everything from mouth-watering artisan pies, succulent farm sausages and lovingly brewed real ales to crafts and jewellery. All the celebrity chef demos and shows will take place in the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Theatre at the heart of Gloucester Quays Food Festival in Mariner’s Square.
