Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Abbey-Link. Boris has made his announcement and it looks like there is light at the end of this very long tunnel! With the children going back to school this month, and then non essential retail and outdoor hospitality hopefully being able to open next month, slowly life may be returning to normal. We are also doing really well as a county in delivering the vaccine, and as that is our way out of this, then that is also news to be celebrated. It is tough for so many at the moment - both personally and professionally and it is really important to try to support each other and our local businesses where we can. With it being Mothers Day later this month, some ways we can support our local businesses are; Buy a takeaway from one of our local restaurants that are now providing a takeaway service, how about purchasing gift vouchers from local businesses - there are many local beauticians that are offering this as well as local small independent shops. Another great way to support local businesses currently, which is Free, is to ‘follow, like and share’ any of their social media posts on Facebook or Instagram - you can find many of the local businesses that we support on our social media sites please go and take a look. If you are looking to get your business in front of more customers this year, then you might be interested in our ‘Spring into Action’ advertising offer this month. Dave’s top tips Changing a lock There are a number of reasons why you may need to change the locks at home. Maybe you have lost your keys. The easiest lock to change is what is commonly called the Yale lock. This lock is actually called a night latch and the whole assembly does not need to be changed as the internal working latch, barrel or cylinder, can be changed independently of the rest of the mechanism. This allows you to use a new key that after all is the usual purpose of changing locks At the back of the door you will see the lock box. This is held on by two screws, which are located above and below the actual door latch. Release these screws completely and put them somewhere safe. You will then be able to wiggle off the lock box. When the lock box is removed you will see the locks back plate. This is the plate that holds the whole lot to the door. Sticking out of the back plate you will see a thin bar with grooves across its width. This is called the shank. Above the shank and to either side of it are two screw heads, which hold the barrel or cylinder to the back plate. Unscrew these and put them with the lock box screws. You should then be able to pull the barrel or cylinder out of the door. Take a new barrel or cylinder and lay it alongside the one you have just taken out. Measure the length of the shank and using a strong pair of pliers and a hacksaw, cut the new shank to the same length as the old. The grooves that are already partially cut in the shank are there to help you. When you have sawn a little way through the shank you should be able to bend it downwards to allow the shank to split in the correct place. Re assembling the lock is now a direct reversal of the procedure you used to dismantle it. Regards Dave Stevens.
