Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. This month we are celebrating! We have been publishing the Hucclecote Link for 11 years this month and so as always this is a time for me to say ‘Thank You’ to all of you who have helped to make this possible. To the business owners for putting your trust into the Link Directories, to my great team of distributors who ensure that you receive your copies regularly and to YOU the reader, for picking up the phone and using the fantastic local businesses that we have in the directories. Without your support all of our businesses would struggle, so Thank You. This month sees us celebrate 2 bank holidays, which is always a good excuse to catch up with friends and families, but also an English tradition for us to use the time to try our hand at DIY! So if you are looking to get some work done in your home and garden during May, why not give one of our businesses a ring, find them all on our index on page 30, and then keep those bank holidays free for some well deserved you time! If you are looking to get out and about, Highnam Court are holding an Open Day in their Gardens to help raise money for the NSPCC on 13th May - more details are on page 18. Hucclecote Community Association also have a variety of events taking place over the next couple of months see opposite. Congratulations to Mrs Prewer , for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month & enjoy those bank holidays…. Sarah.

Dave’s Top Tips PVA adhesive PVA or Polyvinyl Acetate is, in its simplest form, glue for sticking pieces of paper together. One step up the ladder, and a little stronger, it becomes an excellent wood glue for Diy enthusiasts and joiners alike. In its extreme form it becomes an extremely versatile, waterproof adhesive and sealer, which has an extraordinary number of uses in the building trade. PVA can be added to a cement mortar mix to give the mix slightly better waterproofing qualities and advanced adhesion to the surface it is applied to. Painting a coat of PVA on the surface before the cement mortar is applied can even further increase this adhesion. Timber can be sealed with PVA to give it a waterproof quality, although if the surface of the timber is to be subject to any wear or traffic, then PVA, as it is an emulsion, will eventually fail. PVA can also be used to allow ceramic tiles to stick to timber (bath panels etc). At least 3 coats of undiluted PVA are required and each coat must dry thoroughly before the next is applied. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Hucclecote Larkhay WI We had a coffee morning this month in aid of ‘Maggie’s Centre’ in Cheltenham. This is our charity for the year and it went very well. Sarah who hosted the coffee morning made such delicious cakes (and it was difficult to choose) so most of us had to try at least two…… It went very well and we raised a lot of money, which has already gone to ‘Maggie’s’, so thank you Sarah. We went to the Everyman theatre to see ‘Grumpy Old Women’ which was fantastic and very funny. A fun game of skittles went very well and this was a warm up for the season against other WI’s, which is planned through the next few months. We have lots of different speakers on many varied subjects. There will also be meals out, skittles, croquet, outings and cream teas for the warmer weather, so lots to look forward to. After all of our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

Hucclecote Garden Club At last there is a feel of Spring in the air, the daffodils, crocus and primroses have finally braved the elements and given us that optimistic feeling that, at last, we can get out in the garden and get underway with our horticultural ideas for the year. We recently had our Annual General Meeting of the Society, and as well as the usual business of the evening, we were given an insight into the work of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust in Gloucester and the surrounding area, by Vandana Lake. The work of the Trust could not continue without the assistance of the many Volunteers who help with ongoing and new Projects commissioned by the Trust. The Trust have their Conservation Centre at Robinswood Hill Country Park and hold many taster sessions for children, if you would like to explore a nature reserve with a GWT specialist or bring the family to an outdoor activity, there is something for everyone. We look forward to welcoming Roger Umpelby to the Club talking on Fruit & Veg Buying convenience of Growing Satisfaction. Roger comes from Ashton under Hill near Evesham and is a professional entomologist and horticulturalist of many years experience, is a part-time advisor for RHS and occasional lecturer at Pershore College. Do come along to one of our talks, we meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. Further information from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573.

Hucclecote Scout News

With over 20 on the May Day Camp patrols, we have been putting up tents and learning how to make camp gadgets as with new Patrol Leaders and new Scouts, some training is needed. The St Georges Day Parade went well, with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts marching through the city to the Cathedral for a short service. The weather has not been very good for outside activities on a Scout evening, but we hope to start lighting fires and doing pioneer projects very soon. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have children between 10 and 13 who are interested in joining the Scouts (Beavers and Cubs are currently fully up)

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday every month, at 7.30pm. Meetings include a speaker or demonstration, which cover a wide range of topics and interests; a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Forthcoming speakers include Jon Mason from Highfield on "Hanging Baskets", and "A Passion for Pearls" by Frances Benton. The last meeting included the AGM, when the new Committee was announced, along with the full programme of speakers and events for the forthcoming year. Our speaker was Stefan Urbanowski from Chedworth Roman Villa who gave an illustrated talk on "Roman Medicine". In Roman times, only the military had access to hospitals, where Doctors usually Greek slaves - practised their skills on battlefield wounds and injuries sustained in the gladiator arena. As all treatment was done without the aid of X rays or any form of painkillers, it was not for the faint-hearted! Guests and visitors are always welcome to attend Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
