A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. As I’m writing this today, it’s the first day of Spring - apparently! Just as it looked as though the weather was taking a turn for the better, as I look outside now it’s fairly dark and raining….again!! Lets hope that the weather starts to take a turn for the better soon, as with the Easter bank holiday later this month, April is always a time when we like to start to venture back outside again. If your garden / outside area is looking as though it could do with some TLC after the winter months, we have some great gardeners and landscapers who can help bring your garden back to life. Whether it’s a one off job, or ongoing weekly / monthly maintenance, take a look in our index...we will have someone for everyone. As we start to think of the warmer months ahead and spending more time outdoors, perhaps now is time to think about improving your tennis skills. Tennis Plus Academy offer a range of junior and adult courses at various venues around Gloucester, for further details see their advert on page 19. If you are yet to book your holiday this Summer, why not take a look at the Portugal Villa on the opposite page, their rates are really reasonable. Remember our Sudoku competition on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the new Cineworld at the Quays. Congratulations to Mrs K Ostle, the winner of this months Cineworld tickets. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month and a happy Easter Sarah. Dave’s top tips Water hammer , the cause! A frequent questions is how to stop "water-hammer" when water has been drawn from a system. First it is important to know how it occurs. The entry of cold water into your tank is controlled by a "ball valve". As hot water is drawn off, cold water rushes in from the cold tank to replace it. When you flush the loo, the same thing happens in your cistern. The incoming flow is regulated by a float, which rises with the water to shut off the valve when the tank is full. When the mains cold rushes into the tank/cistern it causes ripples on the waters surface and the float bobs about, opening and closing the valve. It is this vibration within the valve and on the float arm which, when reverberating along the pipe, initiates the cause of water hammer. The velocity of the water flowing through the valve means that when it is shut there is a build up of pressure behind the valve, as more water tries to push on through the pipe. This increase in pressure causes a pressure wave to form which travels back down the pipe. The wave then travels up and down the pipe until the energy is dissipated through friction, this is why there is a ‘hammering’ effect. We will cover how to prevent wayter hammer in another top tip. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.

******************************************************* This month I had an email from John of Hucclecote:"Hi Rachael, having seen your articles I was wondering what advice you can give me. After 2 years of depression and trying to cope by myself, I keep being told to do something about it by my family. I don't want to go on anti-depressants but I am feeling so awful. What do you think? And what would you advise if I came to see you? Would Hypnotherapy help?" Thank you, John, for emailing me regarding such a horrible thing for you to be suffering with. Depression can take many forms, but without doubt, it is one of the most debilitating things to have. As we all know, many famous people suffer, or have suffered, with depression. Winston Churchill of course, called his, the Black Dog. It is no respecter of class or creed, and is a very common illness which actually does need treatment if it is severe. Your family are right in pushing you to get help. If you are advised to go on medication, please don't turn it down. Many people actually have a lack of a certain hormone or chemical in the brain that can cause depression, and will need that extra amount from antidepressants to replace it. There really is no point in denying yourself that type of help if your GP advises it. People are often reticent to go on tablets but if you look at it in a different way, you will realise that it is so sensible to take the medication. If you had diabetes would you really not take your insulin? If you had dangerously high blood pressure would you refuse to take medication? Of course not! Combining medication with coming to see me for Hypnotherapy and Counselling, would certainly help you, and our 2 hours together would cover the whole background of the depression. Between us we would work out a way forward to try and beat your Black Dog. Ongoing support will always be offered, and it is important for you to know that if you wish to have a chat about your treatment between sessions, then I am available by phone. A CD can be recorded for you by me as well. So John, don't waste any more time, get help soon. As they say on the adverts....because you're worth it! ****************************************************************

April 2014 Film Releases FRIDAY 4TH APRIL RIO 2 Blu (voice of Jesse Eisenberg) and his family take flight for the Amazon after Jewel (voice of Anne Hathaway) decides their children should explore the world. Meanwhile, the overprotective father grows concerned that his family will leave him once they've experienced life in the wild. Tracy Morgan, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, George Lopez, and Leslie Mann reprise their roles in this sequel

DIVERGENT In a future where the population is divided by personality types, one young woman classified as "divergent" uncovers a conspiracy to eliminate all who bear her misfit label, and attempts to find out what makes the powers-that-be so frightened of them before time runs out. Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Theo James (Underworld: Awakening) star in this action thriller adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth

NOAH Darren Aronofsky brings the story of Noah's Ark to the big screen with this Paramount/New Regency religious drama. Aronofsky directs from his own script co-written by Ari Handel and John Logan. Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, and Emma Watson head up the starring cast.

FRIDAY 18TH APRIL THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 The web-slingin' wall-crawler hits the screens once again in this follow-up to Marc Webb's 2012 reboot of the series. Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker, who squares off against the villainous Electro, played by Jamie Foxx. Emma Stone heads up the rest of the starring cast, which includes Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, and Chris Cooper

FRIDAY 25TH APRIL TRANSCENDENCE Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can, but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Wills thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News

The Scouts have started their ski sessions and are already skiing from half way up the slope. With 12 Scouts doing the artist and pioneer badge, fire safety and DIY starting this week we will have completed quite a few extra badges this winter. When the lighter evenings come we are doing activities outside every week from the fire lighting and cooking to building pioneer bridges. The Founders Day Celebrations went well with a good turn out and all the units doing a sketch and everyone renewing their Scout promise. All the cubs who have come to Scouts have now been invested and most of them are coming on May Day camp some to summer camp in Yorkshire. New Beavers (6 to 8) and Scouts (10 to 14) are always welcome to come along for an evening to see what we are like. The Scout section is very active with games and activities all evening plus camps and extra activities on other nights. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society The AGM has now been and gone. Sorry that we went to press before the results were out, but I will try to provide an update later. As I write we are hoping to have an additional speaker on the evening, showing us how to make a container for an alpine plant garden – the photographs look most impressive – let’s hope I can grow some plants to match. On April 24th we will be hosting Peter Ralph, who will be entertaining us with a talk on the wildlife [updated to include wild boar I hope] and the plants of the Forest of Dean. While walking there I have often wondered ‘what is that plant?’ – in future I will expect to know. Thursday 22nd May will be a totally different meeting. Our normal venue will be given over to the elections so that we cannot use it. So instead we are taking a trip to the gardens at Highnam Court, where we will be enjoying a guided tour – all being well to include ‘some of the parts that the other visitors cannot reach’. This will be followed by what I am assured are some of the best home-made cakes on offer in the county. My seed potatoes are chitting nicely thank you, and I have dug in my green manure in readiness for planting them when the ground is a little drier. This year I have again gone for Sarpo – a good blight resistant variety that also gives a good crop. I will report on progress. Why not join us one evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge and find out a bit more about many different aspects of gardening. Garden, allotment, patio pots, indoor plants and the plants other people grow – we cover them all. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. ‘Do you have a bucket list? Last year I kept hearing the term ‘bucket list’ and at first, I was slightly puzzled, why would you create an inventory of your buckets and who owns more than one or two buckets anyway? A bucket list is a chosen list of things to do or places to visit during your lifetime or during a specific time or big birthday year. My own bucket list has been short and the same for the last few years: visit Canada, lose weight & perform a stand-up comedy routine. Last year I managed to visit Canada for the first time and I did lose a bit of weight (work in progress!) so my bucket list looks a bit empty. Originally, I set the targets to be achieved by the time I turned 40 and now that is just over two years away. So what about this last piece of the puzzle? Is there something you have always wanted to do or know you must do? What’s stopping you? What holds you back? Fill your bucket, you know you want to! Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road.’

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild At our first meeting of the new financial year, we welcomed three new members, adopted “Maggies Cancer Care” as our Charity for the year, and formed a full Committee! We then went on to listen to our speaker John Heathcott,a Cotswold Warden telling us all about “ The Cotswolds”. He explained that the Cotswolds is one of thirteen National Parks, covering an area of 790 square miles and was first written about in the 1100’s,by the 1300’s it was famous all over Europe for it’s wool.! The Cotwolds comprises eighteen different types of features, Cleeve Hill being the highest point, and valleys, wolds, and manmade landscapes such as parks. The villages were built of grey, brown and honey coloured stone-the stone being Jurassic limestone which was marvellous for buildings. Initially the villages were owned by the Abbeys eg. Gloucester abbey owned Northleach! The talk was very informative and interesting, especially for members not originating from Gloucestershire. We look forward to a year of varied speakers including a “Chocolate Experience” evening, and a Cookery Demonstration given by Sainsburys in August. Do come along and join us on the third Thursday of each month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7-30pm, where a warm welcome is extended to all. Please mention
