A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. With Spring finally here and the Easter Holidays now upon us, it’s a time for the bank holiday season to begin and hopefully time for us to start to spending time outside. It’s also a time of year when we notice all the jobs that need doing outside! Hopefully the Hucclecote Link can help you with that, we have a wide range of companies that can help get your home and garden looking great for the Summer, from Garden maintenance & landscaping to Property maintenance or Double glazing - just have a look on our index page on page 30. As we mentioned it’s also Easter, a time of year when we all tend to over indulge in chocolate - but if you are trying to be good this year, why not take advantage of Body Flairs Chocolate but Calorie Free Easter Treats - more details are on page 18. With the nights now pulling out, you may be looking to venture out in the evenings, well there are a variety of local clubs around the area to suit a variety of interests - read more on pages 27, 28 &29. The winner of this month Sudoku competition is Mrs H Weaver, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 25. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top tips Low level to close coupled cisterns

How can I change my old low-level toilet to a new close-coupled toilet without having a gap behind the cistern? Well there are two possible answers. You either move all of the outgoing pipework in your bathroom wall or floor, or you make a simple box that goes on the wall behind the new close-coupled cistern. The new cistern is then fixed to this box, which can then be tiled or painted depending on what you like. Even if the bathroom walls are tiled already, using strong construction adhesive you can stick the required timbers on the wall and then tack some plasterboard to them when the adhesive is dry. Make sure that you insert a timber cross member at the height of the screw holes which secure the cistern to the wall. The reason a low level toilet does not often exchange easily for a close coupled unit is because 99% of the time a low level unit has a waste outlet which goes down into the floor. If the low level unit you have has a waste outlet which goes directly through the wall or turns at a right angle out of the back of the toilet to go right or left away from the toilet, then you should have no problem replacing it with a close coupled toilet. If your low level unit goes into the floor, the floor outlet is too far away from the wall to allow an easy exchange with a closecoupled unit. You can either dig up the floor and install another pipe, or continue with the box method described above. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hearts and Hurricanes WI We are a young WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. It's a great way of making new friends, and we promise a friendly and warm welcome. We're expanding our membership at the moment, so if you come along to one of our meetings you're unlikely to be the only newbie! For our April meeting (Weds 8 April) we've got chocolate tasting (how could you resist?!) and in May (Weds 13 May) we'll be trying dancing. For future meetings we've got things such as researching family history, flower arranging and car maintenance planned. In between the monthly meetings we also hold other clubs for WI members: book club, craft club, a dining club, and we organise regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips. We always include time during our meetings for tea (or wine!) and cake and a chance to chat with other members. For more information, please see www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. Why not give it a go - we'd love to see you there! HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD 43 members attended the February TWG meeting, when the speaker was Peter Badham of Badham's Pharmacy. As well as the history of this family run firm, established in 1940, Peter outlined the wide range of services provided by a modern-day pharmacy, in a talk that was both amusing and very informative. The programme of events for 2015 was outlined - a Fashion Show in August, theatre trips, and the annual Inter-Guild Quiz. Forthcoming speakers at the regular monthly meetings include local company Celia's Pantry Preserves, Wainwright Coast-to-Coast, and the Ifakara Bakery Project in Tanzania. Visitors and new members are always welcome. The Guild meets on the third Thursday each month at 7.30pm at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and at each meeting there is a speaker, tea & coffee, and an opportunity to chat and socialise. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Have you finished chitting your potatoes yet? If you didn’t have them in by Good Friday, no matter, your potatoes may just be a little later this year. I actually put all my own in very early in March this year, as I could see problems with finding the time on and around Good Friday to do that job. We’ll have to see whether the early sowing has any impact, or whether I have to panic- buy some more later and get them in as a matter of urgency. On April 23rd we will be hosting a very welcome return visit by Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries, who will be showing us how to get the best results from our hanging baskets. Last time he spoke to us it was about pruning, and we all went away far more knowledgeable than we were before – we are fully anticipating the same will happen this time. Then on 28th of May we will be joined by Alan Wells, a Gloucestershire bee-keeper, whose topic is ‘You don’t have to be a bee-keeper to keep bees.’ We will be finding out what we can do to help encourage the bee populations in our own gardens. I do have a number of ‘bee hotels’ at my allotment, and I can confirm that they work – I’ve seen bees going in and out. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, or to be an expert gardener – I’m definitely not! More information from Chris on 610694.

Hucclecote Scout News The Group Founders Day Celebrations went well with a good turn out of boys, girls and parents. The items by each unit went well and the food at the end soon vanished. We hope to have our first short outdoor activity weather permitting this Friday (13th), we have started the ski instruction on the ski slope and already Scouts are coming down from half way up the slope. With 8 Scouts going into Explorers in September they are finishing off their Chief Scout Award ( the highest badge in the Scout section) then they will start on Queen Scout Award. With details of the May day camp out most of the Scouts are coming so we will have at least four patrols in camp at a local site. The Scouts will be building their pioneer bridge at the Brownie and Guide Show at Dinglewell school on Saturday 9th May. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have any children between 6 and 14 for more information if they would like to join the group.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our February speaker Peter Berry who showed us ‘Around the World in 80 images’ was very entertaining, his ongoing commentary really bought the slides to life, we went from East to West and North to South without even leaving our seats. Many of his photos were taken from different angles capturing scenes not normally seen by the average tourist, for example his shot of the Taj Mahal was not taken from the front but from the back with views over the river and it gave a very different aspect. We had a very good evening and we thank him very much. We have many speakers covering a range of different topics, eg: A World of lingerie, Tai-Chi, Gardening for Bees and a variety of outings and events. It is not all jam and Jerusalem! We are a very varied and happy bunch and some of us make very, very nice cakes. We have lots of things happening throughout the year so why not come and see for yourselves, there is definitely something for everyone, and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except for August). Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. Please mention
