A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. I’m hoping that as you receive this months directory it will be safe to say that it looks like Spring is on it’s way. The clocks go forward this weekend, and so although we loose an hour, it will mean the start to those evenings getting lighter and with that hopefully the weather starting to get a little warmer. Hopefully the weather will be kind with the Easter school holidays falling at the beginning of this month, and we can use the bank holidays to start to get outside a little more and get on with that Spring Cleaning around the house. The Hucclecote Link has some great local business’s that can help with your Spring Cleaning, whether its inside or outside your home. Check out our index page on page 30 for a list of property maintenance and handymen that can help around your home, or gardeners and landscapers if you are looking to work on your garden, ready for the Summer months. Al’s Windows on page 17 can not only help clean your windows but also your gutters and conservatories too, getting the exterior of you home ready for Spring. Perhaps you are looking for events to fill your diary, keep an eye out on the opposite page, the Hucclecote Community Centre have a variety of events coming up over the coming months. Dave’s top tips Changing a lock
There are a number of reasons why you may need to change the locks at home. Maybe you have lost your keys. The easiest lock to change is what is commonly called the Yale lock. This lock is actually called a night latch and the whole assembly does not need to be changed as the internal working latch, barrel or cylinder, can be changed independently of the rest of the mechanism. This allows you to use a new key that after all is the usual purpose of changing locks At the back of the door you will see the lock box. This is held on by two screws, which are located above and below the actual door latch. Release these screws completely and put them somewhere safe. You will then be able to wiggle off the lock box. When the lock box is removed you will see the locks back plate. This is the plate that holds the whole lot to the door. Sticking out of the back plate you will see a thin bar with grooves across its width. This is called the shank. Above the shank and to either side of it are two screw heads, which hold the barrel or cylinder to the back plate. Unscrew these and put them with the lock box screws. You should then be able to pull the barrel or cylinder out of the door. Take a new barrel or cylinder and lay it alongside the one you have just taken out. Measure the length of the shank and using a strong pair of pliers and a hacksaw, cut the new shank to the same length as the old. The grooves that are already partially cut in the shank are there to help you. When you have sawn a little way through the shank you should be able to bend it downwards to allow the shank to split in the correct place. Re assembling the lock is now a direct reversal of the procedure you used to
dismantle it. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The Scouts who went for ski lessons did well and all ended up skiing from the top and also gaining the winter sports badge. The group Founders Day went well with a good turn out of Beavers Cubs and Scouts and supported by parents. All the items the units put on went well and a general get together afterwards with a cup of tea and refreshments. The Scouts had an evening with four activities, with Annie (the respiration dummy) a mapping and co This year is a 100 years since Cubs were started and the District they are holding a camp at Woodhouse Scout camp near Bristol over the May Day weekend. All boys and girls from 6 to 14 are welcome to come along to see the activities and games the three age range units do. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information. mpass session, a memory item of a boy having a meal but unconscious then Scouts had to answer question about the item and lastly a few knots ending with having to tie a bowline (a non slip loop) at the end of a rope from the beams, if they had tied it properly around their waist they could swing from the beam otherwise? The Scouts are having a go at many of the special badges they can gain before we start out summer activities.
Hucclecote Garden Club Judging from the weather this weekend, I think we have finally made Spring!! Mark Moir from Newent Plant Centre came to talk to our Members in February, with an emphasis on 'Spring Inspiration' - he brought along a wonderful array of Spring flowers and bulbs for sale, and was more than happy to give us some inside tips on cultivation, plant positioning and container ideas. Mark's Plant Centre is well worth a visit and can be found at Little Verzons, Hereford Road, Ledbury. On the theme of Spring flowers some of our Members will be joining with others on the annual May Hill Bluebell Walk, which this year takes place on Saturday 14th May, 2.30pm from the village of May Hill. The fields and woods en route to the top of May Hill are carpeted with bluebells, it is really difficult not to step on them. Home-made teas are provided by the local May Hill ladies, at a very reasonable price and are available after the Walk. The walk is led by Roger Cox, who has lived all his life in the village and has a wonderful knowledge of the history of May Hill and its surrounding area. In July we have Mrs. Ching, who lectures at Hartpury College, talking on Capability Brown, or to give him his full title - Lancelot Capability Brown and his Gardens. This year is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Capability Brown in 1716, he was one of the most famous Landscape Architects in this country. His philosophy was quite a new concept at the time in that he incorporated the landscape into his Gardens, and this became known as The Landscape Movement, his most famous Gardens are at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. His first Garden, Croome Court in Worcestershire comprised 17,000 acres of garden, owned by the Earl of Coventry and cost the equivalent of ÂŁ28m to produce. As always we meet on the fourth Thursday each month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. For more information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. Our speaker in March was Anneliese from the Gloucester food bank. It was very interesting as she explained the procedure that people have to go through. It is not a walk in food bank as you need to be referred by one of several different organisations within the Gloucester area. They are issued with a voucher which entitles them to several days of supplies. The food is donated by individuals, churches, large retailers and banks. (They are always looking for volunteers and donations). We have been on several trips during the last month, we managed to see the snow drops at Rococo gardens, the weather was cold but dry and afterwards we had coffee and cake. We had a lovely meal out at The House in the Tree at Staverton, very nice and we intend to go again. We have speakers most months on various topics. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you.
'Happy 90th Birthday Your Majesty! In recent years there seem to have been numerous commemorations and celebrations affecting wars, battles and the sovereign. Perhaps this year, we approach a milestone as HRH Queen Elizabeth II reaches 90 years of age. At St Philip & St James Church, there are some early plans afoot for a street-party style celebration with our friends at Abbeymead Under 5’s Playgroup that meets on the church site. I wonder what else we could do as schools, streets and community groups to celebrate her birthday? What about a barbecue or dinner with friends, neighbours or colleagues in June 2016? As a church minister, I literally thank God for the Queen. Her gentle spirit and Christian faith is a backbone to her role and an inspiration to many. Quite simply – Happy Birthday your majesty. May God bless you! Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road, Hucclecote'
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Our most recent speaker was Nick Humpries, who gave us a "guided tour", using photographs and words, of Chedworth Roman Villa. The Villa was discovered in 1864, and was a 4th century villa, built on a fresh water spring, and with evidence of an earlier iron-age settlement. The National Trust took over the property in the 1920s, and since then, extensive mosaic floors and underfloor heating systems have been uncovered, and made accessible for the general public to view. Some of our forthcoming events were outlined, including the Queen's Birthday Lunch, the annual Quiz and "Needles and Pins" competition, and tickets for the St John's Players' next production are available. The 2016/17 programme of speakers will be announced at the AGM in March, and is bound cover a wide range of interesting topics, with something to appeal to everyone. The Guild meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm at the Hucclecote Community Centre. Visitors and new members are always welcome, please just come along, or ring Linda on 617701 for more information.
