A bit about

The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last the nights are starting to pull out, and with the clocks about to change, let’s hope that there is a feeling of Spring around the corner. It would make a pleasant change to all this rain we have had recently. So with the Easter break almost upon us and a nice long bank holiday weekend to look forward to, it might be a time for you to start venturing into your gardens to start getting them ready for the warmer months. After the bad weather earlier in the year there may be a little more work required than previous years to get your garden back into shape. Remember we have plenty of gardeners, landscape gardeners and property maintenance businesses that can help you with projects big and small and help get your garden back on track - find a list of all our businesses on our index page on page 30. Maybe you will use the bank holiday to do a little DIY - a nice English tradition of ours!! Again we have decorators, see our back page, carpenters and a variety of companies that can help with interior designs whether that’s blinds, curtains, soft furnishes or carpets and other flooring. Find all our businesses on page 30. Remember that if you are looking for a night out, the Hucclecote Community centre always host a variety of entertainment evenings, have a look on their advert opposite to see what is going on over the coming months, Have a great Easter - don’t eat too much chocolate! ... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Loft Flooring.

Flooring in the loft or attic must only be done to store items such as empty suitcases. The loft or attic area is not designed to carry loads heavier than this and the horizontal rafter sections in your loft are there purely to hold up the ceiling below. You will see that in any part of the loft where there is, for example, a water tank, the floor is reinforced and, in a lot of cases, the rafters are given additional support by hanging timbers attached to the pitched section of the trusses To put a floor in your loft is not a difficult job. It is made much easier by the production of special loft panel flooring. These panels are 18mm thick, 1.2m long and only 320mm wide. This means they are easy to get through the loft hatch. They come in packs of 3 or 5 usually and a pack of 3 is enough to cover a little over 1 square metre. You must make sure you do not lay the floor right up to the edge (eaves) of the floor space as air must be allowed to circulate in the loft to avoid condensation. The loft panels have tongue and grooved sides and ends to allow you to slot one into another. This gives them strength. The long sides should be laid at 90 degrees to the joists and the ends should always meet on a joist. Floorboard joints should be staggered for greater strength. It is very rare for the boards to meet naturally on a joist. Normally a board has to be cut so it finishes in the middle of the joist. This means of course that the tongue and groove need to be cut off both boards where they meet. This does not matter, as the joint will be very strong when it sits on the joist. Do not be tempted to join boards between joists as they will soon sag and cause a weak spot in the floor. Each screw should be countersunk and a pilot hole drilled. This makes fixing the boards easier and takes the heads of the screws below the level of the floor so when you slide suitcases along the floor they do not catch and tear on the screws Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Hucclecote Garden Club We had a good turnout for our AGM held last month, and a great talk from David Cramp from the RSPB on Birds of Gloucestershire. Plans are well in hand for our annual trip this year to RHS Wisley in June. This venue is at the heart of the work of the Royal Horticultural Society, who as we know run The Chelsea Flower Show and many more prestigous Shows in the country throughout the year, and carry out vital research into plants, trees and all things horticultural. Last year we had Nick Morgan from Coleford speaking to us on The Great Glasshouse, Wisley. Nick was involved with the upgrade of the Great Glasshouse and recommended we visit as all the new planting, etc. would be completed and in place by 2020. 'Vegetables, Choosing the correct cultivar' is the topic of our next talk from Richard Baldwin, which we hope people, who grow their own, and first time veg growers will find useful. This is to be held on Thursday 23rd April, 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. For more information on the Club please ring Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month - come along and see what we are about HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We are a friendly group of local ladies, and our monthly meetings are open to guests and visitors. Each meeting includes a speaker or demonstration which cover a wide range of topics and interests, a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, and the opportunity to chat over tea and biscuits. We also arrange lunches at local restaurants every other month; the Ramblers Group organise regular walks, and in May we have a City Walking Tour, exploring hidden Gloucester. Our most recent speaker was Jane Dyer, from Gloucestershire Young Carers, an organisation we have supported as our "nominated Charity". Jane introduced Meg, herself a young carer, who give an insight into the pressures faced by a young person who is juggling education, friendships and planning her own future, alongside caring for a family member with a debilitating illness. Our next speaker will be John Butterworth, on "A Hotel with a Famous Guest List". For more information about the Guild, phone Linda on 617701, or if you would like to come to our next meeting, please do you would be made very welcome To advertise call 01452 617040
