Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. By the time you receive this months directory the clocks have gone forward and so we start to have longer days and hopefully there is a feeling of Spring around the corner. With all that’s going on around the world, we could all do with some positivity in our lives at the moment, so this month why not fill it with lots of little treats to yourself, starting with a night out, check out some events that are happening at the Hucclecote Community Centre over the next few months and maybe get some dates in your diary. Why not pop along to The Village Cakery. Based in Churchdown, they offer a variety of fresh cakes, brownies, cup cakes, coffee, milkshake and ice cream - I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, you can find them on page 16. Another treat for you, Kara’s hairdressing are offering a 25% discount during April on hair colouring if you take our advert, which you can find on page 15. With Spring around the corner, this is always a time for starting to look at the jobs that might need doing outside our homes to get our gardens Summer ready. We have a variety of gardeners, landscapers, and property maintenance businesses that can help, you can find them on our index on poge 26. If you run a local business and your customers live in one of our distribution areas, please do get in touch to find out how we can help get you in front of them with our April offer. Have a great month & enjoy your Easter break - Sarah.

Dave’s top tips FLAT ROOF PROBLEMS

Over the last few weeks I have attended several premises with problems with their flat roofs. Some of these problems are purely down to the age of the roof, and others have been found to have large hollow bumps in them caused by moisture penetrating under the felt and expanding and contracting with the differing seasonal temperatures. This can be remedied with a patch once the bump has been flattened out, however a replacement is always the better option. Sometimes upon closer inspection it is found that chip-board has been used as the roofing board, (this was nearly always the case many years ago) and although the boards may seem sound I always advise that when the roof is re-felted that these boards also get replaced with OSB sterling board or marine ply. The reason for this recommendation is that chip board when wet can simply fall apart so it is not only dangerous to walk on but will soon let the water into your home, also with age it tends to become very brittle. Whereas Osb or marine ply makes a much sturdier base for your roof and is far more tolerant of some leakage without disintegrating at the same rate as chip board. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a varied programme of speakers - the Programme for 2022/23 will soon be announced. A recent speaker was Celia Hargrave, of Trench Hill Garden at Sheepscombe, who brightened a cold dark evening with beautiful photographs of her garden, and it's development over the years. The second half the meeting is the chance for a cup of tea or coffee, a chat with friends, the bring-and-buy sales table, and the raffle. We are a friendly group of local ladies, and guests and visitors are always welcome! Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night!

Hucclecote Garden Club A new Speaker to our Garden club, Kevin Alviti, came along to give us a really interesting talk on Unusual Fruit and Veg. Kevin, with his young family live self-sufficiently on a smallholding at the foot of the Malvern Hills. They grow much of their own fruit and veg from the large vegetable plot. Kevin is a carpenter by trade and does take on commissions as well as making many things for the smallholding. We can thoroughly recomend him as a very entertaining and knowledgeable speaker. For those of you lucky enough to have a pond in your garden, now is an excellent time to plant new aquatic plants. If you can plant up waterlilies this month, they should be flowering by the time summer arrives. Adding oxygenating plants is great for your pond when it is turning green with algae. Most algae grow in water that is low in oxygen so adding these plants helps suppress them. We look forward to learning more about The Dean (Forest of Dean) Why is it special? Verderers, Sheep, Badgers, free mines and more. This is the subject of our next Speaker. Please come along and give us a try, we meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. For more details contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI Our speaker this month was from ‘The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity’. The charity gets no money help from either government or the lottery and relies totally on the good will of people who give up their time to help fund raise. The area that they cover is huge, from Gloucester right down to Bristol. Last year alone they have over 500 call outs from Gloucester alone. They have saved many lives and we really do need them This is our charity for the year and we have a coffee morning later this month to support them. Also this month we have skittles lined up, always a fun evening, and a trip to the Sherbourne cinema to see The Duke and then for a meal afterwards Our programme for the year includes lots of different speakers, a strawberry tea and an outing to St Fagans in Wales. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except August). call For01452 more information please call Betty on To advertise 621496 01452 698299 or just pop in and you will be made very welcome.
