A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the August edition of your Hucclecote Link. It’s the school Summer holidays….a time of year that some of us, as parents love, and some of us parents are already counting down the days until the kids go back to school! Personally I love this time of year, despite the juggle it brings of running a business from home and keeping the kids entertained, I count my blessings that I can just about work around them without the worry of too much childcare arrangements (having grandparents close by is always a grateful bonus - a big thankyou to both sets!) August is a time when we can try to take a break from the day to day routines and spend some quality family time together. With my youngest starting her last year in primary school in September, I’m planning on making the most of my 2 whilst they still want to spend time with me during the holidays! We are proud to say that last month saw our sister directory the Tuffley Link celebrate 3 years of publication. Although this is the youngest of our directories, it’s great to see that it’s really starting to grow now and the residents of Tuffley are using the local businesses that are advertising in it regularly. When I spoke to one of our customers this month about seeing if they are happy to continue with their advertising in our directories - their response was…”Thanks for the reminder. We would most definitely like to renew for an other 6 months on all 3 links. We have found a great response from the Tuffley Link and wished we did it sooner!!!!!” With only 4 months from September until the end of the year, yes really, you may be interested in our August offer if you have a business with potential customers in any of our surrounding areas, see more details on page 21. The winner of this months Sudoku competition is Nick Stafford, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month and enjoy your holiday and family time if you are going away this month... Sarah.

Dave’s top ps Why move to ceramic disk taps? Ceramic disk taps are designed to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, in hard water areas they do not and it is as well to know how they operate and how to service them. It is very rare for the ceramic discs to wear out and the need to replace them is even rarer. It is, most often, just a case of dismantling the moving parts and servicing them. Should you be unlucky enough to have a tap wherein the parts do actually "wear out" then it is unlikely you will be able to replace the discs and will probably need to replace the whole cartridge within the unit. The disc tap should be virtually indestructible because a) the ceramics do not wear out, and b) The distance moved by any part of the tap in any one go, is only a quarter of a turn. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

What's it worth?

24

Bags I've always found it strange that there should be shops selling suitcases at airports. Do travelers arrive at the start of their journey with armfuls of clothes and shoes with a nagging feeling at the back of there minds that they may have forgotten something? Passport?.....no. Left the gas on?.....no. Forgot to cancel the newspapers?.....no. Then whilst standing in the line for check in the reality of their situation opens up before them, they have forgotten their suitcase! But just at this moment they spot the shop selling suitcases and the day is saved. Bags are everywhere and it seems the older we get, the more bags we acquire. Our loft is bulging with suitcases, holdalls and rucksacks, and our kitchen has even got a bag to put plastic bags into, just to keep them tidy. And just as we have more bags we seem to need or hang onto more stuff to fit into them, try packing for a family holiday and you soon realize how much stuff we now rely on or think we can't do without which slows down the whole process of getting anywhere. We can do this with our lives as we collect unpleasant experiences, hurtful conversations or mistake we may have made years ago. We seem to carry these things around with us like a huge pile of luggage we are too afraid to put down or leave behind, often just adding to the pile. And these things just seem to slow us down or get in the way of our relationship and our feeling of well being. After a while this baggage just seems to get heavier and more awkward. I don't know what you are carrying around, what past luggage you are trying to lift but what I do know is that God didn't make us to carry these things. So over these summer months I pray that you may discover rest but also what it would look like to loose some of these bags, perhaps it's time to forgive, maybe a time to forget, to leave something behind or just have a conversation someone which you've been meaning to have for sometime. Have a great summer, don't forget your suitcase but remember to pack light. Steve Godsell, St Philip & St James Church,

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD The Guild meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 3rd Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm. There is always a speaker, a raffle, refreshments and the chance to socialise and chat. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Our speaker in June was Ann-May, from Celia's Pantry Preserves, who also brought along a wide selection of produce for us to taste. Celia's Pantry Preserves is a family-owned business based in Hucclecote, who make sweet and savoury jellies, chutneys and other sweet treats, using local, fresh and seasonal produce. Their range spans from their award-winning Mango Chutney, reflecting Caribbean origins, through to traditional English crab apple and quince jellies. Ann-May's talk had all our mouths watering, and the tasting samples were even better than she'd led us to believe! There are a limited number of tickets still available for the Bon Marche Fashion Show on Thursday 20 August, priced at £6.00. This promises to be a fantastic evening, with refreshments and a raffle, as well as the opportunity to buy clothes at a discounted price. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information on the Guild, or for tickets for the Fashion Show.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our June meeting was a real eye-opener – our own member Jan Broadway talked us through the history of Kew Gardens, from its start in the 1700s, at the instigation of the then Princess of Wales, Augusta, to the present time when another Princess of Wales opened up a new glasshouse. Did you know that the mutiny on the Bounty was in large measure brought about as the result of the plant specimens on board getting more water to drink than the crew? 27th August is our annual in-house flower and produce show. [Visitors are welcome to come though not to enter]. This year Reg, one of our members has kindly donated some Russian tomato plants, so we are all now trying to grow the largest tomato in the show. Reg grew one weighing a giant 620 grams last year – it will be interesting to see if anyone can match that. There is a prize on offer for the one which weighs most. I am not counting my chickens...... On September 24th we will be starting to think about winter in the garden, when David Coombs talks about Barks, Stems and Evergreens for Winter. It will be good to learn what we can be doing ahead of winter, rather than just longing for spring to arrive Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on the 4th Thursday of the month, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, or to be an expert gardener – I’m definitely not! More information from Sue on 543573 or Joy on 553185.

Hucclecote Scout News

29

By the time you read this we will be back from our summer camp on the Gower, with 26 Scouts and 5 Leaders we are all looking forward to a dry warm camp. The Midsummer Madness evening went off well with a nice warm evening. From flicking gooey dough to Scout sitting on chairs, race to get cup of water in centre of circle, to putting heads through holes in sacking and getting a sweet or a wet sponge in your face all added up to the fun. The evening ended with all the Scouts having a cup with each patrol having a large bucket of water, only getting water from your own bucket you could throw it over who you liked. Everyone was very wet. Hope Dads brought a towel for Scouts to sit on in their cars. Our last meeting was on the 10th July when we had a Bar B Q and plenty of small games (games of chance throwing rings etc.). The Scouts start back on Friday 4th September when we all make toffee apples. With 70 on the Father/Mothers camp over the weekend of the 18th September should be as good as ever, with Terry handing over the running of it after doing it for 37 Years. As usual any boys or girls between 6 and 14 are welcome to join the Group Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Gardening for Bees was the topic for our meeting in June. We had a very pleasant and interesting evening. We learnt about what type of flowers were better for the honey bees, and our speaker Allan Wells, gave us a list with all the flowers that attract bees. He also gave us the seasonal planting times so that the bees have lots of different flowers throughout the summer. We have lots of things happening throughout the year ie: outings, and speakers on various diverse subjects so why not come and see for yourselves, there is definitely something for everyone, and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except for August). Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. Please mention
