Dave’s top tips Drilling holes in ceramic tiles Ok , so you have just tiled your bathroom and need to fit a few items to the wall such as a towel rail. But those tiles seem so hard and slippery, what is the best way to drill a hole? The first thing you need to do is mark out where the hole needs to be and apply some masking tape to said mark. This will help prevent the drill from slipping around on the tiles surface. Next fit a masonry bit of correct size into your drill and set the hammer action of the drill to OFF. Align the drill with your mark and slowly start to apply pressure with the drill running fairly slowly. This should give you a slight indentation on the tile as the drill cuts in. Gradually increase the speed but being careful not to overheat the drill bit and not applying too much pressure. Gradually the drill will pass through the tile and you can then apply the hammer action to drill through the actual wall. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Have you noticed that there seem to be more PINK cars on the road recently? One of them, a little Nissan Micra C&C Convertible, belongs to Sali Gray, organiser of the Pink Car Rally. I caught up with this local lady, to find out more about the Rally and to ask whether the number of pink cars on the road is, in fact, increasing. Sali – thank you for stopping by. I’m sure our readers would like to know more about the Pink Car Rally. How did it all come about? Hi Sarah – thank you for inviting me. I’m always delighted to tell people about the rally. In 2007, I read a small piece in ‘YOU’ magazine, about the Little Princess Trust charity, which aroused my curiosity. I discovered that the charity was fairly new and its aim was to give ‘real hair’ wigs to children throughout the UK, who had lost their hair primarily through chemotherapy. I decided to find out more, so I attended their AGM in Hereford, where the charity is based. At the end of the AGM, the Trustees were discussing the need to ‘raise awareness’ of the charity and were considering paying a PR company to help. I knew I had the skills to help them, so I volunteered to organise something. They asked what sort of thing it would be…. and, thinking on my feet, I explained that I drive a pink car and people stare at it wherever I go, so perhaps I could organise an annual Pink Car Rally! Is it an off-road rally? Your little pink car doesn’t look as if it was really designed for rallying! No, Sarah, it’s really more of a Pink Procession, than a rally. I encourage as many pink cars as possible to participate and we drive in convoy, between Hereford Hospital and a different children’s hospital each year. We have visited Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford and Cardiff. This year’s rally will be different though. We’re calling it ‘The Big One’ and we will drive from John O’Groats to Land’s End, over 6 days, to raise awareness of the charity throughout the UK. That’s quite a journey… how do you find pink cars? Are there many in the UK? According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) there were 7792 pink cars on the UK roads, at the end of 2011. Finding them is quite a challenge, because we don’t have the ‘hook’ that the national media requires. There is a poem about it on YouTube (Pink Car Rally Poem). So we have to rely on social networking and local radio and newspapers. We have a Facebook page, we tweet and I have recently started a Blog. How many pink cars were in last year’s Rally? There were 39 pink vehicles, including a lorry cab and a pink National Express coach! There are lots of photos on www.pink-car-rally.com It sounds as if it involves a lot of work. Has it taken over your life? It so easily could do! But I work full-time on my own business, so I have to make time for the voluntary work in the evenings and at the weekends. What I really need is a volunteer PA; someone local, who has administration and organisational skills, and who has time on their hands! If you hear of anyone, do let me know… I know you’ve said that you created the rally to raise awareness of the charity, but do you fundraise as well? Initially, the aim was to raise awareness, but I found that people wanted to make donations, so we now raise money for the wigs too. We have a JustGiving Team www.justgiving.com/teams/pink-car-rally-2012 and we have set a massive target of £10,000 this year. In addition to the rally, I have also organised a Special Pink Raffle. Tickets are available via www.justgiving.com/specialpinkraffle and there are 17 fabulous pink prizes! The 1st prize is a special haircut, by celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford and a goody bag of his products. (Value £500) Well I hope you achieve the target, Sali. Good luck and do update us after the Rally.

Cotswold Care Hospice Sign up to Cotswold Care Hospice’s lottery during the charity’s 25th anniversary year and you could win £25,000. The hospice’s weekly Unity Lottery costs just £1 to play with the top prize of £25,000. You can sign up at the hospice’s charity shop in Hucclecote. “We need 700 new players to sign up in the lottery for the next year - that will help pay a year’s salary for a Hospice at Home nurse,” said Jules Eaton, Chief Executive of Cotswold Care Hospice. “While £1 a week may not seem much, together you can make a huge difference to those people we support and care for.” The Hospice at Home team look after people in their own homes and support their families. This year they will provide more than 19,000 hours of care. Cotswold Care Hospice provides all of its services free of charge. It costs £2.85 million a year to run the charity with 90 per cent of that coming from the community. “Please make our silver anniversary year special and sign up to our lottery. You will be helping us care for people in Gloucestershire and you may be in with a chance to win £25,000,” said Jules. To find out more visit the Cotswold Care Hospice shop in Hucclecote Road, Bisley Street, Painswick, or log on to www.unitylottery.co.uk

Flowers,, Tubs and Borders Flowers • • • •
• • • • •
Continue to water and feed baskets and tubs regularly Spray roses to control black spot and mildew, pick up and dispose of any fallen leaves as these can carry disease forward to next year. Tie in any new growth on ramblers or climbers as this will provide the framework for next year. Vine weevils will be laying eggs in tubs and containers and Lily beetles will be very common so it’s a good time to water the compost with Bio Provado helping solve the problems for up to 4 months. Prune Wisteria by reducing back this years growth to 5/6 buds Pick Sweet peas regularly to encourage more flower production. Keep Camellias, Magnolias Rhododendrons and Azaleas well watered. Its at this time of year they produce flowering buds for next year, if they dry out the buds will drop off. Trim over Lavenders, Santolinas and Curry plants after flowering, doing this will keep the plants compact and fresh, careful not to cut into the old wood. August is a great month for taking cuttings – these are semi ripe wood cuttings ( shoots that have not flowered and are now starting to age but not yet turned woody) Root in a gritty compost. Plants you can choose are for example – Lavenders, Penstemons, Hydrangeas, Rosemary, Salvias, Heathers etc..
Fruit and Vegetables • • • • • • •
Pinch out the tips of runner beans as soon as they reach the top of the canes/poles. Pick Courgettes regularly encouraging new production Strawberries will be producing runners ‘pin’ these down into small pots of compost they will root in a week or so and give you new plants for next year. Continue to feed tomato plants with a high potash feed such as Tomorite Pinch out side shoots to ensure all the goodness goes to the fruit. Earth up main crop potatoes to increase the crop. Cut down Raspberry canes that have fruited and tie up the new canes for next year. Toward the end of the month sow spring Cabbage and Winter Spinach.
Ponds • •
Remove blanket weed by twisting it around a cane or stick. Continue to feed the fish.
Plant of the Month – Ceratostigma willmottianum – Hardy Plumbago - wonderful small shrub growing up to 2ft in height and bearing incredibly bright blue flowers from end July/August onwards. A sunny position on free draining soil will suit this plant. The green foliage will turn red in autumn, trim back old growth each spring so that new shoots appear. Check out our web site www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. St Philip and St James Church 'With the English weather dominating the Jubilee celebrations our focus is on the second big event of 2012 the long awaited Olympic Games. How will our British athletes do as we seek to plunder the gold medals? Up and down the country people will be following their favourite sports and watching sporting heroes. In Hucclecote we will be watching local rower Beth Rodford as she competes to bring a gold medal back to Gloucester. With all the fuss surrounding the Olympics I hope we won't forget the fantastic Paralympic Games. To me these athletes are all heroes and superstars. Despite their disabilities and injuries sustained they will push hard to bring home the medals. From wheelchair rugby and basketball to the track and field events there is something to grab every spectator's interest. The personal stories of many of these paralympians are often as captivating as the sporting events themselves. God has given each one of us gifts and talents and though we may never win gold at the Olympics or Paralympics we have talents and abilities that make us unique. In the Bible we are encouraged to run the race of life with perseverance with God himself as our goal and prize. Do you need some encouragement to keep going today? Have you lost sight of God in the busyness of life's race? He's watching, he's waiting, he's cheering you on. Keep going! Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road'
Larkhay W.I. does not meet in August, but as we start again, fully refreshed, we invite you to join us for the following meetings: Thursday the 13th September; a talk by Margaret Roy, entitled "Letters from a Submariner". Thursday the 11th October ; "Textile Art" Talk and demonstration by Gill Allen. Meetings are held in the Hucclecote Community Centre (Library), and start at 7:30 p.m. A warm welcome awaits you all! For further details ring Frances (614596) or Beverley (613208) We look forward to meeting you!.
Silverdale W.I. held a marvellous party at their May meeting to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Members sat down to a sumptious 5 course luncheon prepared by the committee and we decorated our hall with as many red, white and blue flags, balloons and banners as we could lay our hands on. We asked the members to bring with them memorabilia which they had showing previous royal occasions and we had some marvellous exhibits. We also held a poetry competition and members voted Judy Mean's poem in which she reminisced of the memories she had when King George died and Elizabeth became Queen as the winner. Altogether we had a wonderful time. Our next venture is our annual garden party which is to be held on the lawn in front of our meeting hall - Carisbrooke Road Methodist Church Hall Hucclecote Road. As we do not have a meeting in August we are going to have a day out at Webbs of Wychbold, this is going to be held on Weds 22nd August and all members and visitors are invited to join us.Anyone wishing to come please contact 01452 618680.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Almost a ‘full house’ of Hucclecote TG members and visitors gathered for the June meeting, to hear Jilly Baker talk to us about ‘ Lingerie’- and an enthralling and interesting evening it turned out to be, as Jilly told us how she had started her career and training, initially working in retailing lingerie, and progressing from there to various projects one of these working with Trinny and Susannah, of the TV programme “What not to wear” as they attempted to dress ladies around the country from the “inside out”, encouraging them to ensure that underwear-bras especially, were the right shape and size for each individual, and what a difference this would make to the look of the outerwear ! There was an opportunity to look at the many different styles of lingerie, and also many questions from members at the end of the talk, a really enjoyable evening. There will be no meeting in August on the third Thursday of the month, but please remember the Fashion Show at the Community Centre on Thursday 2nd August at 7-30, proceeds to Hucclecote Community Centre and obtain your tickets for this from Linda on 01452 617701.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our Wisley trip turned out to be a great success – 36 of us were blessed with good weather, and some wonderful displays in the gardens – my own favourite being the magnificent displays of sweet peas in the trials section: I must do better myself next year! Members are already asking us to plan another trip next year and making suggestions for our destination. 23rd August will see us holding our annual Member’s flower and produce show, with judging by a local expert Robert Champion. Many members bring along at least one exhibit, and Robert is always full of useful tips on how to grow better produce, rather than offering too many criticisms of what we are doing wrong. This year the weather has not been at all kind to gardeners, but I feel sure that people will come up trumps on the night. In September we have a speaker from Wanborough Nurseries, who will be taking us through the herbs that we can grow, and their uses, either in cookery or as a form of home medicine. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694. PS I have been asked to say please don’t be put off coming along to a meeting by the Society’s name. We are actually your local gardening club – we do have one or two experts, but most of us still want to listen and learn! To advertise call 01452 617040

Hearts and Hurricanes WI It’s been a busy year since Hearts & Hurricanes had its first meeting in February 2012. We’ve had local residents and experts in to give us talks/demonstrations on cake decorating, hanging basket preparation, chocolate and cheese tasting and this month we had a craft evening, members either bringing in their own projects or having a go at a sewing project that the WI have started. It was an informal evening, a chance for a chat whilst enjoying a cup of tea or a glass of wine and some cake. On the 8th August we will have a walk, meeting at Coopers Edge School at 7.30pm. We’re hoping to spot some of the wildlife that’s on our doorstep, this will be a great opportunity for anyone new to the area to find out where the local bridleways and short cuts are. This event is open to all, men, women and children so bring a camera and suitable footwear. The charge for non members is £3 per adult, children are free – this includes cake and drinks at the school afterwards. There are more activities planned later on this year, Autumn gardens, beer and cider tasting, and a Christmas themed food event. New members are more than welcome at this newly established WI. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at Coopers Edge school at 7.30pm. Entry is free for members and £3.00 for non members. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served. We also have a monthly raffle and a book swap for 20p a book. Please join our Facebook page for regular news or for more details contact Tara Davidson on 07948 966 957
