A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the August edition of your Hucclecote Link. Wow - what a scorcher July turned out to be...now the question is will it hold out for the Summer Holidays? Wouldn’t it be great to have a Summer holiday in England this year, and know that you only need to pack Summer clothes!!! Are you off on your holidays this month...If so perhaps you would like a bit of pampering before hand. Well, we have a couple of local beauticians advertising with us this month, one who has a local salon in Hucclecote, Body Flair on page 24, and Beauty by Emma on page 19 who can come out to visit you if you prefer. Perhaps you could do with a quick colour and cut of your hair before you go away - try Headcase Hair on page 24. Have you thought about your pets whilst you are away over the Summer - Hornbys Doggie Carers let your dog have a holiday too, if you need someone to look after them, give them a call - see page 19. Or maybe your dog could just do with a pamper - Nails and Tails on page 23 offer a great grooming service. Why not try our Sudoku competition on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the local Cineworld. Congratulations to Mr Cronin for winning last months Sudoku. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month and enjoy your Summer Sarah.

Dave’s top tips LED lighting LED (light emitting diode) Lighting will be the future of lighting, these new eco-friendly light bulbs save both money and energy. A typical unit can last well over 35 000 hours of continuous operation, that’s over 15 years if used for 6 hours every day! They can also have a significant reduction on your lighting bill. There are a number of direct halogen replacement bulbs like the new GU10 and E27, simply plug these replacement bulbs straight in to the old fixtures. In addition, there are direct replacement bulbs for your existing lamps and old light fixtures, these bulbs feature the same screw or bayonet fitting but benefit from running low level LED lighting saving both energy and money. LED strip lights are simple to install and are an illuminating addition to a kitchen, bathroom, lounge, hall, cupboard or even the garden shed. In addition to the LED strip, you will need a transformer for each meter of strip lighting. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Gardening Tips for August from Garden Delight..

21

Flowers, Tubs and Borders Continue to water and feed baskets and tubs regularly Spray roses to control black spot and mildew, pick up and dispose of any fallen leaves as these can carry disease forward to next year. Tie in any new growth on ramblers or climbers as this will provide the framework for next year. Vine weevils will be laying eggs in tubs and containers and Lily beetles will be very common so it’s a good time to water the compost with Bio Provado helping solve the problems for up to 4 months. Prune Wisteria by reducing back this years growth to 5/6 buds Pick Sweet peas regularly to encourage more flower production. Keep Camellias, Magnolias Rhododendrons and Azaleas well watered. Its at this time of year they produce flowering buds for next year, if they dry out the buds will drop off. Trim over Lavenders, Santolinas and Curry plants after flowering, doing this will keep the plants compact and fresh, careful not to cut into the old wood. August is a great month for taking cuttings – these are semi ripe wood cuttings ( shoots that have not flowered and are now starting to age but not yet turned woody) Root in a gritty compost. Plants you can choose are for example – Lavenders, Penstemons, Hydrangeas, Rosemary, Salvias, Heathers etc..

Fruit and Vegetables Pinch out the tips of runner beans as soon as they reach the top of the canes/poles. Pick Courgettes regularly encouraging new production Strawberries will be producing runners ‘pin’ these down into small pots of compost they will root in a week or so and give you new plants for next year. Continue to feed tomato plants with a high potash feed such as Tomorite Pinch out side shoots to ensure all the goodness goes to the fruit. Earth up main crop potatoes to increase the crop. Cut down Raspberry canes that have fruited and tie up the new canes for next year. Toward the end of the month sow spring Cabbage and Winter Spinach. As usual it’s the weather that proves the most challenge in the garden after a few years of wet summers and the late spring we now have the very hot dry days to contend with. The brown lawns and roadside verges give an indication of how dry the ground is. Watering is very important but must be done effectively and efficiently so not to waste the water or the time and to give maximum benefit to the plants. Hard as it seems the lawns will recover attention needs to be given to tubs and containers and valuable shrubs. Water either early in the morning or later in the evening when any water is less likely to evaporate away. Ensure your tubs are topped up with compost to retain as much water as possible and try to water gently so as not to wash compost away and each day so the water is retained rather than pouring out of the bottom of the tub. Check you shrub borders for plants with drooping leaves sometimes its just a reaction to the high temperatures and they will perk up as soon as the sun goes down, but often it shows dryness at the roots and a half a can of water will revive the shrub and ensure its survival. Tomato plants in grow bags often dry out its important you keep these moist as inconsistent watering will lead to problems with fruit production, same for other container grown vegatables. Finally put some water for the birds and other wildlife as they will really appreciate it. Check out our web site www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. Remember there are principles to successful gardening but no formulas.

When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist -- reborn as The Mother F%&*^r -- only the blade-wielding Hit Girl can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world's first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she's forced to retire-leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world's first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make KickAss and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there's only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Hucclecote Scout Group With the fine weather all our meetings have been outside on the field next to the Scout H.Q. The main event coming is the Summer camp at St Mawgans near Newquay in Cornwall with 50 scouts and Explorers on camp. A very good site away from the crowds with a stream running along side of the field and a small wood on the other side. Apart from doing all cooking on open fires (it will be great fun if the heat wave continues), we have a full range of Scouting activities with swimming every day on the golden beaches. Visits to Padstow, Perrinporth and Lands End Experience are on the programme with a half days activities at Lusty Glaze. There is much talk about youth not doing much except computer games, but Scouts like many other organisations give plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities. The cubs held their annual camp at Cranham with 24 Cubs enjoying the good weather with archery, craft work and many other activities. Cubs start back on Weds 4th September and Scouts on Friday 6th September, with new cubs replacing Scouts moving up to Explorers. Beavers start back week beginning 9th September. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information if you have children who may be interested in joining.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society By the time you read this I shall probably have been humiliated in the Horticultural quiz which we enjoyed at our July meeting. To my team mates, ‘sorry, I will try to do better next time’. Our June meeting was an excellent one with Dave Cropp giving us a lot of tips on basically how to garden better, particularly in the light of climate change. I took some notes, so if anyone would like a copy of them, come along to one of our meetings and pick one up. We have also enjoyed a trip to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Although only a couple of miles from the city centre, the gardens are really an absolute delight to visit, with much to see as well as plenty of seats on which to rest your weary bones. They are to be recommended – my wife has already pencilled them in for a repeat visit next year. Our August meeting, on the 22nd, is our annual flower and produce show. After a horrible start to the year weather-wise, things in the garden are now catching up really well, so all being well we will have plenty of good items on display. Visitors are welcome, though entries are limited to society members. Our good friend Robert Champion is judging again, and his tips on improving produce are always well received - if not necessarily acted upon. September 26th sees a Members’ evening, combined with our annual seed and plant swop. We always combine these evenings with a fun quiz or some other activity, and members go home having had an enjoyable evening, and equipped with something new to try next year. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with To advertise call 01452 617040 and membership are not refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.

‘Love Gloucester!

29

I wonder if you have ever listened to criticism of someone or something you love or respect and found yourself in defensive mode. Since moving to Gloucester, I have had a number of people from elsewhere in the county questioning why I might want to live here. I don’t just want to live in this city, I love this city! Gloucester has a fabulous array of shops, businesses, premiership rugby, many places to eat or visit and, at the heart of it, a very special Cathedral that dominates the city skyline in virtually every direction. We have a lot to be thankful for. A few weeks ago I heard myself pray ‘Lord, you love this city’ and I truly believe that to be the case. I am not blinkered to the very real issues we face as citizens in this place but it is still an inspiring city. I wonder how often we celebrate the good things we enjoy and the wonderful provisions available to us. Thank you God for Gloucester! Rev’d Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road’

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild At the June meeting of Hucclecote T G, there were 4 items of good news; firstly three new members were officially welcomed into the Guild; secondly a record amount of money was raised for Guild Funds at the yearly car park duty ;then thirteen members enjoyed ‘Afternoon Tea ‘ at Cheltenham Park Hotel, and Mrs Susan Marshfield, an old friend of Guild was welcomed as our speaker. Mrs Marshfield proceded to tell us her thoughts on “Being in the Right Place at the Right Time” with especial reference to meetings with the Royal family, as, on reflection, while preparing a talk for a Jubilee celebration, she realised she had come into contact with many of the ‘Royals’ over the years, finally being in the “Right Place at the Right Time” to meet the Queen at a Reception at St James Palace-! the talk being very entertaining as usual. August meeting this year will be an informal “Open Evening”, when members friends and guests are invited for a Social Evening taking place on Thursday Aug. 15th at 7-30pm, when there will be a ‘Mini Summer Fayre’ –a Grand Raffle as well as a chance to chat and meet each other. All welcome to attend. Thursday September 19th at 7-30pm will be our usual monthly meeting at Hucclecote Community Centre when Mrs Mary Stokes will talk to Guild members and guests about to a very to interesting Please‘Natural mentionRemedies’, we look forward when responding adverts evening.
