Dave’s top ps Magne c catches Magne c catches are an ideal method of providing hidden access points or simply to keep a door, or cupboard open or closed. The principle is simple. One side of the catch is a magnet, or series of magnets and the other side is a piece of steel. Depending on your needs, the magnet part of the catch is fixed onto some ba ens or onto a kitchen carcass side and the steel plates are fixed to a cover mber or door. The more magne c catches you use then the stronger the hold will be. For a really light touch where the a rac on between, a cupboard door and the frame it closes into is very gentle, the magnet can be posi oned a li le further back on the frame so it does not quite touch the steel plate. The magne sm between the two will s ll work but the magnet will only exert a small a rac on making it easier to open the door. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top ps along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the inves ga ng for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rec fied so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

******************************************************* Safe and Healthy Weight Loss. With summer holidays approaching, and the recent wonderful weather we have been having, our thoughts often turn to losing weight, except for the awful thought of seeing more of our flesh than usual, which can cause most of us to suffer total panic. Flesh, perhaps, that has been covered with thick winter clothing for so many months of the year, then suddenly we are in thinner briefer clothes and even swimming costumes or bikinis, and the sight of pale wobbly flesh staring back at us in the mirror causes ghastly panic. What can we do, what can be done? Help! And whilst staring at the reflection, it just seems hopelessly impossible that we can diet in time for our holidays, especially if they are to be on foreign shores with stronger climates. But panic not, because rather than resorting to crash diets that quite frankly aren't safe, and which will put back the weight back on again, and more, as soon as you stop, surely it is better to think about the long-term health advantages of losing the weight in a safe, healthy and sensible way. And that is where I come in! If you decide to make an appointment with me here at 33 Green Lane, Hucclecote, GL3 3QU, you will be given a two hour session, and in that time we will discuss your eating habits, your strengths and weaknesses, we will also do a health questionnaire, and together we will discuss a way that you feel comfortable with, and I will also explain various tips and ideas that can help you to stick to a sensible diet or as I prefer to call it, a sensible eating plan, so as to enable you to see the scales reduce. All this will be in a safe, sensible and healthy way. Hypnotherapy can be used to enable your willpower to aid your weight loss. And you might say "what willpower?", but everyone has some, and together we will harness yours and make it work for you. So why wait any longer? Go and have another look in the mirror at your naked body, (just make sure it's not in front of a mirror in Tesco's!!)and if you are emotionally comfortable with your reflection, then that is all well and good. If on the other hand you are not, then why not ring me on the number below, to find out how, along with my help, you can learn tricks and tips and ways, to reduce your weight in a safe, sensible and healthy way. I can also record a CD especially for you and if you need to come back for a top-up session that will be discussed as well. To quote Del Trotter, "you know it makes sense!"

Hucclecote Scout News

By now our summer camp in Yorkshire will be over and thoughts turning to the Father/Mums and sons/daughters camp at Cranham in September. Friday evenings have been mainly dry so we had our usual Midsummer Madness evening when everyone came in costume and ended up with a water fight. The pioneer bridge went well with twist making (dough baked on a stick) to a game on the stream on other evenings. For our last meeting before the summer break we have 10 small side shows of games of skill Scouts have a go at the various activities and earn marshmallow which they can toast on the Bar B Q. The evening ends with a buffet which soon disappears. Very pleased that William Hunt and Jack Cloverley have gained their Chief Scout Award, this is the top award in the Scout section. A party of Scouts helped clear the paths at the parish Hall as part of their community badge. Any boys and girls 6 to 14 years old who are interested in joining the group are welcome to come along in September (week the schools go back) and see what fun Scouting is. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Isn’t this a great time of year in the garden, or at the allotment? If you are growing flowers, you are probably seeing gorgeous displays of whatever are your favourites, and if you grow veg then you will be delighting at the taste of the food that you have grown yourself. Which is really an introduction to our August meeting, which is the members’ annual produce show. Chelsea it isn’t to be honest, but we have had some good displays in previous years, and this year we are trying to put more emphasis on flowers and a bit less on the veg – I am looking forward to seeing how it works out. That and a cake competition – this year the entry is a half dozen cup cakes – no theme – as the fancy takes you. Sadly I won’t be judging those.... . As usual, visitors are more than welcome, though entries are restricted to members. September 25th sees a visit from John Crowther of the Brimscombe Hedgehog Sanctuary. Sadly, like so many other species, hedgehogs are thinner on the ground than they were. And as a help to gardeners by eating slugs, we are hoping to find out how we can help to encourage them and see if we can make a difference to their numbers. Sadly the raspberries and strawberries are now just about over as I write this, though there looks to be a good crop of runner beans on the way. The first potatoes are almost ready to pull, and the first tomatoes were delicious – roll on the cucumbers and the courgettes. Why not join us one evening and find out more about us. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, absolutely no need to be an expert – I’m not. More information from Chris on 610694. Hucclecote Townswomen Guild The speaker at the June meeting was Elizabeth Payne, from the Cotswold Canals Trust. Elizabeth gave an absorbing talk, beautifully illustrated with photographs, of the restoration of the Stroudwater Navigation, and the Thames & Severn Canals, together known as the "Cotswolds Canals", which opened in 1779. These canals brought prosperity to the the mills of the Stroud Valley by bringing coal as an alternative to water power, and improved the transport links to and from the area. The canals closed in the mid-1930s, and were allowed to fall into disrepair. With grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and help from many, many Trust volunteers, the canals, their towpaths and surroundings are a beautiful amenity, used by walkers and cyclists. The old mills along the Stroud Valley are now desirable places to live, and the restored Cotswold Canals enhance this. Hucclecote Townswomen's Guild meets at Hucclecote community Centre on the third Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea and coffee, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 01452 617701 for more information. The Gloucestershire Federation of Townswomens' Guilds are holding and Arts and Crafts Day at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on Friday 15th August. This is open to the public from noon, admission is free, so please pop and in and have a look around. There will be sales tables, and refreshments will be on sale.

‘Rest “Why don’t you just give it a rest!” a phrase many parents will either say or think over the long weeks of Summer as normally occupied children look for guidance in which games they could play, seek resolution for sibling disputes or ask hopefully for food, drink or sweets moments after a large meal. Holidays can be and are great times for relaxation, fun, families and friends but often we find ourselves rushing around beforehand ensuring work is complete, clothes are washed and ready, and pet care is arranged for a brief few days before returning to the bulging In-tray, mountain of mail or heap of laundry. An older lady called into the church recently, “I’m so glad you were open,” she said. “I just needed somewhere to rest for a while”. She had been shopping and was weighed down with heavy bags. In the Bible, God invites those who are heavy burdened and in need of rest to come to him. God knows the pressures and responsibilities in our lives and also, as Creator, the limits of what we can take. I pray that this summer you will find time to stop and rest, whether that is on lazy weekends or exotic foreign holidays. I pray that you are able to spend time with the ones you love. I pray that you may also know a deeper rest that God gives to those who look for him. Steve Godsell, Assistant Minister, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote.’ Please mention
