Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the August edition of your Hucclecote Link. For once I am writing this as the schools break up for Summer and the weather is amazing,,, fingers crossed it continues! Whether you are staying in the UK for the Summer, or are lucky enough to be heading abroad, you may be thinking now is the time when you would like to loose those few extra pounds. To help you get ready we have a few local companies that could help, whether it’s joining local Zumba classes, or taking advantage of a VIP Pass at Spirit Health Club, you can find all the companies on our index on page 34. We also have some local beauty salons that can help you get Summer ready, The Beauty Spot on page 25, Body Flair on page 22 along with Therapy by Sam Baggott, where you can purchase discounted skin products with SPF, to help protect your skin this Summer. If you own your own caravan that needs a service before you go away or perhaps it requires new parts, give GL Caravan Care a ring on page 8, we can personally recommend them. Finally if you are looking for something to do over the bank holiday weekend pay a visit to the Gloucester Goes Retro event taking place in the heart of the city centre - read more about it on page 27. Congratulations to Mrs P.M. Cruttenden for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great Summer .... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Drilling holes in ceramic tiles Ok , so you have just tiled your bathroom and need to fit a few items to the wall such as a towel rail. But those tiles seem so hard and slippery, what is the best way to drill a hole? The first thing you need to do is mark out where the hole needs to be and apply some masking tape to said mark. This will help prevent the drill from slipping around on the tiles surface. Next fit a masonry bit of correct size into your drill and set the hammer action of the drill to OFF. Align the drill with your mark and slowly start to apply pressure with the drill running fairly slowly. This should give you a slight indentation on the tile as the drill cuts in. Gradually increase the speed but being careful not to overheat the drill bit and not applying too much pressure. Gradually the drill will pass through the tile and you can then apply the hammer action to drill through the actual wall. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Film Releases for August 2018
3rd August 2018 Ant-Man and The Wasp Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael PeĂąa In the aftermath of 'Captain America: Civil War,' Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to re-balance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he's confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past. 3rd August 2018 Teen Titans Go! To the Movies Starring: Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Tara Strong It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies-everyone but the Teen Titans, that is. But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously super villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line. 10th August 2018 The Meg Starring: Ruby Rose, Jason Statham, Rainn Wilson Five years ago, expert sea diver and Naval Captain Jonas Taylor encountered an unknown danger in the unexplored recesses of the Mariana Trench that forced him to abort his mission and abandon half his crew. Though the tragic incident earned him a dishonorable discharge, what ultimately cost him his career, his marriage and any semblance of honor was his unsupported and incredulous claims of what caused it - an attack on his vessel by a mammoth, 70-foot sea creature, believed to be extinct for more than a million years. But when a submersible lies sunk and disabled at the bottom of the ocean - carrying his ex-wife among the team onboard - he is the one who gets the call. Whether a shot at redemption or a suicide mission, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life and the lives of everyone trapped below on a single question: Could the Carcharodon Megalodon - the largest marine predator that ever existed - still be alive ... and on the hunt? 10th August 2018 The Negotiator Starring: Jon Hamm, Jay Potter, Khalid Benchagra Mason Skiles had a great life as a diplomat in Beirut. He and his wife, Nadia, live in a beautiful house and have been mentoring a thirteen year-old Palestinian boy named Karim. The opening scene is a party that the Stiles are hosting for other dignitaries. Karim is helping out serving the guests. When a CIA friend of Mason, Cal, comes to the party he is interested only in taking Karim in for questioning about an older brother Mason doesn't know about. What happens that night changes Mason's life forever, along several others at the party... 17th August 2018 Disney's Christopher Robin Starring: Hayley Atwell, Ewan McGregor, Toby Jones An adult Christopher Robin, who is now focused on his new life, work, and family, suddenly meets his old friend Winnie the Pooh, who returns to his unforgotten childhood past to help him return to the Hundred Acre Wood and help find Pooh's lost friends. 24th August 2018 Alpha Starring: Natassia Malthe, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leonor Varela After a Steppe bison hunting expedition 20,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period goes awry, a young man struggles against the elements to find his way home, all the while developing a friendship with a wolf. This forges the tentative first bond between man and canine.

Hucclecote Scout News The celebrations for 90 years of the Scout Group went well, with good weather. In the main hall were photos and records from 1949 (when I first joined as a 12 year old). Many things in Scouting have changed since then, when we met at the reading room on Barnwood Road (near Barnwood Ave). We then moved to Barnwood Ave (where the school is) in 1980, then to Hucclecote again in our own H.Q and changed our name from Barnwood to Hucclecote Scouting Group. Since then the Group has grown to two Beaver colonies of 40, one Cub unit of 35, a Scout unit of 30 and Explorer unit of 20. The celebration filled the whole day with many old Scouts coming along, with a bouncy castle and other games for the children. Cooking twists (dough wrapped around a stick and cooked on an open fire went well), with music in the hall early evening, then ending with a camp fire and all the usual songs. We are pleased to welcome 5 cubs who are coming into Scouts in September and with the best for the five Scouts going into Explorer Unit. The Scouts and Explorers are off to Austria for the first two weeks of the school holidays, they are on a Scout camp site which we have used before. All units start back when the Schools start, new members always welcome, Beavers 6 to 8, Cubs 8 to 10 (get name on waiting list for both), and Scouts 10 to 14. Phone Terry on 521662 for more details.
Hucclecote Garden Club In this blistering heat, it was good to hear the cool, calming voice of our June Speaker, Caroline Sheldrick, BA(Hons) BSc (Hons) MNIMH, Medical Herbalist from France Lynch near Stroud, talking on the subject ' Medicinal Herbs in the Garden'. Although many cooking programmes on tv advocate using herbs in our cooking for taste, it was interesting to hear the many and varied medicinal benefits provided by the ordinary herbs in our garden. The National Institute of Medical Herbalists was established in 1864 and is the oldest body of practising medical herbalists in the world. Plants are still the main source of medicine for 70% of the world's population. If you get the chance to hear Caroline speak don't miss it. As the RHS Hampton Court Palace Show draws to a conclusion, we cannot wait to welcome Roger Turner from Brockworth giving us the low-down on 'Making a Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show'. Also, in August we have our annual Plant & Produce Show, where our Members bring along their prize exhibits of tomatoes, beans, carrots, etc., etc., to be judged by Bob Champion from Down Hatherley, who is also Vice Chairman of Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies. This is a fun night where all are welcome. We meet on the fourth Thursday each month at 7.30pm in Hucclecote Community Centre, please come along and pick up a few gardening tips, for further information contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. At our June meeting Janet Dowling (clinical hypnotherapist) gave us a talk on “Stress Management and the importance of sleep”. This is more prevalent today, with tablet computers and mobile phones etc: She said because we all have very busy lives we have to prioritise and she gave us examples of techniques we could use. Again this month we have croquet lined up as it was very popular last year and went down very well. We have many activities and various speakers throughout the year such as meals out, archery, clay pigeon shooting etc; lots to look forward to. As we do not have a meeting in August we will be having a strawberry cream tea at one of our member’s garden. After all of our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome
Tuesday @ Two What is it? A social gathering where you can meet your own friends (or make new ones); if you like playing games (Canasta, Scrabble, Rummy Cub) these are available or bring your favourite game with you. The afternoon finishes with home made cake and a cup of tea.
Where is it held? In the Church Centre, behind the church in Larkhay Road 2 - 4 pm
Is there a charge? A donation of £1.50 to cover the cost of cake and tea would be appreciated
When does the group meet? First & third Tuesday in month - August - 7th & 21st September - 4th & 18th October 2nd - 16th
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets on the third Thursday each month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. Meetings include a speaker or demonstration covering a wide range of topics; a raffle; the bring and buy sales table, refreshments, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Our recent speaker was Ben Ashenden on Tax Care and Toy Boys, an interesting and informative exploration of financial planning, particularly in later life. Inheritance Tax can be seen as a voluntary tax, which can be reduced with a bit of careful planning. It was certainly a thought-provoking topic! Our next speaker is Claire Wiseman on Hand and Nail Care, and in August our summer coach trip is to Oakham Treasures in Bristol. Later in the summer it's the inter-Guild Skittles Tournament, and there will be a Coffee Morning to raise funds for Gloucestershire Young Carers, our chosen charity this year. Guests and visitors are welcome at the Guild, phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
