Dave’s top tips How to solder a pipe joint

There are two types of fitting to make a soldered pipe joint, one which comes with a ring of solder already inside each end of the fitting, called a Yorkshire fitting, and the other, an end feed fitting. Soldered joints make a neat, tidy job but require a little practice and total cleanliness to "make" properly. If in doubt, compression joints, although bulkier, are easier to manage for the DIY'er First clean both the pipe and the fitting, inside and out, with wire wool until it is bright and shiny. You will then need to apply a liberal amount of flux to both the pipe and the fitting. Flux is a paste, which when activated by heat, removes oxides from the surface of the metal promoting fusion between the surfaces. Use a small, clean brush to apply the flux. Then "dry fit" as much of the pipe work together as you can, place all the pieces together where you want them and remember, with Yorkshire fittings you cannot just heat one end of the joint. The heat will travel to the other end and melt the solder ring,. This will make it impossible to connect to later on. Using a lead free wire solder and a protection mat, heat the joint with a blow lamp until, with a Yorkshire fitting, you can see bright ring of solder appearing between the fitting and the pipe. With an end feed fitting, touch the solder stick to the joint until it melts on contact. Then run the wire round the joint for as much of it as you can get to. The solder will melt at approximately 180 degrees c, so it gets pretty hot! Remove the heat when the solder starts to melt. The application of solder is still a good idea with Yorkshire fittings to be absolutely sure of a good joint. Make sure you have a damp rag handy, and after a few seconds, to allow the solder to set, carefully wipe the joint round. This will cool it and clean it. And finally if in doubt then please call and we can sort your soldered pipes for you, See main ad below. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club

Later this month we will be involved with the local community event Hucclecote Hullabaloo, which takes place at the Pineholt Village Hall on Saturday 6th July, from 12 to 2.00pm. I know it is hoped that Danny Cipriana will be opening the event, which should be a huge draw and Radio Gloucestershire will be at the event on the day. Our July speaker is David Hartnell who is Chairman of the Bristol Cactus Society and will be talking on 'The growing of cacti and their history', with the current trend for exotic houseplants this should be of interest to gardeners and non-gardeners alike. We had a wonderful trip to Wells Cathedral and the Bishops Palace and Gardens in June and will soon be making plans for our 2020 trip. Why not come along to our Garden Club where you will receive a warm welcome. We have a popular raffle, tea & coffee and biscuits, great speakers and advice on tap from some very experienced local gardeners. For more information please contact either Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) at Hucclecote Community Centre.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

Our meeting in June was a talk by William Reddaway. ‘One Man, One Horse, 30 Cathedrals’. As a charity event it took a lot of planning to arrange visits to all 30 cathedrals and the complexities of arranging not only accommodation for himself but also for his horse. He travelled all over the country and at times had to walk part of the way if either his horse became lame or tired. It was very interesting, very enjoyable. Following every talk we have tea and biscuits and time for a chat and a raffle. We have no meeting in August, but we still have things to look forward to such as strawberry tea one afternoon which is always delicious. We have a Croquet afternoon coming up and it is always a lot of fun and afterwards we have a fabulous tea, which we think we have earned. We will meet again in September where we have a full programme which takes us up until December. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except August). Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 for more information or just pop in, you will be made very welcome.
