Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the August edition of your Hucclecote Link. Can you believe it is August already! It feels like we had January and February and then - Wham here we are in August! Life is starting to feel like it is getting back on track slowly, although the rules do seem to keep changing still week on week. Thankfully for our fantastic local businesses, the government are starting to give the go ahead for those industries that were still having to keep their doors closed. So this month we warmly welcome back; local solicitors Dee & Griffin based in Hucclecote, Therapy by Sam Baggott - a local beauty therapist and Spirit Health Club based within the Barnwood Holiday Inn. Obviously they all have had to make alterations to enable them to open safely, so please check their websites before visiting them, but this is such good news and we wish them all the best when they open their doors to customers again. As I mentioned before, Covid 19 will have had such an impact on our local businesses that now more that ever it is a really important time for us to help support them and help get them back on their feet. We are proud to support many local businesses, and we do hope that over the coming months they will all be able to open their doors and we will be able to promote their fantastic services to you soon. Dave’s top tips Painting a flush door
A flush door is a door without any additions. There are no panels or glazing windows just a straight forward flat faced door. Painting a flush door, although they are the most basic of doors, is one of the hardest job of all door painting as there can be no break when painting a side. If you stop for more than a minute or two the edge of the paint hardens and this can show through the painted finish as a ridge in the paintwork. The flush door should be held open by using door wedges pushed in under the door after a piece of cardboard or old carpet off cut has been pushed under the door to protect the floor. Take off the door handles and smear a tiny bit of Vaseline on the hinges. This will stop any paint sticking to them and if you do get paint on the hinges it will allow you to wipe it off easily. Use the hose of the Hoover to suck out any sawdust from the lock or latch apertures. Flush doors can be painted by using a roller and if you do this use a small (radiator) roller. Go over the rolled door with a dry brush to brush out any stipple effects the roller may have left. It is much better, especially when using gloss paint to use a roller with natural fibres such as sheepskin, mohair or wool. Regards Dave Stevens. Hucclecote Garden Club Hucclecote Garden Club continues but as an online entity, as with many other Garden Clubs locally and in the country generally. We were all looking forward hearing our great 2020 programme of speakers including a first for us - Favourite Plants and a General Gardeners Question Time, given by Mr. Jim Teague from Evesham, who was due to speak to us in July. Another regular speaker we will miss this year is Mr. Duncan Coombs who was speaking on Autumn Colour and interest in the Garden, finally for October we had a much looked forward to new speaker to Hucclecote, Nathalie Mignotte with a talk on Garden of the Sun King, Gardens of Versailles. We will be re-booking them for 2021, so much to anticipate in our new 'normal'. Thanks are due to Jenny our Newsletter Queen who continues updating our Members with a horticultural quiz, Members photos and virtual Gardens to enjoy online. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD
Future plans for the Guild are still under discussion, taking into account guidance issued by the Hucclecote Community Centre, where our evening meetings are held, normally on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30 pm. As soon as a firm date is established for the first meeting after the Covid19 restrictions have been lifted enough, it will be published in The Link, with full details of the speaker, and any new rules which will have to be followed. As well as arranging speakers and demonstrations for the evening meetings, there will be a range of activities and outings to look forward to. Hucclecote Larkhay WI The Larkhay WI has come to a very sad decision that because of the pandemic and government guidelines, we will not have a meeting for the rest of 2020. We have let all our member know by letter, but will be keeping in touch with them as best we can. After many weeks of lockdown, no one knows what will happen and we will do our best to get through this time and look forward to 2021. We are very optimistic and have already planned next years monthly meetings and fingers crossed we will all be back together, enjoying our meetings and the best bit— socializing.
