A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Welcome to the December edition of your Hucclecote Link. The countdown to Christmas has now well and truly begun! Its even starting to feel like Christmas with the cold weather and frosty mornings! With the Christmas adverts now all on the telly, I even saw the coca-cola advert yesterday - so I know its time to get a move on with buying those cards and presents now! If you’ve not made a start on your Christmas shopping this year, why not let us help you. Body Flair, on the front cover, have a great offer on their package gift vouchers, buy one and get a credit note for yourself to use during January. Now who doesn't like a little pampering in the New Year after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas has died down! There are lots of Christmas festivities going on in the area this month. The Hucclecote Community Centre have many events during December, from Christmas Carols on 12th December, followed by a Christmas party with a buffet, then a Children’s party on 20th December and a Live Music event on Christmas Eve - read more details on page 2. If you run a business in the area, then the likely hood is that you are already starting to think about the New Year and how to increase business in 2016. Perhaps we can help you - we are running an offer this month - where if you place an advert with us in our January editions then we will run it in February for FREE. So you can get your business in front of 1,000’s of homes for just a fraction of the cost. See our advert on page 19. The winner of this months Sudoku competition is, Linda Slade, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 24. Dave’s top tips Radiator Problems. If you are having problems with your heating system, here are a few things to look out for that could be the cause. 1: Top of radiator cold, bottom hot. This is usually a r esult of air in the r adiator that has risen to the top and is stopping any more hot water filling the radiator. It is cured by “bleeding” off the air from the top of the radiator by opening the bleed nipple and allowing the air to escape If your radiators need constant bleeding then too much air is entering the system and the problem is a bigger one requiring a central heating engineer to have a look. 2: Top of radiator hot, bottom cold. Rust and sludge has pr obably built up in the bottom of the radiator and this will displace any water leaving the bottom of the radiator cold. Proprietary sludge removers can be used to clean systems through. Theses are on sale at all plumbers’ merchants but read the instructions before use. 3: Downstairs radiators hot, upstairs cold. This gener ally means that the feed and expansion tank in your loft has run dry which can indicate a problem with the valve. This needs addressing quickly and a change of valve is usually in order. This is not a huge job and, as long as you have turned off the water, is well within the capabilities of a DIY enthusiast. 4: Upstairs radiators hot, downstairs cold. This possibly indicates a faulty centr al heating pump and this should be checked by an engineer. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION www.hucclecote.org.uk / Telephone 01452 616289 / E-mail hca@care4free.net / Reg. charity no. 301550 Have you visited us at the Community Centre in Hucclecote? You will find a very busy and thriving centre, with lots to do for almost all tastes. We are open to everyone – there is no need to become a member to take part in anything that happens in the Centre. For instance, Teapots Coffee Shop is open every weekday morning; the Hucclecote Social Club bar is also open to the public evenings and weekends; Hucclecote Playworld is a very popular soft play facility for the under 5s on Monday and Tuesday mornings, along with Nippers Parent & Toddler group on Thursday mornings. We do still have membership which helps us to be able to run and update the Centre. Members receive discounted charges for the events that we run, low-cost (and sometimes free) hire of the hall, plus discounts at the Chace Hotel's Spa and Leisure club. We run many one-off events – Family Fun afternoons, live music, coach trips, etc. – see our advert elsewhere in The Link. ‘Christmas
is coming!
It is now only a matter of weeks until we reach Christmas Day and the culmination of special events, frantic preparations and festive celebrations. This year the Hucclecote Churches will combine to take the 'Nativity On A Lorry' through local streets on December 10th & 11th and then a special outdoor Carol Service with friends from the Community Centre on December 12th. Look out for the lorry in your street. At St Philip & St James Church we will be involved with the local schools and nursery groups to put on several special events and they are always great fun. We will host a variety of Carol Services and other festive specials and these will all be on the Christmas leaflet going into letterboxes in early December and online at www.hucclecotechurch.org. Our four main events will be our Carols by Candlelight on Sunday 20th December at 6.30pm, Christmas Eve for Children & Families at 5pm, Christmas Eve Midnight Service at 11pm and our Christmas Day celebrations at 10am. You don't have to be a regular church attender to join us, everyone is welcome! Come and join us to celebrate Christmas. On behalf of the Church family I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous 2016. Revd. Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Hucclecote’

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD
The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30 pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee & biscuits, and most importantly, the chance to chat and socialise. Topics of our forthcoming speakers include "Garden Lore" by Pam Slater, and "Barnwood House Hospital" by Brian McBurnie to start the 2016 programme in January. Our most recent speaker was Fiona Warin, on "Land Girls". Fiona painted an entertaining picture of what life was like for women conscripted into the Women's Land Army during WWII, using quotes and anecdotes recorded in the BBC Living History Projects. It was a time when the country imported 70% of all foodstuffs, and had to increase domestic food production as part of the war effort. With the assistance of the Women's Land Army - who undertook roles in animal farming, crop growing, timber and as rat catchers! - the country doubled it's food production between 1939 - 45. No recognition was given to these ladies when the war ended, but more recently a Women's Land Army medal has been issued, and there is a Memorial to them at the National Arboretum. Reports were given of the recent Quiz and Photographic Competition, and the Ramblers Group, and details given of the trip to the St John's Players, the Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff, and the New Year's Lunch in January. Visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Just come along, or ring Linda on 617701 for more information.
Hucclecote Garden Club Although we are officially known as the Hucclecote Horticultural Society, I think Hucclecote 'Garden Club' is a much more appropriate title, as we have speakers covering quite a variety of topics, not just purely 'horticultural' issues. Over the past year we have had speakers talking about The History of Kew Gardens, Gardening for Bees, or you don't have to keep bees to be a Beekeeper, Ideas for Summer Hanging Baskets and Containers and in October, The Mysterious Forest - Spooky Stories! Not all purely horticultural topics, I think you will agree. 2016 will soon come around and we have a great programme arranged, kicking off on the 28th January with a speaker from Colesbourne Park talking about the famous Colesbourne Snowdrops, in February we have Mark Moir from Newent Plant Centre giving us some "Spring Inspiration" with plants from his Plant Centre, followed in March by our AGM and speaker from the RSPB. At the moment we are making plans for our 2016 annual Coach Trip, previously we have travelled to the RHS Gardens at Wisley, the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham and last year we had a great day out at Blenheim Palace and Gardens. We meet at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the fourth Thursday of each month, do come along for a great cup of coffee or tea, a brilliant Raffle, interesting and amusing speaker, all for ÂŁ2 - great value for money!! and pick up a few tips for your own garden for the New Year. For more info please ring Sue on 01452 543573 or Joy on 01452 553185. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News Very pleased to say that we are camping at Newquay as we had hoped to do as the owner of the site is not selling up. The Scouts Halloween event went very well even with the world cup being on, we had plenty of masks and costumes. Our congratulations to Alex Plant, Charlie Lovell and Ben Hathaway for gaining the Chief Scout Award which is the highest award in the Scout Section. The Explorer Scouts have started their Queen Scout and D of E Awards so hope to have some of them marching at Windsor Castle on St Georges Day next year, with Scouts from all over the country. With the winter nights all meetings are inside but we still do a wide range of activities. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information if you have anyone between 6 an 14 who may like to come along and see what we do. Terry
Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our meeting got off to a very good start with a glass of wine, cheese and biscuits then followed by homemade (of course) mince pies, (thank you Sarah) it was the only time there was silence in the room. We had our AGM meeting and this was followed by a DVD of the WI,s centenary celebrations which included all the local WI,s. We thank Barbara and Fred Brian who set up the projector so that everyone was able to enjoy it together. Next month on the lead up to Christmas we have a meal out booked and our meeting in December Is the Christmas party which we are looking forward to. We have speakers most months on various topics. We have meals out, theatre trips and friendly skittles. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more mation or just come along, we look forward to seeing you.
