Dave’s top tips Mixing concrete

Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water. Variations in the ratio of the ingredients produces a mix suitable for different jobs but here we will be instructing you on a general purpose mix suitable for most garden tasks and shallow foundations – not house foundations. Mix 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 4 parts of gravel. What you use to measure the parts depends on how much concrete you need – normally buckets are the best measure, one part being a level bucket full. Adding water is not a simple matter as the sand you are using might already be wet. So use trial and error – add some water and mix until the consistency is right. How do you know – well a shovel full will stay in a loose heap and not slop over the edges but the mix is soft enough for you to smooth and shape easily. What ever you are applying the concrete to should be wet as this helps the concrete bind to it. The mix dries and hardens – but if it the conditions are too hot the mixture will dry unevenly and crack. So if the concrete is in full sun on a hot day cover it with a sheet so as to slow down the drying. As the mix dries, it will harden. But the drying, or ‘curing’ should be gradual, otherwise cracking may occur. To prevent cracking, plastic is placed over the curing concrete to trap the water inside, ensuring gradual curing.” Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. From the outside Anna's sister, Elsa looks poised, regal and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear as she wrestles with a mighty secret-she was born with the power to create ice and snow. It's a beautiful ability, but also extremely dangerous. Haunted by the moment her magic nearly killed her younger sister Anna, Elsa has isolated herself, spending every waking minute trying to suppress her growing powers. Her mounting emotions trigger the magic, accidentally setting off an eternal winter that she can't stop. She fears she's becoming a monster and that no one, not even her sister, can help her.

And, where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south?

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.

Christmas....such a special time of year for so many of us, but for some it can also bring stress, financial difficulties and/or New Year Resolutions! It is very often a popular time for giving up the "evil weed"...yes, your beloved cigarettes that perhaps have carried you through many a stressful situation. And that often causes people to wonder how they will manage without that crutch. And do you dread it when your partner announces it's time to give up the cigarettes...sometimes for the third, fourth and maybe the fifth time, perhaps all in vain, often with all the moods etc., that go with giving up an addiction? A lot of people dread this part. Perhaps the start of a new year isn't always the best time to start, but is there ever a good time? Is there ever an easier time? But hesitate not! Help is at hand. If you have made the decision, you might find that a short course of Hypnotherapy can be extremely beneficial in learning how to become a non-smoker for evermore. There are quite a few different ways to achieve this, and these are always discussed with each client, so that together, much help and advice will be given to encourage the person to stick with their New Year's Resolution. A health questionnaire is the first part of this progress, and a CD is also offered to assist by "running alongside" the sessions. Each CD is designed and recorded for each individual's needs, by me. Top-up sessions and phone-call back-ups can all help the person to stick with their resolution to enable them to achieve becoming a healthy non -smoker for evermore. One final thing, do you know just how many chemicals and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) are in one cigarette? It makes for interesting reading online. Check it out....if you dare! If you would like further details, ring me on the number in my advert below. You can also read more at www.hypnohelp4u.co.uk Don't let the thought of giving up spoil your Christmas...As they say on Crimewatch..don't have nightmares. If you have any particular queries about Hypnotherapy and Counselling, do email or ring me, and I will answer next month in this column, anonymously of course.

Hearts & Hurricanes WI The WI is turning out to be very popular on Coopers Edge. We have had several new members join over the last few meetings, with the wine tasting in October proving very popular! November’s guest speaker was local ceramic artist Tara Davidson who helped us make porcelain ceramic jewellery. We had a great turn out with the ‘hands on’ meetings always proving popular. Check out her website http://www.tarajaneceramics.com/ for more information on Tara and the lovely items she creates. If you have ever considered joining the WI please come along to our next meeting on the 11th December. Our members are organising an ‘American supper’ where everyone will bring a dish of food. (Please email us or go to the Facebook page for more details) They will be decorating the room and there’ll be food and drink to get us into the Christmas spirit. This will be a great chance to come along and meet members and visitors and see if the WI is something you would enjoy. This is also the last month where the option will be available to spread your membership payments over three months. Membership for 2014 is £34.70. January’s meeting is an ‘informal crafting evening’ where you can bring your own craft work or come and help us with a group project. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at Coopers Edge School, entry is free for members and £3 for non-members. ‘Christmas starts with……?

When I was growing up, living near Lancaster, I used to look forward to early December and the special Christmas shopping nights in the city centre. A sparkling mixture of lights and sounds that started the Christmas season and gave us real excitement for what was to come. I can still see the food stalls, the Salvation Army band, the huge Christmas tree and even the crush of shoppers looking for gifts that didn’t spoil the evening. These days Christmas seems to start as soon as the supermarkets bring out the tinsel and mince pies in about March (slight exaggeration) but several friends I know have normally completed their present buying in early October. This year an ad campaign is being launched with the simple slogan. ‘Christmas starts with Christ’. The shopping, the gifts, the food, the travel, the trees and decoration are all good and well, but Christmas is all about Christ. According to research 51% see Jesus entirely irrelevant to their Christmas season yet at Christmas we celebrate his birthday, his life, his words, his ministry, his death and the precious link to that Easter morning. How can he figure is your celebrations this year?

Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Hucclecote’

Hucclecote Horticultural Society By the time you read this we will have had our final meeting of 2013: the regular meeting date for December clashes with Boxing Day and we were finding it difficult to get a speaker – and an audience for that matter! For October we had a brightly coloured slide show and talk from the two Sues from Stroud, covering the butterflies that can be found in our gardens here in Gloucester [if we are lucky]. Certainly their own gardens in Stroud are visited by many varieties that I have never seen in ours. I am going to open my eyes more next summer I think. We then rounded off 2013 with Tom Price talking to us about Orchids in November. A lot of our members are very keen orchid growers, and I am sure that this evening will have proved a most interesting one for them, as well as people like myself who have to keep our hands well away from any plant which is even remotely delicate. We will be kicking off 2014 with our own Jan Broadway telling us all about the exploits and successes of Francis Masson, whose plant hunting expeditions took him all over Southern Africa, from where we have ‘imported’ a good number of the plants we now take for granted. That meeting will be on Thursday 23rd January. If you are looking for a resolution for 2014, then why not join us for this or another evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge - and find out a bit about the different aspects of gardening. Garden, allotment, patio pots or indoors – we cover them all. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout Group

33

The Halloween evening went well with many costumes to judge, sing song and firework display with clearing up done just before the rain started. With the darker evenings and wet weather all units are holding their meetings inside although the cubs are camping at Cranham this weekend (16th Nov) but are sleeping indoors with activities outside if weather dry. The summer camp in Yorkshire has now been booked with over 30 Scouts who have already paid a deposit to come. In the New Year we will be sorting out all the activities we can do on site. With a full programme and swimming most days and the Scouts cooking on open fires in their patrols a week soon flies by. With Christmas nearly here all the units will have their own Christmas parties, with the Scout patrol leaders having a second party to themselves. Two weeks before Christmas is always sweet making time for the Scouts, with each patrol making sweets from fudge coconut ice and toffee and eating the lot at the end of the meeting then we send them home quick. Cubs and Scout units start back the same week as the schools with five Cubs coming up to Scouts. Any new members are welcome to join a very active Scout Group, Beavers 6 to 8 (put name down when 5) Cubs 8 to 10 and Scouts 10 to 14. Phone Terry for more details. 521664. If you have already contacted a leader, and when your son/daughter reaches right age and no contact made to you please come back to me.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Hucclecote Guild welcomed members and 4 visitors (hopefully some will become future members!), to our October meeting where Liz Godsell from ‘Godsell Cheese’ was going to give us a talk on cheese making and tips on tasting. Due to unforeseen circumstances Liz turned up later than expected, so had to cut short her talk about the making of cheese-but fortunately we were all able to taste a selection of the cheeses she had brought along with her! She has promised however to return at a later date to give us her full talk on cheese making, and we look forward to that, as she was very entertaining for the short time she was with us, ( and we’ll hopefully also then get a ‘second bite at the cheese’-which was very good!) By the time you read this we’ll have had a number of events, in November- a trip to the Everyman Theatre to see “ Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ; a coffee morning to raise funds for The Arthritis Trust, our charity for this year; the Christmas Shopping trip to Cardiff; November talk by Sue Trevaskis who will hopefully “Colour us Beautiful “ in time for The Christmas Festivities!; and be looking forward to our members Christmas Social evening on Thurs. 5th December, also wishing a Happy and Peaceful Christmas for everyone!.
