Dave’s top ps Freezing condensate pipe If you’re not used to hea ng terms, you might be wondering what a condensate pipe is! Put simply, it’s the small plas c tube that removes condensa on from your combina on boiler to an outside drain. During winter, it can freeze causing your central hea ng system to fail, as the condensate cannot drain away, this then causes the combina on boiler to stop working and usually displays an error message. To rec fy this you must locate the blockage and thaw the pipe using hot water. This can be quite a laborious process, but the ice should turn to water eventually and drain away. Obviously wherever possible, preven on is be%er than cure so try and lag the pipe to prevent it freezing or even re-route it so as it will not come into contact with the freezing condi ons. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top ps along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the inves ga ng for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rec fied so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

GAC REUNION PLANNED FOR NEW YEAR As 2015 approaches the Jet Age Museum, opened in 2013 to commemorate and celebrate the rich aviation history of Gloucestershire and in particular Gloster Aircraft Company are well on with plans to reunite families and friends who worked at the Huccelecote based Aircraft factory. Some 70 years ago next May, the Gloucester Citizen Victory in Europe day special edition told of the end of WW11 and the importance of the work carried out by thousands of men and women in the factories based at Hucclecote, Brockworth and shadow factories around the county. Writing under the heading "A magnficent record of fine service" the Citizen recorded "One factory alone-The Gloster Aircraft company-produced most of the planes which fought and won the Battle of Britain(HURRICANE) and earnt undying fame in the skies over George Cross island of Malta and unhappy Norway(GLADIATOR)".Later in the war ,1942 onwards, 3,300 Typhoons were also constructed at the Hucclecote factory just emphasisng the importance of local aircraft production to the war effort. The Jet Age Museum , based at Meteor Business Park, Cheltenham road East, Gloucester GL2 9QL has discovered many rare pictures and artefacts from this period and intends to display these in the museum next year. Of particular interest to ex GAC workers of any era (the Factory closed in the early 1960s having built the Meteor during the late 40s-50s , with the Javelin being the last aircraft constructed by the company), is a reunion event in April being arranged for workers and their families .During WW11, GAC employed over 10,000 workers with some 45 shadow factories, some based in the city centre in garages and bus station workshops.Post war many workers were based at Moreton Valence as well as Hucclecote, GAC eventually diversifying into non aviation products including amongst others , vending machines. Speaking of the reunion, organiser Trevor Davies said" We would be delighted to hear from anyone who worked for GAC in whatever era. Some 60 people have already registered their interest in attending such an event. We fully expect to be able to runite factory pals from days gone by.Anyone interested in attending the April re-union can either visit the museum to register or ring me on 01452 619793. It should be a very memorable event " continued Trevor" and all GAC workers and their are very welcome to attend"

Celebrate “I wish it could be Christmas every day” was the title of the 1973 hit song for Wizzard, a familiar tune that we all get to hear on radio, in supermarkets and shopping centres every year. I was reflecting on this song when I heard of the Wiltshire man who literally celebrates Christmas every day of the year, every year, year in, year out. Christmas is a great time to celebrate, be with family & friends, enjoy those once a year luxuries and relax. But what if we could celebrate Christmas every day? Imagine the joy of not working, of giving and receiving presents, of eating all that lovely food and see those in our lives that through the rest of the year we don’t see so much of. But would the novelty wear off? How many Crackers could you pull before you've heard all the jokes? How much Christmas pudding could one eat before needing to put a new larger belt on the present list? And when would you realise that the reason it’s great to meet up with some family and friends at Christmas is because you only meet up with them at Christmas? There is one side of Christmas that is ‘low fat’, is totally free and you won’t need to fight through layers of paper and tape to get to. The bible talks about ‘Emmanuel, God with us’, that’s God, the creator of the universe, stepping down to be born in a cattle shed just so that we can know Him and have a relationship with Him. Now surely that’s a gift worth celebrating every day so why not pop into church this Christmas and find out more, we’d love to see you. Steve Godsell, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote. Hucclecote Scouts

The Group Halloween bonfire sing song and firework display went well with good weather for the evening. Even though the start of half term week we had a lot more children and parents than usual which all goes to make an enjoyable evening. We had a good turn out for Remembrance Sunday and marched to the war memorial with other organisations. Numbers for next years Summer camp on the Gower are coming in well with many of the new Cubs coming. Dates are the first week of the summer holidays 18th to 25th July. An enjoyable evening was spent doing Go Karting and Lazer Tag, it is always a popular activity. In December we will be bag packing at local supermarkets, thanks to them for letting the Scouts earn money. Like many organisations we get we get no money or grants from anyone and the bag packing is are main money raising event. These days children are encouraged to take part in outdoor and indoor activities, when Baden Powell started Scouts 107 years ago he could haven had no idea what Scouting would be like today. Although we have kept up with modern ideas the basic of Scouting outdoors still remains with Scout camps with boys and girls split into patrols of six to rope off a kitchen area, make gadgets for all the utensils and cook on open fires. I am sure many of you have been in the Scouts or Guides and I hope remember the friends and good times you had. Phone Terry on 521664 for more information, Beavers 6 to 8, Cubs 8 to 10 and 6 months and Scouts follow on till 14, if you have children who may like to join.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society October saw a record audience sitting down to listen to Fiona Warin again, and she certainly did not disappoint with her talk about the land girls. 80,000 of them by the end of the war, with some of them serving on into the early 1950s. Thanks in large measure to them for all the extra acreage [millions of acres in fact] that was devoted to feeding the population at the time. Fiona is such an entertaining speaker that I am sure we will be welcoming her back again as soon as her diary allows. December sadly is a blank month for us – something called Christmas seems to push our meeting out this month every year: in 2014 we would actually have been meeting on Christmas Day, but the Community Centre is closed that day, so we have to wait until January for our next get together. January 22nd is the date then, when we have Gill Hazell coming up from Bristol to talk to us about ‘unusual bulbs’. Sounds good – we all know the daffs and the tulips, but it will be interesting to learn what else we should be able to grow. Garden centres here we come! In case you haven’t got them in yet, still time to get some broad beans and peas in for an early crop, as well as putting some sweet pea seeds in, keeping them in your greenhouse or cold frame. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – advertise call 01452 890242 I’m not!ToMore information from Chris on 610694.

Update from Hearts and Hurricanes WI

If you are new to the local area, or just fancy trying something different, then why not come along to one of our meetings? We are a very friendly and young group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. We've got some great things planned for our forthcoming meetings - our December meeting will be an informal bring-and-share social event, and for the New Year we've got Boudoir Photography, chocolate tasting, belly dancing, a bake off, and a vintage tea party to celebrate the centenary of the WI, among lots of other events. Our website has had a face-lift - check it out at www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. We also run other monthly clubs: craft club, book club and a dining club, as well as organising regular social events. Why not give it a go - we'd love to see you there!

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild 35 members and 6 visitors came along to the October meeting, when we were pleased to welcome back Susan Marshfield, whose talk this time was entitled, "Lasting Impressions". Susan is a very amusing speaker, and this time took as her theme the people, events and even smells which make a lasting impression on you, and remain evocative throughout your life. We were reminded of when "Washday Monday" took all day, and filled the house with the smell of soapsuds; perfumes from the past such as 4711 and An Evening in Paris; the smell of tar being laid on the roads, mothballs in granny's wardrobe, and carbolic soap! The various evacuees billetted with Susan's family, and the US Servicemen from a local base who lodged with them, made lasting impressions, as did the lack of bananas and oranges at that time. She also recalled an elderly lady who she helped with the funeral arrangements for her husband, and who insisted on a floral wreath in the form of a swan - because that was the pub where he spent many happy hours! Further details were given of the shopping trip to Cardiff in November; an evening at the St John's Players' November production of "Murdered to Death", and the Christmas Lunch in December. Hucclecote Townswomen's Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea and coffee, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information - or just come along!
