Dave’s top tips Frozen Condensate Pipe
Over the last few cold years I have had a number of calls from people who have had problems with their boiler breaking down. The culprit boilers tend to be the modern and now common condensing combination type boiler. This is the type that heats water on demand with no immersion tank or loft header tank. The problem has been due to the extreme cold weather we have had over the last few years causing the condensate pipe to freeze and causing the boiler to shut down. This affects both hot water and heating. The cure should it happen is usually to thaw the pipe with warm water untill the condensate within the pipe runs freely, then a quick press of the reset button upon restarting the boiler and all should be well. However prevention is better than cure, So wherever possible exposed condensate pipe should be treated in the same manner as exposed water pipe and be properly lagged to prevent the ice forming within the pipe. An even better solution is to relocate the pipework so as it runs inside the building and flows into an internal trap such as you would find under the sink. This then mixes the hot waste water from the sink with the cold condensate and is in much less danger of freezing. Things to bear in mind are to ensure the new pipework runs downhill with no air traps as this can in itself cause a boiler to shut down. Also the water should be expelled into a sewerage drain rather than a fresh rainwater drain. A little bit of thought now could save many a cold night witth no heating and a lot less agravation in the future. Regards
Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hearts and Hurricanes WI We are a young, informal and friendly WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the newly-opened Coopers Edge Community Centre (next door to Coopers Edge School). We've enjoyed a large increase in our membership over the last year, and now regularly see around 40 people attending our meetings. If you fancy joining us, feel free to come along to a meeting, which you can try for free before deciding whether our WI group is for you. To give us an idea of numbers, please email us first at heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk if you're thinking of coming along. We've got some great meetings lined up for the coming year, with a mix of the serious, such as talks on Hearing Dogs for deaf people and special care for premature and sick babies, and the more light-hearted, with trial sessions of Laughing Yoga and Bellydancing. We also have regular favourites such as our annual Bake Off and our summer Garden Party. In between the monthly main meetings we hold other regular clubs for WI members: book club, craft club, and a dining club, as well as regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips and weekends away. We always include time during our meetings for tea and homemade cake and a chance to chat with other members. It's a great way of meeting people and making friends if you are new to the area, or just want to improve your social life! You can find out more about us by visiting our website: www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com where you will find, amongst lots of other information, a list of the meetings we have planned for this year. We look forward to meeting you!

‘Back to school One of the most frequently asked questions as I meet young parents in the community, often when booking a wedding or baptism (christening), is 'what are the local schools like?' Having done it myself in previous years I know that the choice of a suitable school for your child is a major consideration. In Hucclecote and throughout Gloucester we are truly blessed to have some amazing local schools with incredibly devoted head teachers, teachers and governors. As a local church we regularly visit our local schools for assemblies or Open the Book sessions, to be part of RE lessons or as school governors. It is so rewarding to see the local schools growing and developing and it is a source for much rejoicing. Why not take a moment this month to say a prayer for your local schools and maybe to see if you can offer skills and talents to serve as a governor or in some other voluntary capacity. What about attending the next fundraiser or social event to show your support? Today I thank God for our local schools and the children who never cease to inspire and amaze. Rev'd Andrew Axon, St Philip & St James Church Hucclecote’
Hucclecote Garden Club Hucclecote Horticultural Society, to give it its official title, was formed in 2009 by a small group of enthusiastic gardeners, and has continued to grow and get involved in community activities in Hucclecote , whilst offering a platform for an interesting and varied array of speakers from our county. In May we join in with the Hucclecote Methodist Church Plant Bring and Buy Sale, a great opportunity for the budding amateur gardener to pick up at very reasonable prices, garden tools, furniture, pots and home grown plants. Later in the year we have a couple of tables of plants at the Annual Hucclecote Show, which takes place on the King George V Playing Fields, with funfair, stalls of every variety, and music throughout the day. By the time this edition of The Link appears we will have had our talk on the Colesbourne Snowdrops, which couldn't be more topical as the famous Snowdrop Weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th February, 12.45pm to 4.30pm, with homemade teas available its an event not to be missed. With the strangest combination of plants in flower at the moment - my neighbour has wild poppies still in flower (which normally flower in August/September) alongside daffodils in full flower, roses still in bloom from last Autumn, 'Spring Inspiration' the title of our February talk, should be an interesting mix of bulbs and early flowering shrubs, or maybe Mark Moir of Newent Plant Centre, will surprise us all with some unusual ideas to suit our ever changing climate. We are meeting soon to plan our Speakers for the remainder of 2016 into 2017, which we hope will be as 'inspirational' as our February talk. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the four Thursday of the month, 7.30pm For more information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185, or Sue on Gloucester 543573. He also visited various other groups in the Gloucester area gathering material for his book; he compiled all these stories together to form a new book.
