A bit about “The The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link Dear Neighbours, A belated Happy New Year to you all………... Welcome to the February edition of your Hucclecote Link. Christmas and all its festivities, now seem to be a distant memory and we are now ploughing ahead into the New Year. 2013 is going to be a celebratory year in ’The L-D’ (Link Directories) household, with both myself and my husband celebrating certain milestone birthdays, along with some very good friends of ours I feel a few parties on the horizon!! I’m due to be an Auntie again this year , and I’m Matron of honour for one of my best friends at her wedding taking place later in the year - think its time for the diet and fitness to start before the celebrations begin!! If New Year is a time that you also start to think about diet and fitness for the year ahead - and yes I know we all start with good intentions, but I plan on sticking to it this year!! The Hucclecote Link can help point you in the right direction. For fitness we have hotels in the local area offering special offers at their gyms - see Spirit Health club and Hallmark Hotel both on page 16. If going to the gym isn’t up your street - we have a personal trainer on page 27 who can come to you. If you are looking to loose weight after the Christmas excess, you should have received a leaflet with this directory with information on local Rosemary Conley classes. For those romantics who will be celebrating Valentines day this month, please remember that we have some great local beauticians who always have great offers that every girl would love, see page 14 and 25 for more info, and if there happen to be any proposals on the day that lead to wedding dress shopping, see Mystia on page 15, they provide beautiful bridal and prom gowns. Please remember, as always we can be found on our Face book page; www.facebook.com/TheLinkDirectories or on twitter; www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken we would love to connect with you.

Dave’s top tips Reusing a paint brush Cleaning and restoring paint brushes can be a real chore but life can be put back into those expensive brushes you thought you would have to throw away. To get maximum value from brush restoring when using water based paints you can follow the instructions below.. Clean the brushes immediately after use is the best option if possible, but if you are continually using the same brushes during the day then remove as much surplus paint as possible and wrap the brush in cling film. This will even be good if the brushes are left overnight by stopping the air getting to the bristles it will allow them to stay workable for quite some time without drying out. To clean the brushes after use, get as much paint out as possible by brushing it on newspaper, wiping with a rag and pushing the brush hard against the edge of the paint pot and squeezing out as much paint as possible. You can even lay the brush flat on the newspaper and push down the length of the bristles with a paint scraper. Rinse any water based paints under a running tap. Slightly warm water is best and work your fingers through the bristles as you flush. A drop of fairy liquid will not hurt and the water should be crystal clear before you finish. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Flowers, Tubs and Borders After flowering dig up and divide over crowed clumps of Snowdrops and replant When winter flowering heathers have gone over prune back the dead flower heads to maintain compact plants Prune winter Jasmine by pruning back stems that have flowered Firm back into the ground any alpine/rockery plants that have been lifted by the frosts Prune back hard any clematis which flower from July onwards Prune back woody Mahonia stems to keep the plants bushy and compact
Fruit and Vegetables Plant Shallot sets ( if the weather stays cold then start them off in pots of compost in a cold frame) Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers, sow broad Beans, Carrots and Parsnips under Cloches Cut back autumn fruiting raspberries to the ground and all others to the bud above the last wire. Complete the winter pruning of apples and pears before the end of the month and before the sap starts to rise in the stems.
Greenhouse Sow sweet pea seeds in a cold greenhouse or frame Sow Peas, Onions, Leeks and Cabbage in a propagator and Parsley in seed trays Carefully clean the glass and frames with a greenhouse disinfectant getting ready for the new season Buy your grow bags early even if you use them outside and put them in the greenhouse to ‘warm up’ this will give you a head start later in the spring when you plant with tomatoes etc.. Check out our web site for more information and a list of the services we offer www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. Remember there are principles to successful gardening but no formulas. Please mention The Hucclecote-Link when responding to adverts

Friday 1st February
February 2013 Release’s CIRQUE DE SOLEIL
A young woman in a small Mid-Western town goes to a traveling carnival one evening, where she is urged by a silent clown to visit the carnival's circus and see The Aerialist, the show's star attraction. She is entranced by The Aerialist, but during his act he misses a catch and falls to the ground. She rushes to help him, but then the ground beneath them gives way and they fall through into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil. Separated, they travel through the different tent worlds trying to find each other, interacting with the strange and wonderful performers and performances of Cirque du Soleil.
Friday 8th February WRECK-IT RALPH Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before its "Game Over" for the entire arcade?
HITCHCOCK In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock (Sir Anthony Hopkins) and his wife, Alma (Helen Mirren), are at the top of their creative game as filmmakers amid disquieting insinuations about it being time to retire. To recapture his youth's artistic daring, Alfred decides his next film will adapt the lurid horror novel, Psycho, over everyone's misgivings. Unfortunately, as Alfred self-finances and labors on this film, Alma finally loses patience with his roving eye and controlling habits with his actresses. When an ambitious friend lures her to collaborate on a work of their own, the resulting marital tension colors Alfred's work even as the novel's inspiration haunts his dreams.
Friday 15th February A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD Iconoclastic, take-no-prisoners cop John McClane (Bruce Willis), for the first time, finds himself on foreign soil after traveling to Moscow to help his wayward son Jack (Jai Courtney) - unaware that Jack is really a highly-trained CIA operative out to stop a nuclear weapons heist. With the Russian underworld in pursuit, and battling a countdown to war, the two McClanes discover that their opposing methods make them unstoppable heroes.
Friday 22nd February HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma To advertise 01452 617040 Arterton) are a formidable team of bounty call hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society All being well, by the time you read this the weather will be a little more favourable to us gardeners, and we will be able to take advantage of the lengthening daylight hours. What an amount of rain we have had! I have been pulling carrots and parsnips out of the ground without the need for a fork or spade, the soil has been so soggy. I don’t want a drought in 2013, but a little less rain would be a welcome change, or this summer’s crop will be rice. Our 28th February meeting will have us listening to Arthur Pedrick, who will be taking us through the secrets of successful propagation. For those of you who watch Gardeners’ World, you will know that Carol Klein in particular is a great fan of ‘getting your money’s worth’ by getting more plants from the ones you already have, by propagating in different ways. This should be a very good evening – I will have my notebook in hand. March 28th is a Members’ evening, and the date of our AGM, so this is a good opportunity for you to sign up as a new member, and to support the Society by volunteering to help the committee if you feel so inclined. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.
Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Hucclecote T G members Social evening took place on Thursday 2nd Dec. at the Community Centre, and certainly could be said to have ‘gone with a swing’! The evening was comprised of a ‘Bring and Share Supper ‘ and entertainment supplied by the Ukelele Group, and in a very short time everyone had joined in singing along to the music, and a great evening was enjoyed by all, who then went home happily looking forward to the ‘Festive season’ ahead. As usual, Christmas and New Year festivities sped by very quickly, by the time you read this we shall have enjoyed our Annual Dinner at the end of January so completing all our celebrations! The February meeting of Hucclecote T G will be on Thursday February 21st,at 7-30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre and should be an excellent meeting entitled “No 7 Cosmetics” by ‘Boots The Chemist’ ! All members and visitors are very welcome. The Sales Table will be: Books. To advertise call 01452 617040

HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP
All units held their Christmas parties the week before Christmas with plenty of games and food. The next main event is the District run Cotswold marathon up to a 24 mile event starting at 5.00pm on the first Saturday in February. With entries from all over the county mostly, it is a stiff challenge. With over 20 entries again this year from our group we hope to retain some of the trophies we won last year. On Sunday 24th February we celebrate Founders day at our HQ, with the whole group meeting at 2.30 for camp fire songs and items put on by all units. The afternoon ends with a buffet with little food left after all the boys and girls have finished with it. Plans for May Day, Summer and Father and sons/daughters camps for this year are now being made. The Scouts extra activities which we do each Summer are being booked, they include, kayaking, climbing, go karting and lazer tag. Anyone who is interested in joining the group (age 6 to 16) please phone Terry on 521664 for more information.
St Philip and St James Church
'Say one for me! A few years ago I was walking through Gloucester to the Cathedral and a man on a bicycle drew up alongside me and said ‘say one for me Vicar’. At first I thought he was joking but soon it became clear he was going through a tough time and simply wanted some prayer and some answer from God to the real problems he faced. Each weekday at 9.30am we gather in the church to say prayers for our church family, for the community in Hucclecote and for the city of Gloucester. If you would ever like us to ‘say one for you’ please do not hesitate to contact the Church office on: 01452 372177 or stpandstj@btconnect.com.
