Dave’s top tips Cutting in technique
Cutting in when painting along trim that's not protected by masking tape takes a steady hand. And once you get the knack for it, you'll never want to fuss with taping trim again. Sure, cutting in can be hard for some but you can learn to do it effectively. Use a tapered paintbrush. The angled bristles uniformly unload the paint as you cut in. Dip the brush into the paint, and then tap (don't wipe) each side against your container to knock off the excess. Brush the paint on the wall, about 1/2 in. from the trim. Then make a second pass, cutting in all the way to the trim. Avoid “pushing” the paint with your bristles or you'll leave a ridge where you're cutting in. Apply just enough pressure to let the bristle ends glide next to the trim. To help keep the brush steady, move your entire arm as you paint instead of moving your arm only from the elbow down. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.
This month I have selected the following letter I received shortly after New Year's Eve from Miss S from Abbeydale.
"Dear Rachael, I have had to have the in-laws to stay over Christmas. Much as I love them most of the time, being thrown together in an enforced situation, my partner and I have been verbally fighting ever since. We seem to have different values over how we deal with each other's relatives, and the presents we give them. I come from a poorer background than he does and so our Christmases were always thought through carefully and all our presents to each other had a lot of consideration gone into, although they weren't as expensive as his might be. He will spend, spend, spend to the point of putting our mortgage in jeopardy. I can't hack this, but how do I get through to him that it's the thought that counts, not the value, and how do I cope in our future life together?" This situation needs very careful talking-through, wouldn't you agree, Miss S.? I imagine your in-laws have no idea that you struggle with Christmas, never mind whether they are there or not. Would it be at all possible to speak to his Mum by yourself and explain gently your situation and how you worry about the mortgage and other finances, and what would she think you should do? Perhaps making her understand that unnecessary expenses at such an awkward time of year put your relationship in difficulties. Maybe you can also try to put a fiver a week away from now on, also. Could that help? As a mother-in-law myself, I would rather know and make my presents more suitable to my family's needs, and therefore ease any stress they were going through. You are always welcome to pick up that phone and speak to me about making an appointment for yourself or with your partner if needs be, just to give yourself confidence in dealing with such an emotive subject as finances. And this goes for any of you out there who feels under pressure for whatever reason. For further details, please ring 01452 614115 *******************************************************

Mr Peabody and Sherman (3D) Mr. Peabody is a business titan, inventor, scientist, gourmand, two-time Olympic edallist and genius…who also happens to be a dog. Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. But when Sherman breaks the rules of time travel, our two heroes find themselves in a race to repair history and save the future, while Mr. Peabody may face his biggest challenge yet – being a parent.
Labor Day Depressed single mom Adele (Kate Winslet) and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.
Dallas Buyers Club The story of Texas electrician Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) and his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986, and his search for alternative treatments that helped established a way in which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies. Why policies are place, but who can sympathize with Ron, Rayon and others – all her patients, directly or indirectly – in their situation.

The Lego Movie (3D) An ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together.
Cuban Fury 1987: A 13 year old natural born dancer with fire in his heels and snakes in his hips is working himself up to explode all over the UK Junior Salsa Championships. But then: a freakish bullying incident on the mean streets of London robs him of his confidence, and our young hero finds his life diverted down a very different path. So it is that 22 years later, an adult Bruce Garrett (Nick Frost) finds himself out-of-shape and unloved – trapped in a downward spiral of self-pity, repression and Nando’s take-outs. Only Julia (Rashida Jones), his smart, funny, gorgeous new American boss, gives him reason to live. Unknown to Bruce however, Julia has issues all of her own. Luckily for him, she also has a secret passion. Then there’s Drew (Chris O’Dowd), his alpha male colleague and horny king-monkey of the office. With Drew making no secret of his desire to get (his words) “all up inside Julia”, Bruce is forced into action. And thus, Bruce is once again brought face-to-face with the darkest and most powerful of his inner demons. Somehow, someway, and with a lot of hand-holding from loyal sister Sam (Olivia Colman) Bruce must learn how to unshackle his dancing beast, regain his long lost fury and claim the love of his life…and he’s going to do it all On The Dance Floor…
The Monuments Men Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements. From director George Clooney, the film stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett.

‘‘No regrets!
As a local church minister I frequently meet people when they are grieving and preparing for the funeral of a loved one. One of the hardest issues they face, and often seek advice, is the issue of regrets. ‘I wish I had told Dad I love him’, ‘if only I had reconciled with my brother’, ‘I wish we had spent more time together’. I guess there will be very few people that make it through life without wishing they could change something from the past or make a difference to a situation today. There is a little verse in the Bible that frequently leaps out at me when I hear it read ‘Today, if only you would hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…’(Psalm 95:7-8). Maybe today is the day to pick up the telephone, to write a letter, to book some family time, to arrange a holiday, to say sorry, to say ‘I love you’. Maybe February 2014 is the month of no regrets! Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road.’
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Well, last time I wrote we were having dry spell. I am not sure what happened after that, but the gardens are now well and truly soaked, and I suspect for soaked read ‘water logged’ for quite a lot of people. It does make it easier to get both vegetables and weeds out of the ground though, so all these rain clouds do have a silver lining. Have you bought your seed potatoes yet? It is not time to put them in yet, but it is time to start chitting them. I use old egg boxes for this: they keep them upright, and a side benefit is that they are easy to count, so I know how many rows and how much room they will take up. At our meeting on 27th of February we have Jon Mason from Highfield Garden Centre who will be talking us through, and I imagine demonstrating as well, ‘pruning’. If like me you have in the past pruned plants to death by mistake, [even though some gardeners will tell you this is just not possible] this is going to be a good chance to learn how to do it correctly. March 27th is our AGM, short and sweet I imagine as most of these things are, but followed this year by a couple of our own members – Peter and Jenny Wilcox – describing their experience of opening up a garden for the National Gardens Scheme, which raises £millions for charity. They put a lot of effort into making their garden one which is well worth a visit. So why not join us one evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge - and find out a bit more about many different aspects of gardening. Garden, allotment, patio pots or indoor plants – we cover them all. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242
