Daves Top Tips How to stop the smell and gurgling from your sink or basin.
A very popular question is " How can I stop my basin/shower gurgling when I pull the plug out?" To solve this problem it’s a good idea to know what causes the problem. The water leaves the basin and begins its run into the trap underneath. This trap has water in it, which stops smells coming back up through the pipes into the room through the plughole. When the water from the basin passes through the trap, it begins its run to the main waste pipe and out into the external manholes and main sewers. Some of this journey is made through (inside the building) vertical pipes and sometimes through pipes that have rather more than the 1 in 40 slope, which is recommended for foul water drainage. This encourages the water to run very quickly and sometimes this causes a vacuum behind the flow. This vacuum sucks at the water that remains in the trap. Most often this "sucking" causes the water in the trap to bubble and gurgle - hence the gurgling noise. Sometimes the water is sucked out of the trap completely and this is when foul gasses can get back into the room. Fitting an air inlet valve is easy. The pipe from the trap can be cut (as near to the trap as possible) and a Tee piece inserted. The air inlet valve is then fixed to the top of a vertical length of pipe from the Tee piece. When the valve is fitted the water runs away as before but instead of the vacuum sucking water from the trap it just sucks air which is admitted through the valves. This allows the water to run away noiselessly from basin, bath and shower hence little or no disturbance to the water in the trap and no foul smells coming back through the plughole. Hucclecote Townswomen Guild 46 members came to the November meeting of the TWG, to hear Graham Johnson speak about being "In Search of Santa". It was a seasonal evening, with tales of bundling up against the snow in sub-zero temperatures, some 140km North of the Arctic Circle near the Russian border, where there is less than two hours of "grey light" before darkness falls again. Santa lives in Lapland, in a snowy forest, where people who go to visit him are able to take part in snowy activities - meeting the reindeer, sleigh rides, husky sled rides and skidoos, before meeting the great man himself. The year's events finish with a shopping trip to Cardiff; a Christmas lunch at Hatherley Manor, and the Christmas Social Evening. The first meeting of 2015 will be on 15 January, with Phil Moss talking about Beatrix Potter and the Tailor of Gloucester.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Well, January brought my favourite potato weekend and I stocked up with four varieties this year. Mindful of the scourge of potato blight, wherever possible I will have picked varieties noted for blight resistance. I have found that Sarpo suits me well: it produces a good crop, with no sign of blight, even when other types have succumbed in allotments near me. So fingers crossed. It’s not too late to get yours still, remembering to chit before planting. On 26th February we have David Swinson from the Westonbirt Volunteers entertaining us as he tells us of the ‘Wonders of Westonbirt’. For anyone who read the Citizen last year there were certainly some stunning Autumn shots of Westonbirt on display. An evening not to miss. March 26th is our AGM, with an as yet mystery speaker coming along once the formal proceedings are over. We will be electing a new committee at this meeting, with perhaps a new writer for your monthly Link reports shortly after that happens! Did you get your sweet peas in before Christmas? Mine are a couple of inches tall now, so they should give me a good early showing. I do plant more later on, to continue the display into the late summer. The broad beans are up as well, though with no sign at all of the peas I planted I have given up hope of them, and will really miss that lovely early crop. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – I’m not!
