A bit about

The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

3

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the February edition of your Hucclecote Link. As I am writing this there is news of ‘All plan B restrictions’ being lifted by the time you receive this months directory and even the possibility of all restrictions being lifted by March! So if you welcome this news of getting back to normal and would like to start to get back out there and socialise again check out some events that are happening at the Hucclecote Community Centre over the next few months and maybe get some dates in your diary. With us well into the New Year now, this can be a time when we start to think about getting fit and loosing a few of those Christmas pounds ready for what will hopefully soon be warmer days - so if you fancy trying something new, Spirit Health Club on page 14 are offering a free trial, or take a look at Emmas Yoga and Zumba with Wanda both on page 20. New year can mean a time for new beginnings - Barnwood Park School have a vacancy for a Care Assistant & Student Support, if you are looking for a new job, see page 18 for more details. Also new for 2022 - we have introduced the Quedgeley Link and are now distributing to 5500 homes around this area, making our total distribution of the Link Directories 22,000 homes around Gloucester. So if your customers live in one of our distribution areas, please do get in touch to find out how we can get you in front of them and take advantage of our February 3 for 2 offer. Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Mixing concrete

Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water. Variations in the ratio of the ingredients produces a mix suitable for different jobs but here we will be instructing you on a general purpose mix suitable for most garden tasks and shallow foundations – not house foundations. Mix 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 4 parts of gravel. What you use to measure the parts depends on how much concrete you need – normally buckets are the best measure, one part being a level bucket full. Adding water is not a simple matter as the sand you are using might already be wet. So use trial and error – add some water and mix until the consistency is right. How do you know – well a shovel full will stay in a loose heap and not slop over the edges but the mix is soft enough for you to smooth and shape easily. What ever you are applying the concrete to should be wet as this helps the concrete bind to it. The mix dries and hardens – but if it the conditions are too hot the mixture will dry unevenly and crack. So if the concrete is in full sun on a hot day cover it with a sheet so as to slow down the drying. As the mix dries, it will harden. But the drying, or ‘curing’ should be gradual, otherwise cracking may occur. To prevent cracking, plastic is placed over the curing concrete to trap the water inside, ensuring gradual curing.” Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. The monthly evening meetings have been very welcome, after so many months of lockdowns and restrictions on meeting socially, and the programme of speakers lined up for the coming months offer something for everyone. There is always time for tea, coffee and a chat, as well as a raffle and the bring-and-buy sales table. We are a friendly group of local ladies, and guests and visitors are always very welcome - phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night!

Hucclecote Garden Club February is traditionally the month of the Snowdrop, a welcome Spring addition to our gardens and woods. For the best flowering results new Snowdrops should be planted 'in the green' that is whilst the foliage is still green. Clumps of Snowdrops can be divided with very good results too and a great way to increase the Snowdrops in your garden without having to buy new bulbs. On the 24th February we welcome Kevin Alviti from Colwall near Malvern. Kevin and his family try to live as self-sufficiently as possible on their smallholding at the foot of the Malverns and will be talking on 'Unusual Fruit and Veg'. Kevin is proud of the fact that his family try to produce as much as they can from their garden with his children being involved in everything that is done. We welcome all to our Club, whether they be gardeners or not, there is always something to learn and pick up gardening tips from our regular Members. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. For more information please contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI We have just had our first meeting of 2022. We had a social evening with refreshments and a game of bingo which was funny and enjoyable, and lots of time to catch up with everyone after a stressful last year, not knowing whether we were coming or going. We still had to abide by Covid restrictions, we hope that this year will be the last and things return to normal! We have quite a few speakers that come to our meetings and afterwards we have refreshments, a raffle and also time to chat and socialise. We are planning to have a few outings this year which at the moment are in the pipeline, and hopefully coffee mornings, skittles and meals out. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except August). Visitors and guests are very welcome, so if you would like to come please phone Betty on the bottom of the article for more information or just come along on the day.
