A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Happy New Year! Welcome to the January edition of your Hucclecote Link. This edition will probably be delivered to you during all the festivities between Christmas and New Year so I do hope you are all having a magical time with your loved ones! Alternatively you may be counting down the days until it’s back to school - but let’s hope not! So it’s (soon to be) 2016, and I wonder what this year will bring? Are you someone who starts each year with a list of New Years Resolutions, but by the end of January you realise you’ve not stuck to any of them?!! Well if getting fit or loosing weight is amongst your New Year Resolutions, maybe the Hucclecote Link can help you out, we have a few local businesses advertising their fitness regimes with us; from Sprit Health Club on the front cover waiving their joining fee, Females4Fitness on page 14 offering a 50% joining fee discount, or taking up classes of Zumba with Jane, details of her classes are on page 15, or BodyFlair who are also on page 14 and have an offer on their Body Wrap which guarantees to help you loose inches - this maybe just the thing after the over indulgence from Christmas! Many of our local businesses are also holding Sales during January, so if you are looking to upate the furnishings in your home, now may be a great time to do it….there’s Barbaras Blinds on page 19, Interior Needs on page 21, Glevum Heating on page 24 are offering a £100 Marks and Spencer voucher on new systems installed before February and Als Windows are offering a 25% discount on gutter cleaning - see more on pages 16, 17. Then if by the end of the month the kids are climbing the walls again - why not get them out to a Disney Dance Party at the Hucclecote Community Centre, details for this and other events being held here at the beginning of the year are on the opposite page, page 2. If you run a business in the area, then the likely hood is that you are already starting to think about the New Year and how to increase business in 2016. Perhaps we can help you - we are running an offer this month - where if you place a full or half page colour advert with us in our February editions then we give you a £20 discount. So you can get your business in front of 1,000’s of homes for just a fraction of the cost. But be quick as this is only available for the first 16 customers - you must quote 2016. Give me a ring or drop me an email. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month and may I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2016 Sarah.

Dave’s top tips How to cure an air lock If no water, or a spluttering supply, comes out of the hot tap when its opened, the likely cause is an air lock. If you have an automatic washing machine, and have both the hot and cold supplies connected, an effective remedy can be implemented quite easily. The cold water to at least one of the downstairs taps will be connected directly to the mains (this is generally the kitchen sink tap). The washing machine will be connected to this run of cold pipe as it needs mains pressure to work properly. The mains pressure of the cold water is much greater than that of the hot water and we can use this greater pressure to push any air locks back to the hot water storage tank. Disconnect the cold water hose from the back of the washing machine (Turn the valve off first). Disconnect the hot water hose from the valve on the hot water pipe. (Turn this valve off first also). Now connect the free end of the cold hose, to the free, hot valve. Turn on the hot water valve and then the cold water valve. This will now allow the greater pressure of the cold water to push any air back up the hot water pipe. Leave both valves open for approximately 30 seconds and then close, cold first. Now check the flow from the hot tap at the kitchen sink and the air should have been dispelled. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

'It's the most wonderful time of the year!' No not a hangover statement from Christmas celebrations or a December article reissued, the start of a new year or season brings a fresh start and new beginning. All around the country there will be resolutions and promises made (and broken) with vows of eating and drinking less, giving up certain habits or taking greater exercise. Most of us finish the year doing most of the things we did at the start of the year and enjoying all the usual habits. But.......there are those that succeed and those that make big life changes. So what about you? In the Methodist Church Wesley's Covenant Prayer is prayed at the start of the year and it is a great start to a new season. The prayer encourages us to put ourselves into God's hands again and to live and serve wherever we are placed. It is a bold and adventurous prayer but a wonderful reminder that God is sovereign. As we start the new year maybe you would like to offer a prayer for the year, for those you know and love and for peace in our world. Happy New Year - it really is the most wonderful time of the year! Andrew Axon - St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote
Hucclecote Garden Club Hucclecote Garden Club kicks off 2016 on the 28th January with a very interesting speaker from Colesbourne Park, giving us an insight into the preparation and display of the famous Colesbourne Snowdrops, which are at their very best in February. The Park has been open to the public for many years and has been a real feature of the 'must see' horticultural sights in Gloucestershire. 'Spring Inspiration' is the title of our February talk, featuring plant combination ideas for the Spring garden as well as suggestions for Spring pots. Mark Moir of Newent Plant Centre will be our speaker and will be bringing along plant samples for us to see. Plans for our 2016 Coach Trip are underway and this year we are hoping to visit Hestercombe House and Gardens near Taunton. Hestercombe House and Gardens is part of the Historic Houses Association. There are many formal gardens which feature terraces, rills and an orangery, and are great examples of the Lutyens/Jekyll partnership design, together with 40 acres of Georgian Pleasure Gardens and the Great Cascade. The trip is planned for June 2016 and we hope to welcome many of our Members again this year. We are also lucky to have Dr. Jan Broadway, a local speaker and historian coming along, she will be giving a talk on the National Trust Gardens of Gloucestershire, which I am sure will be of interest to keen gardeners as well as those who enjoy a lovely day out in our beautiful County. Do come along to our talks, I am sure you will find something that interests you. We meet on the fourth Thursday each month in the Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7.30pm. More details from either Joy on 01452 553185 or Sue on 01452 543573.

The site and transport for next years summer camp at Newquay has now been booked and with 26 coming and a few more still thinking about it. With a trip to Lands End Experience a days activities and all the good beaches around we should have a great time. The Scouts have been climbing at the climbing centre where with qualified instructors and ropes they climbed the 25 foot climbing wall. The Scouts Christmas Party went well with plenty of games and sweets to be won. With plenty of food afterwards 20 Scouts stayed on for more games and a sleepover. Looking forward towards nest year we will be doing the usual extra activities climbing, laser tag, ski instruction, kayaking and windsurfing plus all the usual camps. Pleased to add another Scout to our Chief Scout Gold Award our congratulations to James the new year we will have another 6 working towards it. There are rumours around that the Group have been offered the chance to buy the land the H.Q stands on (we own the building). Given the chance we would like to but it will mean a big money raising effort which we hope you will support if it goes ahead. All boys and girls welcome to come along and try Scouting in Beavers (6 to 8) Cubs (8 to 10) Scouts (10 to 14) and Explorers (14 to 18). You may have joined in the past and left but if you are now in the next age group you would find a great difference in the games and activities of the next section. Phone Terry on 521664 for more information. Happy New Year

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Our speakers in the New Year include Brian McBurnie on Barnwood House Hospital, and Deanna Cardoza on Roman Medicine. We also have our New Year's Lunch at the Cheltenham Regency Hotel to look forward to at the end of January. Our final speaker of 2015 was Pam Slater, on Christmas Garden Lore. While we all think of holly, ivy and decorated trees as being uniquely linked to Christmas, the origins of bringing greenery into the house, and decorating doors, go back to pre-Christian times, when the practise was linked to the Winter Solstice. Holly and ivy are both mentioned in Greek and Roman folklore; Ivy is a symbol of marriage and friendship, and prevents drunken-ness; Holly was used as a treatment of chilblains, and Mistletoe is a symbol of freedom - and fertility! Visitors are always very welcome - why not make it your New Year's Resolution to come along? Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more details.
