A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Happy New Year! Welcome to the January edition of your Hucclecote Link. I hope that when you receive this you will have all had, or are in the midst of having a fun and festive break. January is a time of the year when we all reflect on the year gone by and what the New Year may bring….. We definitely had a full on 2013 in our house, full of fun and celebrations, so I’m thinking 2014 may be slightly quieter! January is also a time for those New Years resolutions, and if fitness or loosing weight was up there as one of your resolutions, then let the Hucclecote Link help you. With The Chase Hotel offering one months membership free see the front cover, and Spirit Health Club offering a 5 day free trial - more details on page 16, and Rosemary Conley classes starting up at Gloucester Academy soon, see page 17, there are lots of ways to help you stick to your resolution locally. February will also be upon us before we know it, and so if you are thinking of taking that special someone somewhere romantic, look no further than Hatton Court, they have some special offers for Valentines, see page 2 for further details. Looking further ahead into the year, perhaps you are thinking about where to go on your holidays. We have a great little villa in Portugal available for hire, read more about it on page 22. Remember our Sudoku competition on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the local Cineworld. Congratulations to Harriet Bozzard the winner of this months Cineworld tickets. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top tips Blocking water stains If you have ever had a leak come through a painted ceiling or an old wall has been damp in the past, you will know that it does not matter how many coats of emulsion, or how many layers of wallpaper you put on, the stain will still come through. The only way to stop this happening is to cover the stain with a stain blocker or an oil based paint first. You can then emulsion or paper as normal. You can easily make your own stain blocker by mixing some oil based undercoat and gloss together and then painting this over the stain first. If a ceiling has had leak damage in the past and the leak has been fixed and the ceiling may even have been plastered over you will find that those water stains will keep coming through until and oil based coat is applied first. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.

Mr D. of Barnwood emailed me the following question:- 'I am not good at dealing with stress in work, my relationships, and every aspect of my life. I am worn out. Should I make an appointment with you?' Well, Mr D. Stress is one of the many problems that I am called upon to help people with, and as you know right now, it is a very horrible thing to have in your life. Many people who suffer with stress, find it very difficult to be able to "switch off" and relax. It feels as if your brain is on 'red alert', and consequently you are using up powerful endocrines or hormones, which either leave you washed out and depressed, or hard-wired and existing on adrenaline which is potentially dangerous to your body. Let me explain more. Our ancestors developed the "fight or flight" reflex. When they faced danger, the hormones of adrenalin and cortisol would have been released to make the heart pump faster giving an instant energy-boost to the body and brain. Muscles would tense, and cholesterol would be released into the blood stream to make their blood clot more easily in cases of wounds and injuries. Those responses saved lives back then, but today they can trigger heart attacks, strokes, stomach ulcers, rashes and even Alzheimers. But why? Well, basically, liken it to putting rocket-fuel into a scooter! You would soon burn the engine out, so it is important nowadays to find a way to take the stress out of a situation and in effect, disperse the hormones into a way that will not set up inflammatory responses in the body. Stress is no respector of class, race or creed, wealth or poverty. It strikes across the board, and did you realise that over 6 million working days are lost in the UK alone through stress? And stress goes alongside any problem, so if there is a relationship problem, or work deadlines for example, then there will be stress as well. But fear not, you are right, Mr D, an appointment with me is the sensible thing to do, and immediately together, we would find a way to put the pleasure back into living with your own Hypnotherapy, and help you to combat stress in a calm and gentle way. ‘Just

an ordinary girl!

Almost a decade ago I was leading a seemingly ordinary school assembly at a school I used to visit. As normal we sang a few songs and then began to share a Bible story with them. That season we were looking at people Jesus met and on this occasion it was one of the accounts of wonderful physical healing. We talked about the story and the various characters; we talked about doctors and nurses, hospitals and carers. We sang a closing song and then I led us in a short prayer of thanksgiving and praying particularly for people the children knew who were unwell. I thought that was the end of the assembly. As I opened my eyes from that prayer I noticed a hand rose in the air and a young girl beckoning my attention. Rather surprised to get a question at the end of the assembly I asked her what she wanted. Over the next five minutes or so she shared with her school friends how she herself had been very sick and that she had been made well. She shared that she and her mum believed in God and that her local church had been praying for her as she was in hospital. She finished by saying ‘I think God still heals people today, I am proof’. That day there was not a dry eye in the staff room as we talked about it afterwards and the visiting OFSTED inspector was moved by the experience. I pray that in 2014 we may all know the healing power of God. He still heals today! Reverend Andrew Axon - St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote’

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Happy New Year to you all, and let us hope that this one is a good one for gardeners. As I write we are experiencing a fairly long spell with little rain. It’s nice, so I have been able to get out in the garden or on the allotment most days recently. Broad beans and sweet peas are in and showing. I wonder though how long before someone tells us that a dry winter means low levels in the reservoirs, and then that dreaded hosepipe ban. Keep your water butts full! We will be starting 2014 with our own Jan Broadway telling us all about the exploits and successes of Francis Masson, whose plant hunting expeditions took him all over Southern Africa, from where we have ‘imported’ a good number of the plants we now take for granted. That meeting will be on Thursday 23rd January. Then on 27th of February we have Jon Mason from Highfield Garden Centre who will be talking us through, and I imagine demonstrating as well, ‘Pruning’. If like me you have in the past pruned plants to death by mistake, this is a good chance to learn how to do it correctly. And if you are looking for a resolution for 2014, then why not join us for this or another evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge - and find out a bit more about the different aspects of gardening. Garden, allotment, patio pots or indoors – we cover them all. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild A steady buzz of conversation and anticipation, heralded the speaker at the November meeting of Hucclecote Townswomens Guild when Mrs Sue Trevaskis of “Colour Me Beautiful” came to give us advice on choosing colours to wear, especially above the waist close to the face, which would complement and enhance each individual’s hair colour, eye colour, & skin tone. It was amazing to see how Sue used slightly different shades of each colour, on four members with differing hair & eye colour , skin tones-‘warm or cool,’ to change their ‘look’ quite dramatically! A most enlightening evening, which may result in a few colourful additions to our Christmas stockings!! Thursday 5th December brought HTG Christmas Social evening when entertainment was to have been provided by “ The Melodians”- probably Britain’s oldest ‘ Boy Band’ with ages from 78yrs-88yrs!,but unfortunately due to illness they had to regroup and become ‘The Ad Hoc Singers’, who nevertheless entertained us royally with group singing, jokes, solo singing and monologue. The Ad Hocs then joined us for supper, provided by members, which was enjoyed by all-Christmas wishes were exchanged, so ending another year of friendship, support and enjoyment for Hucclecote Townswomens Guild. The first meeting of the New Year for HTG members and visitors will be on Thursday 16th January at 7-30 pm, at Hucclecote Community Centre, and is about the work of “ Maggies Cancer Caring Centre”.
