Dave’s top tips Removing spilt hardened grout
Grout, either wall or floor tile, dries very quickly and can be very frustrating. Don't despair! Use warm water and wipe it over the surface of the wall tiles with a sponge. Then using some fine wire wool rub gently over the grout, which will begin to dissolve and rub off at the same time. Wipe over with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Then polish with a dry cloth. The same method will apply to floor, or quarry tiles but warm water will probably not be enough to dissolve the cement-based adhesives used for these tiles. A patio, or brick cleaner will do the trick but you will need to wear rubber gloves and eye protection, as these cleaners are acid based. Also try a tiny drop in an out of the way corner, lest the cleaner be too strong and etch the tiles. Follow rinsing instructions for the product carefully. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Coffee When looking back, I am always amazed at how life has changed. I can remember a me when coffee was just a powder you added water to, unless you were really posh and had a percolator. Now if you go into one of the many coffee establishments, which I find myself doing probably far too frequently, there is a bewildering array of varie es, styles and sizes to choose from. Probably the most expensive coffee is called Kopi Luwak, a rare Sumatran coffee which has a fairly unique produc on process in that the coffee cherries are the favourite food for the Palm Civet. This small cat-like animal apparently eats these cherries, nature takes it's course and the coffee beans are collected, hopefully thoroughly cleaned and processed into coffee which sells are around £20 for 50 grams (1.7 oz). Now this does pose a ques on or two; firstly, why would someone pay so much for coffee which has journeyed through the inner workings of a Civet and more importantly at what point did someone think in the first place, "Where is that lovely fresh coffee aroma coming from, it must from that pile of Civet ....". At this me of year many of us examine our lives and resolve to make some changes to the areas we don't like. Then in February, once we've given up on our well meaning resolu ons we con nue in the same muddled un l the next New Year. With Christmas just behind us we have been reminded that just as Jesus, God's Son was born in a dirty, messy manger, there is no part of our lives too messy for God to turn up and make something special. I pray that this New Year will be a happy one for you and all those you love. To advertise call 01452 890242 Steve Godsell, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild 46 members came to the November meeting of the TWG, to hear Graham Johnson speak about being "In Search of Santa". It was a seasonal evening, with tales of bundling up against the snow in sub-zero temperatures, some 140km North of the Arctic Circle near the Russian border, where there is less than two hours of "grey light" before darkness falls again. Santa lives in Lapland, in a snowy forest, where people who go to visit him are able to take part in snowy activities - meeting the reindeer, sleigh rides, husky sled rides and skidoos, before meeting the great man himself. The year's events finish with a shopping trip to Cardiff; a Christmas lunch at Hatherley Manor, and the Christmas Social Evening. The first meeting of 2015 will be on 15 January, with Phil Moss talking about Beatrix Potter and the Tailor of Gloucester.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Happy New Year. Last year was a mixed one for many gardeners, with some things doing very well, and some things not so well. Plus Autumn really seeming to upset the rhythm of some plants. As I write, on 5th December, we have a cowslip, some lobelia and a whole lot of penstemons in full flower in the garden – mixed up or what? At our 22nd January meeting we will be listening to Gill Hazell from Bristol, whose subject is ‘unusual bulbs’. I am not sure what she will come up with, though I doubt it will be what one of my colleagues said to me - ‘those that come into flower’! On 26th February we have David Swinson from the Westonbirt Volunteers entertaining us as he tells us of the ‘Wonders of Westonbirt’. For anyone who reads the Citizen there have certainly been some stunning Autumn shots of Westonbirt in there in recent weeks. It sounds as though this is an evening not to miss. Did you get your sweet peas in before Christmas? Mine are now about an inch tall in the cold frame, so should give me a good early showing. I do plant more later to continue the display into the late summer too. Broad beans are up as well, though no sign at all of the peas – I suspect the ground was just too damp for them this time. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – I’m not!
