Dave’s top tips Water saving dual flush cisterns

Regardless of all the rain that may have fallen in the last year, many will still be paying a hefty price for water. If you’re on a water meter here is a quick tip to save pounds being flushed down the toilet. And if you’re NOT on a water meter then check your bill. You may find that they charge you a percentage of your rateable value. Check this valuation date and I bet it is based on when your property was valued at its peak in the boom, Property prices have come down since then but I bet your rateable value hasn’t for your bill. So why not fit a dual flush water syphon to your toilet. This is fairly easily installed in a few hours according to your type of cistern. It gives you the option for a full flush when required or just a partial flush that can save between two or six litres per flush. Add that up over the days and weeks and it soon mounts up to a considerable water saving. Maybe even consider a water meter if you feel you may be better off. All new properties are now automatically fitted with a meter as standard but many older properties could well benefit. Other options such as a water butt could also give great savings especially as now we are in the gardening and growing season. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Gardening Tips for July from Garden Delight.. Flowers, Tubs and Borders Dead head bedding plants on a regular basis to encourage continual flowering Pick sweet pea flowers on a regular basis leaving them will mean they go to seed and you will not have as many new flowers • Cut back Lupins and Delphiniums that have flowered, if you feed them they may give you a second flush of flowers • Continue to water and feed summer tubs containers and baskets and arrange holiday cover if you are going away Dead head roses as the flowers go over this will encourage a second flush of flowers, you can now start to feed and treat with a combined pest and disease treatment to keep the plants healthy thought the summer.

• •

Lawns Water if its dry and there is no hosepipe ban, it’s a good time to liquid feed the lawn if its looking like it needs a fillip, use a high nitrogen liquid feed. You can also ‘spot’ weed those weeds that your early weed and feed fertilizers missed, but be sure you only use a weed killer suitable for use on lawns! Keep the edges trimmed, doing this regularly will keep the shape of your borders and keep your lawn looking neat and tidy.

Fruit and Vegetables Time to harvest early potatoes; check when the flowers are fully open by removing some of the soil if they are about the size of an egg they are ready to harvest. • Water onions if it’s dry to help the bulbs swell up and make good size, keep the weeds down around them to avoid competition. Regularly water and feed tomatoes plants with a high potash tomato food, do not allow them to become water logged. Irregular watering will produce blossom end rot and cause the fruit to split.

It’s been another tough year so far.. With the season starting very late and the weather being very inconsistent one day rain one day sun. Under these conditions it’s much harder to keep and eye on things watering wise, don’t rely on showers to water your tubs check each individually just to be on the safe side. Also the side effect of high temperatures and lots of rain mean you generally gets lots of growth on shrubs regular trimming can avoid these getting out of hand. If we get another wet summer as forecast then tubs and baskets will need extra feeding and nutrients tend to wash through with some much water falling. Check out our web site.. www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. Remember there are principles to successful gardening but no formulas.

July 2013 Release’s Wednesday 3rd July THE INTERNSHIP Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world. Trying to prove they are not obsolete, they defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brilliant college students. But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation's most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of reinvention.

NOW YOU SEE ME Four magicians each answer a mysterious summons to an obscure address with secrets inside. A year later, they are the Four Horseman, big time stage illusionists who climax their sold out Las Vegas show with a bank apparently robbed for real. This puts agents Dylan Rhodes of the FBI and Alma Vargas of Interpol on the case to find out how they did it. However, this mystery proves difficult to solve even with the insights of the professional illusion exposer, Thaddeus Bradley. What follows is a bizarre investigation where nothing is what it seems with illusions, dark secrets and hidden agendas galore as all involved are reminded of a great truth in this puzzle: the closer you look, the less you see.

Foodbank It seems to be an almost daily occurrence that a Foodbank is opened somewhere in the UK. It is quite staggering to see the level of poverty in our communities and quite mind-blowing to some that such need arises on our doorstep. In the three years I have lived in Hucclecote new Foodbanks have appeared right across Gloucestershire and I wonder how many people are struggling financially and going without regular meals here in our own parish? Every time we pray the Lord's Prayer we ask God to give us 'our daily bread' and that is a good petition and prayer. I wonder if that same God sometimes turns the tables on those of us with plenty and calls us to be part of the solution to provide for those who have little. When you next do your shopping why not add some extra items that can be given to the local Foodbank? When you next review your finances and your charitable giving could you give something away to a charity that would benefit others? Food donations for Gloucester Foodbank can be delivered direct or can be taken to St Philip & St James Church, Larkhay Road. Further details of our friends at Gloucester Foodbank can be found at www.gloucester.foodbank.org.uk/ Revd Andrew Axon, St. Philip & St. James Church, Larkhay Road, Hucclecote Please mention when responding to adverts www.hucclecotechurch.org Tel. 01452 372177'

Hucclecote Scout Group The Pioneer bridge at the Brownies and Guides day at Dinglewell went very well and children were going over the bridge all the afternoon. On the half term week when some Scouts were away we made Ballistic missile throwers, (same as armies hurled stones to break down castle walls) we used water balloons instead of rocks, several miss fired and throwers got wet. The celebration for the Queens Coronation went well with the fine weather, it took the form of small stalls all round the field where Scouts could play games of chance or compete. Winner gained a token which could be exchanged for marshmallow to toast on the Bar B Q. The evening ended with several tables full of food which soon vanished. The evening on Painswick Beacon went well with storming the castle, tail tag and many other active games. If you have any children 6 to 8 for Beavers, 8 to 10 for Cubs and 10 to 13 for Scouts please phone 521664 for more details. In September quite a few move up to the next section so we will have a few spaces for new Beavers.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society By the time you read this we will have been on our trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens – at the moment I am just hoping for good weather, though with the range of glasshouses that there are there even a bit of rain should not be a problem for us. We will also be calling at Webbs of Wychbold on the return journey – I have been warned that I need to take my credit card with me for that. Our July meeting is on Thursday 25th and is one which is set to test our knowledge - or lack of it in my case – when Rene Geissler is going to test our horticultural credentials with a quiz. As someone who only knows one Latin name for plants [the one for snowdrops, which is an unlikely question at this time of year], this promises to be something of a challenge. Woe betide anyone unlucky enough to be on the same team as myself! Our August meeting, on Thursday 22nd is our annual show – the improvement in the weather should mean that we again have a good variety of items to display. Nature does not take long to catch up I find. Once again Robert Champion will be our expert judge, and once again I will be taking notes so that I can do better again next year. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 617040

The group runs every Tuesday, 10:30 am to 12:00 at Salvation Army Hall, Gloucester and all parents are welcome you do not have to be an NCT member to join our Bumps and Babies group. Set up by parent charity NCT, Bumps and Babies groups provide relaxed and informal gettogethers, in community venues with enough room for buggies, babies and a close circle of parents. Coming to this group gives you a reason to get out of the house and socialise with people in your local area who can understand what you’re going through. We’re open to everybody and are always looking for new mums and dads to join.” The branch offers a range of services and activities for local parents including Antenatal Classes in Gloucester, Quedgeley and Churchdown. Hucclecote Townswomen Guild The Speaker at the May meeting of Hucclecote T G , was Mr Jim Tickner, who told us about fulfilling his lifelong ambition, of “Crewing on a Tall Ship”, ten years ago at the age of 72, when he responded to an advert, for 12 voyage crew to join the Australian crew on the ship called the “Eye of the Wind”. This ship, had been found in Sweden, was a complete wreck, so had been purchased for a very small sum! They cleaned up the engine, and sailed to Britain up the Humber Estuary, where they were greeted by Police, Customs and Immigration Officials, as it had become dark and they had no ‘running lights’ on the ship!, but were unable to get suitable materials for repairs at Grimsby, so had to go to Faversham in Kentwhere it took them 3 ½ years to rebuild the ship, using mahogany wood salvaged from a Bank- pine trees cut to form the masts, and wooden planks which had been a dance floor in a previous life, elsewhere in the ship. They then set sail for Australia with a mixed (male and female) crew one lady having left her husband and children behind-but not to work her passage, just for the trip! Jim soon settled in to working his passage, his first job being to fix the generator and then to learn the other skills needed to keep the vessel ‘shipshape’, and sailing –and to enjoy his unforgettable dream trip to Australia.! This was a very ‘topical’ subject as we had the Tall Ships Festival in Gloucester Docks to look forward to at the end of May! The July Meeting of Hucclecote T G will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7-30 pm, on Thursday 18th of July, when the speaker will be Annie McKie, talking about “My Accidental Career” All members and visitors are very Please mention when responding to adverts welcome to attend
