Dave’s top tips Cutting pipes squarely Here’s a nice and quick top tip for you this month to help with cutting plastic pipe. If you need to install some plastic drainage for new basins, sinks or maybe toilet pipes or gutters, the ends of the pipes need to be cut nice and square so as to allow for a proper fit/seal, which is not always as easy as it seems. A easy way to give you a square line to cut to is to wrap a piece of paper around the pipe and line up the edge. Tape it and it will give you a square edge to cut to. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

******************************************************* This week I was called out to see a lady who for the purpose of this article I will call Mary, although that is not her real name. Mary was suffering extreme panic attacks which are the most frightening things to experience and as I arrived she was in the middle of one. Her partner was as white as the proverbial sheet and said "Thank God you're here. You've got to help us!" So no pressure then! When I was taken upstairs to her, I found her shaking and crying. Her skin was alternating between being hot and sweaty, and cold and shivery. She was hyperventilating, and was in extreme distress. Kneeling on the floor by the bed with her head in her hands, it was very obvious that she was in a very bad way. I knelt down beside her and gave her a paper-bag to breathe into, which is the easiest way to bring the hyperventilation back to normal, and I showed her how to cover her mouth and nose with the bag, and soon her breathing was back to normal. She will now always carry one with her. All the while I talked calmly to her and assured her she was not alone and I would get her through this. As she slowly came through the attack, and started to feel safe again, and a little more relaxed, I explained a bit more about these awful panic attacks, that the first one usually turns up out of the blue with absolutely no warning, and most people think they are having a heart attack and are dying. Very frightening but the one thing that people should be aware of, is that despite feeling they are about to collapse and die, no-one has ever died from a panic attack itself. These awful attacks will eventually just disappear and never happen again, but while they are returning, possibly frequently to the person, they are extremely debilitating and can cause someone to become frightened of leaving the house. Mary had experienced her first one whilst driving on a motorway and understandably she had been frightened of driving again. Her world had shrunk to being tied to her home and she had given up work because of the fear of these infernal panic attacks. I am returning to see her today, and I will show her ways to combat these attacks, starting with small plans and tactics to over-ride the symptoms, as soon as they are about to begin. I will follow these tactics up with some hypnotherapy to instill in her a few ways to banish them forever. When she is feeling more confident about leaving the house, then she will come to me where I usually see my clients/patients, here at 33 Green Lane, Hucclecote, Glos: GL3 3QU., but for now I will continue to go to her to build her confidence in dealing with these attacks until they do disappear. If you also suffer with these panic attacks, ring me on the number below, and together we will find ways to beat them and put the pleasure back into life.

Hucclecote Scout News The main event coming is the Summer Camp in Yorkshire, we have camped there before and it has plenty of extra activities on site which we will be doing. Cooking on open fires in patrols of six, everyone has a chance to do some cooking, with swimming every day,all we need is good weather. The Guide and Brownie show at Dinglewell school was a great success with children going over the pioneer bridge all the afternoon. Details of the Father and Sons / Daughters camp in September at Cranham are out with many replies already in, after 36 years it is still as popular as ever. All the dads with their children cook in patrols and the camp is run as a Scout camp even to see who has had a wash (all in good fun). All units are back te week the school holidays finish, please phone Terry on 521664 if you have children interested in joining the Group 6 to 14 year olds.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Sadly we were unable to visit the Savill Garden as we just not able to rustle up the numbers we needed to make the trip viable. Next year perhaps. Highnam Court though was a great success with a full complement of members and friends enjoying gardens, tour and cakes. On Thursday July 24th we have a local topic, ‘The History of Barnwood House’ courtesy of Brian McBernie. This should be a fascinating evening, with no plenty of reminiscences from members who remember the house in its heyday as a hospital. Now no longer, except for the grounds that form the arboretum. This is another evening strongly recommended for visitors. August 28th sees the Society’s answer to Chelsea, when we have our flower and produce show. Members only may exhibit, but as with all meetings, visitors are welcome. I managed to win a couple of certificates last year, so I will be hoping to repeat that success. My very misshaped carrot came along just too late to win the prize for the most suggestive bit of veg. My potatoes are now in flower, the runner beans are climbing well, and we are enjoying plenty of the broad beans and peas which were planted before Christmas. Is it just me whose raspberries are early this year? Are there any snails at all that don’t live in my garden? Why not join us one evening and find out more about us. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. Date for your Diary
MAISEMORE FETE 25th August 2014 Our traditional afternoon with stalls, games and family fun. From 2.00pm Everyone Welcome! Gloucester FoodBank The food bank movement has received a lot of publicity in the national media lately. Some is positive, some is, at best, ill informed. So may I take this opportunity to set the record straight. The FoodBank movement started in Salisbury in 2000 and became the model for food banks affiliated to the Trussell Trust charity. Gloucester was one of the first to adopt this model, opening in 2005. About 450 food banks are affiliated, however, some are not and have their own operating rules. Surprisingly providing food parcels is not the primary purpose of the FoodBank. Providing food is just to meet their short-term requirements, while our main purpose is to try to ensure that our clients get the long-term support that they need. This process is called ‘signposting’ and we work closely with other agencies to achieve this. All our clients are referred to us by agencies, often not the one best suited for providing the help needed. Should someone ‘drop in’ we will refer them to an agency, but will provide sufficient food to last until they can get back. Demand for the FoodBank has increased over the years, from 2005 to 2013 we fed, on average, 2200 people a year but in 2014 it was 4750 and rising sharply. It is not possible to know if this is due just to increased hardship or weather we are reaching more groups and communities. If the latter, are there still groups and communities that we are not serving and still need to reach? Finally many thanks to all who support the Gloucester FoodBank, by donating food, money or time. Phil Rodford - Director, Gloucester FoodBank.
