A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the July edition of your Hucclecote Link. This month sees the start of the School Summer holidays and the count down for a lot of us to our Summer holiday. A time when we can take a break from the day to day and spend some quality family time together. Now whether you are going away or not, we all like to look our best at this time of year, and as we all know the sun in this country can be very intermittent - so why not treat yourself to a fake body tan for that Summer look - local beauty salon ‘Body Flair’ have a great offer for you and a friend - more details are on the front cover. How many of us also like to try to loose those few pounds before our holidays? Well it’s not too late, and to help you along why not join ‘Spirit Health Club’ at Barnwoods Holiday Inn Hotel. It’s offering a free Club Trial and no membership fee if you join this month. More details about Spirit Health Club and what the Holiday Inn can offer is on page 23. We are proud to say that this month sees our sister directory the Tuffley Link celebrate 3 years of publication. So to celebrate this we are offering new businesses a birthday offer of ‘Buy 3 months advertising in July and get 3 months Free’ - this can for a total of 6 months in one directory or 2 months but in all 3 directories (so a total of 6 adverts placed). See our advert on page 22 or email me for more details. When I spoke to one of our customers this month about seeing if they are happy to continue with their advertising in our directories - their response was…”Thanks for the reminder. We would most definitely like to renew for an other 6 months on all 3 links. We have found a great response from the Tuffley Link and wished we did it sooner!!!!!” The winner of this months Sudoku competition is Emily Gammon, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month and enjoy your holiday if you are going away this month... Sarah. Dave’s top tips White marks on brickwork.

Efflorescence is one type of white deposit found on masonry. It is formed by water, within the construction material, reacting with the natural salts contained within them and the mortar. These salts dissolve in the water and are carried to, and deposited on the surface, by the natural evaporation that occurs by air coming into contact with the surface of the wall or floor. Under normal circumstances, white, fluffy efflorescent salt occurs in relatively new buildings because the brickwork was not protected during construction and has become wet. This water will find its way out, through evaporation, and the salts can be brushed off and should not re-occur. However, if a lead flashing is damaged, or joints are missing and water is allowed to continuously enter the construction material, efflorescence will continue to form. In this situation the cause must be found and eradicated. There is a salt neutraliser treatment for efflorescence, which can be used after the cause has been eliminated, but this will only be successful if; No more water is passing through the wall. It can be applied to bare plaster, render, stone or brick, as it will not pass through paint. The other causes of white patches worth checking are a water leak – gutter or downpipe leaks, cistern overflow running, mains pipe weeping. Penetrating damp – e.g. via a blocked cavity or poor pointing, free Lime – the result of mortar or concrete curing, or from some clays used in brick making. The most effective treatment for efflorescence and free lime staining on external surfaces is time. The natural weathering of the surface, if maintained, will remove it. For a build up of deposits on a wall, a good scrub with a dry, stiff brush will remove the worst, but make sure you follow it with a soft brush to move the salts away from the wall entirely. They will stay in the pores of the brickwork and dissolve again when it is wet. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

to be in with a chance of winning 2 cinema tickets What's it worth? In 2010, a Picasso painting was sold for $106.5 million beating the previous record by over $2 million, then in 2009 someone paid $12 million for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa; these are some of the most expensive items sold at auction. Now I love watching television programs like Antiques Roadshow for two reasons that I am sure many others watch. Firstly, the undiscovered masterpiece which the unsuspecting member of the public has brought, wrapped up in newspaper and carried casually in a shopping bag which is then valued at a 'jaw-dropping' price leaving the poor owner stunned and also now very concerned how they are going to get the said item home again in one piece. The second and possibly more compelling reason to watch is the person who has a suspicion that they have in their possession a very rare and valuable object, who is then told it is not worth a lot because when they have tried to mend it with super glue or have stuck the lid down with tape, it was rendered worthless. We all have things in our lives which we value, whether a possession, someone who is dear to us or maybe it is a moment of time dedicated to a particular activity. These things may be worth very little to someone else but because of an attachment, a memory of a loved one or a passion for a pastime, these things are priceless to us. In an interview, television host Oprah Winfrey said that the one thing she would save from her home should disaster strike would be a photo album of her dogs; perhaps rescuing the dogs first would be a better solution. With so much value put on things or experiences, how do we value ourselves? Are we worth what we have in the bank, or what others feel we have achieved? Is who we are or what we have done the true value of our life? I am reminded of two things written in the Bible. Firstly that if God cares enough to clothe that plants in the field with the splendour of their flowers, how much more must he be concerned about us? And that love, I believe was demonstrated when he willingly went to unthinkable lengths to make it possible to have a relationship with Him. So my prayer is that maybe we will see ourselves not just through the eyes of those around us but through the eyes of God and realise how much He thinks we are worth. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD

The most recent speakers at our Guild were Eugene and Margaret Schellenberg, who founded the Ifakara Bakery Project in Tanzania. Having retired from working with industrial food preparation equipment, and teaching, Eugene and Margaret were visiting one of their sons who was living and working in Tanzania. They were made very welcome by the local comunity, and were asked if it were possible for them to help obtain a bread oven for the community to buy, so they could bake and sell their own "daily bread". This they did, and from very small beginnings, have seen how the Ifakara Bakery now supplies freshly-baked bread not only to local people, but to the childrens' hospital, the orphanage and the leprosy centre. Eugene was an enthralling speaker, and very entertaining. Details were given of forthcoming events - the Ramblers' Group, a trip to the Everyman Theatre, a coffee morning, a coach trip to the Bristol Blue Glass Factory, and the annual Quiz and Skittles competitions. Tickets are now on sale for the Fashion Show on Thursday 20 August, priced at £6.00. This promises to be a fantastic evening, with refreshments and a raffle, as well as the opportunity to buy clothes at a discounted price. Please phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more details, or to buy your tickets. The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 3rd Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm. There is always a speaker, refreshments and the chance to chat and socialise. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information, or just come along - you would be made very welcome.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society We had a really informative talk for our May meeting, when we learned all about the need to maintain and increase the number of bees in our gardens. We now each have a list of plants that bees like – many of them just the normal flowers we have in our gardens. One on the list though is dandelions – I suspect not many of them will be encouraging them into our gardens. On July 23rd we are going to hear a lot more about allotment gardening. Dave Cropp will be entertaining us as he talks about ‘his allotted time’ – the time he spends down at the allotment. Growing vegetables and flowers as well as nattering and drinking tea I hope. My own allotment has been troubled by badgers recently, so as they are a protected species, I am hoping for a few tips on how they and I might satisfactorily co-exist. 27th August will be our in-house annual flower and produce show. [Visitors are welcome to come along but not enter]. This year one of our new members has kindly donated some Russian tomato plants, so we are all now trying to grow the largest tomato in the show. He grew one weighing 620 grams last year – it will be interesting to see if anyone can match that. There is a prize on offer for the one which ways most. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on the 4th Thursday of the month, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, or to be an expert gardener – I’m definitely not! More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242

Plans for Summer camp on the Gower are now with 33 on camp all we want is the sunshine to make a good camp full of activities. Scout meeting continue outside with a special evening to celebrate the battle of Waterloo 200 years ago. With eight Scouts going up into the Explorer unit (next age range) we are looking forward to the five who will start with us in September. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have boys or girls interested in joining the Group, age 6 to 14 years old.
