Dave’s top tips White marks on brickwork. Efflorescence is one type of white deposit found on masonry. It is formed by water, within the construction material, reacting with the natural salts contained within them and the mortar. These salts dissolve in the water and are carried to, and deposited on the surface, by the natural evaporation that occurs by air coming into contact with the surface of the wall or floor. Under normal circumstances, white, fluffy efflorescent salt occurs in relatively new buildings because the brickwork was not protected during construction and has become wet. This water will find its way out, through evaporation, and the salts can be brushed off and should not re-occur. However, if a lead flashing is damaged, or joints are missing and water is allowed to continuously enter the construction material, efflorescence will continue to form. In this situation the cause must be found and eradicated. There is a salt neutraliser treatment for efflorescence, which can be used after the cause has been eliminated, but this will only be successful if; No more water is passing through the wall. It can be applied to bare plaster, render, stone or brick, as it will not pass through paint. The other causes of white patches worth checking are a water leak – gutter or downpipe leaks, cistern overflow running, mains pipe weeping. Penetrating damp – e.g. via a blocked cavity or poor pointing, free Lime – the result of mortar or concrete curing, or from some clays used in brick making. The most effective treatment for efflorescence and free lime staining on external surfaces is time. The natural weathering of the surface, if maintained, will remove it. For a build up of deposits on a wall, a good scrub with a dry, stiff brush will remove the worst, but make sure you follow it with a soft brush to move the salts away from the wall entirely. They will stay in the pores of the brickwork and dissolve again when it is wet. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Top chefs and a feast of family fun at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, July 22-24, 2016

Three of our most famous TV chefs will be helping to cook up a fabulous feast of fun, food and drink and live entertainment at Gloucester Quays Food Festival from July 22-24. TV’s popular chef Tom Kerridge, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and Reggae Reggae Sauce creator Levi Roots will all be demonstrating their fantastic skills at what promises to be the biggest and most successful food festival yet. On Friday, July 22, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain will be demonstrating some of the delicious recipes from her book as well as the enthusiasm, wit and warmth that won the hearts of TV viewers as she meets her many fans. Nadiya, who has since appeared on numerous TV shows, will soon be publishing her first cookbook, Nadiya’s Kitchen. On Saturday, July 23, TV chef Tom Kerridge will return to his home city of Gloucester to share the skills that have made him a household name and wow the crowds at Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Tom said: “Having grown up in Gloucester and with strong family ties in the area, I can’t wait to return to the city. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, it should be a fantastic weekend.” With his warmth and keen sense of humour, Tom who is the chef patron of the twoMichelin starred Hand and Flowers pub plus another restaurant, The Coach, both in Marlow, has had a hugely successful TV career. With shows such as BBC 2’s Proper Pub Food and his latest TV programme, Bake Off Crème De La Crème, it seems that Tom and his culinary genius and words of wisdom are never far from our screens. On Sunday, July 24 it will be the turn of Levi Roots to entertain the visitors to Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Levi soared to fame when he appeared on TV’s Dragon’s Den with his now famous Reggae Reggae Sauce. He went on to open his own Caribbean restaurant, launch a successful musical career, become a motivational speaker and even publish a business book. Nadiya Hussain, Tom Kerridge and Levi Roots will all be signing their books and meeting and greeting fans at 2.45pm inside Gloucester Quays Outlet on the day that they each appear at the Food Festival. Gloucester Quays Centre Manager Matt Bird said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming TV chefs Tom Kerridge, Nadiya Hussain and Levi Roots to the Food Festival this year and I’m sure their live cooking demonstrations and the passion they have for creating the finest food are going to thrill our visitors. “Tickets for the cookery demonstrations are limited so we always encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment. Entry to the rest of the Food Festival is free and it really will be a fantastic event for all the family to enjoy with a host of attractions, some of the finest foods, drink and gifts plus special event offers from many of our retailers.” Now in its sixth year, Gloucester Quays Food Festival, which attracted a record 148,000 visitors in 2015, is now established as the biggest event of its type in the South West. More than 120 stalls will offer everything from mouth-watering artisan pies, succulent farm sausages and lovingly brewed real ales to crafts and jewellery. All the celebrity chef demos and shows will take place in the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Theatre at the heart of Gloucester Quays Food Festival in Mariner’s Square.

Hucclecote Scout News The climbing centre activity went well with a session on the high wall then climbing along another wall with hand and foot holds. The water activities at Croft Farm also kept everyone occupied with Kayaking in the morning and wind surfing in the afternoon. With an evening on Painswick Beacon and our Midsummer Madness evening (when all the games revolve around water ending with a water fight.) Cubs due up in September are being invited to come along and see what Scouts are like. Then we have our summer camp near Newquay in the first week of the school holidays. Details of the Fathers/Mums camp at Cranham are now out when Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers all camp at Cranham with their mums or dads. This is the 36th camp we have held and with over 80 on it is still very popular. Please send forms back on time if you want a place. All units start back the week the schools start in September, with older Beavers going into Cubs, older Cubs to Scouts and older Scouts to Explorers. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you would like more information about our group.

Hucclecote Garden Club Members of the Garden Club enjoyed a great day out last Friday at Hestercombe House and Gardens. This was our annual trip and did not disappoint. We had a stop en route at Sanders Garden World at Brent Knoll (now part of the Wyevale chain) to have a coffee and look around, before heading on down to the outskirts of Taunton. We were in very safe hands as our lady coach driver told us she had previously driven tanks whilst in the Army, and the lanes of Somerset presented no challenges. Finally we found Hestercombe House amongst the meandering lanes and leafy trees. The landscape garden was opened in April 1997, for the first time in 125 years and was created by the wonderfully named Coplestone Warre Bampfylde in the 1750's. There was plenty to explore in the formal gardens, the beautiful Orangery, the Charcoal Burner's Camp, the Watermill and the fantastic Great Cascade which could be found after quite a climb around the perimeter of the site. We did give the champagne afternoon tea at ÂŁ25 a head a miss, although it did look interesting! Later in June we will be part of the Hucclecote Community Day to be held on the King George V Playing Field. Along with many other stalls Hucclecote Garden Club will have a table with plenty of plants to buy, from perennials, annuals, vegetables, as well as a wealth of gardening knowledge to pass on to first-time gardeners seeking advice. We hope the sun shines on the day, which is a real draw for people from all parts of Gloucester, as well as the local Hucclecote residents. All are welcome to the Club which meets on the fourth Thursday of each month in the Community Centre, at 7.30pm. Entry per talk is ÂŁ2 for non-members, with coffee/tea and biscuits and raffle, as well as a great Speaker. For further details please contact Sue on Gloucester 543573 or Joy on Gloucester 553185. Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our meeting in May was a selection of different subjects. The first was the resolution for the WI to vote on. There were 8 options to choose from and after voting we sent our decision to WI house. They count all the resolution up from all WI’s in the country and the one that is selected is the one that WI puts its strength into and we battle against government to put forward this resolution. Then light heartily we had a photo competition, where members bought in photos of when they were a child (we all looked so cute). Followed by tea and cake, chatter (lots of it) we all had a very enjoyable evening. We have different speakers on various subjects most months. Other things happening through this year include meals out, friendly skittles, coffee mornings, afternoon tea. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by refreshments, and most importantly, the chance to chat and socialise. Our most recent speaker was Irene Tyack, from the Yellow Hat Tribe Gallery at Chipping Norton. Irene's life story, which included leaving home at 15 and living independently, working in Herefordshire and the Cotswolds as a fruit picker, cleaner, barmaid, waitress and nanny, whilst single-handedly raising a family of six, made for an amusing and absorbing tale. When Irene met Vince Tyack, an entrepreneur who farms ostriches, their conversations led to the inspiration for The Yellow Hat Tribe, the brightly-coloured folk who are the subject of Irene's paintings, and at 50, she finally realised her life-long ambition to become a painter. Irene's work has been featured on ITV, and is exhibited world-wide. Forthcoming Guild events include a coach trip in July; our Guild's 50th anniversary lunch in August, and the annual Quiz and skittles matches. Our next speakers include Rosemary Morgan on "Memories and Monologues", and a demonstration by Neil Alcock of the Vineyard Pottery. Guests and Visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
