Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the July edition of your Hucclecote Link. So unfortunately we are not out of the woods yet re Covid and ‘Freedom Day’, as some are calling it, has been pushed back by 4 weeks. As I am writing this the numbers are on the rise again, but still the vaccine programme is going well, so let’s keep everything crossed that during those extra 4 weeks many adults will have received both vaccinations and that despite the covid cases rising, the numbers of patients in hospital beds remains low. So now the question on everyone’s mind is where will we be able to go for our Summer holiday? I know that as I have family living abroad, I can’t wait to be able to visit them, Covid allowing of course - but sadly the odds are looking slim for being able to visit again this Summer! On a more positive note, our Community & sports centres are now also opening up and events can start to take place, so if you are looking to get back out there or are hoping to plan an event - do get in touch with them, see Hucclecote Community Centre on page 2 and Saintbridge Sports Centre on page 21. The Cinema has been able to open again, and so you can find this months film listings on page 23, along with a chance to win 2 Cineworld tickets by completing the Sudoku on page 22. Also see page 15 to see your new Number 10 buses that will be in your area very soon. Please do keep on supporting our local Businesses, they need it now more that ever. Have a great month but please all continue to take care and keep safe Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Working safely

DIY enthusiasts need the same protection as tradesmen. This includes protective goggles and gloves, protective masks and ear protectors. Dust, sprays, and flying chips are not uncommon in DIY work – which is why you should protect your eyes. Standard protective goggles are usually sufficient. When performing work like sawing, sanding or chiselling, you should not underestimate the risk of possible hand injuries caused by chips. Full protection is only offered by special protective gloves. You should not wear any gloves when using hand-held circular saws, belt sanders and drills because they can get caught in the rotating tools. Don't forget breathing protection: When drilling, sawing, sanding, planing or routing, you should protect your lungs with a disposable protective mask – even better with a fine dust mask. When dealing with insulation wool or solvent-based paints and varnishes, masks with activated carbon filters provide the best protection. Don’t forget the strain put on your ears when drilling, sawing, sanding, etc. Earplugs are sufficient for sporadic use. If you frequently work with noise-intensive power tools, it is advisable to use ear muffs. Wear the right clothes: They should be comfortable, tight-fitting and flameproof. Watches and jewellery are dangerous and should be taken off before you begin with the work. For your own safety, tie up long hair to prevent it getting caught up in running machines. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Due to the extension of restrictions on indoor social gatherings, the Guild will NOT be able to meet in July after all. So the Bowls Taster session and Afternoon Tea in August will be our first informal get-together, and then the first evening meeting, at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th September at the Hucclecote Community Centre, will (hopefully) be the start of our regular monthly meetings, with a speaker, refreshments, and the chance to catch up with everyone we've not seen for such a long time! Members, guests and visitors will be very welcome - please telephone Linda on 617701 if you have any questions, or just come along on the night.

Hucclecote Garden Club At the time of going to press, the Garden Club is hoping to resume meetings on Thursday 22nd July, 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre, with a talk on the 'Natural World of Gloucestershire' given by Robert Bryant. Robert has been to our Garden Club before sharing his talk - A year-long walk in Woodchester Park, Gloucestershire, with photographs taken throughout the year to illustrate the flora, fauna and landscape of this unique valley owned by the National Trust. July can be a busy time in the garden with shrubs that need pruning, hedges to cut, feeding and watering plants in containers, deadheading flowers as they fade, planting autumn-flowering bulbs. In the kitchen garden new potatoes, onions and garlic can be lifted. Raspberries and currants can be picked, etc., etc. We hope to see our Members again after such a long break and we also hope to welcome some new visitors. Our programme of speakers kicks off this month with plenty more lined up for the coming months. Please come along if you are new to the area or to gardening, I'm sure there will be somebody who will be able to answer any gardening queries you may have. Further information from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573.
