Dave’s top tips The formula for calculating areas, volume and perimeters Here are a few simple guides to aid in calculating common building requirements. To calculate the areas, use the following formula: Width x length = Area (For example, a floor 2 meters by 3 meters the area will be 2 x 3 = 6 m2) To calculate the volume, use this formula: Width x length x depth (or height) = Volume (For example, for top soil required on a garden 2 meters by 3 meters and laid to a depth of 30 cm has the volume 2 x 3 x 0.3 = 1.8 m3) To calculate the perimeter, simply add up the sides of the area that you are working with. For example, the fence length (and perimeter) around a garden which is 2 meters by 3 meters will be 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 10m Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

‘It's a Gift We all like receiving gifts and presents, whether for a birthday, Christmas, anniversary or those surprise occasions you just don't expect. Invariably it doesn't matter what the gift is or how much it cost as the well-known saying is so true, "it's the thought that counts". Another saying we often use is "it's better to give than receive." I was amazed recently when I found out that a young person I know decided that they didn't want presents for their birthday but money instead. Now there is nothing unusual there, as who wouldn't turn down a crisp £10 note instead of a pair of socks, but the next part of the story is a little different. This collection of money was not to be used to buy a new computer game or mobile phone but was given away to support a child in another part of the world for whom each new day is both a gift and a struggle to find the essentials just to survive. Giving is definitely a key characteristic of being human, a pre-programmed disposition towards generosity. If you don't believe me just reflect on the £32 million raised by Children in need last year or the £1 billion mark reached by Comic relief this year. Now we all may know one or two people who are not so generous but I think to be truly human, to live as we were meant to be, were are designed to be generous. The Bible says that God loves a cheerful giver, so may we look for an opportunity or find the time to give something to someone who has real needs; it could be a big appeal event, an extra couple of food items for the local food bank or just some loose change in a charity envelope that drops through the letterbox.

Hearts and Hurricanes WI We are a young, informal and friendly WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. We're currently increasing our membership, so it's a great time to come along and try a meeting. For our May meeting we had a demonstration of pole dancing, and the braver ones among us had a go (it's much harder than it looks!!) For our June meeting (Weds 10) we're being somewhat more sedate and holding a vintage tea party to celebrate 100 years of the WI. We try to arrange interesting and varied speakers for our meetings - we've got chocolate tasting and car maintenance lined up in the next few months. In between the monthly meetings we also hold other clubs for WI members: book club, craft club, a dining club, as well as regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips. We always include time during our meetings for tea (or wine!) and cake and a chance to chat with other members. For more information, please see www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. Why not give it a go - you know you want to!

Do you enjoy playing board games, scrabble, cards, dominoes, draughts Would you like a chat and an afternoon cup of tea and cake? Then

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD

The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At every meeting there is a speaker, tea & coffee, and a chance to chat and socialise. The speaker at the most recent meeting was Tony Caldwell, on Wainwright's Coast-to -Coast Walk; the 190 mile walk from Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast, to St Bee's Head on the west coast. The walk covers some of the most stunning areas for walkers to discover - the Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, and the photographs taken along the two-week walk certainly showed this. The Guild has a Ramblers' Group which meets regularly, but for slightly less demanding and more local walks! Events planned for 2015 include theatre trips to the Everyman Theatre and the St John's Players, the annual inter-Guild Quiz and Skittles evenings, and the Fashion Show in August. Speakers at the forthcoming meetings will be the Ifakara Bakery Project, and Celia's Pantry Preserves. Visitors and new members are always welcome to join us. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!

Hucclecote Horticultural Society By now you should have all your seedlings – flowers and vegetables well established, if not already out in the garden. I hope that you are having more luck than me with some of them – once again I seem to be having trouble getting any parsnip seeds to germinate. Don’t forget to feed your plants once they are up and running – a good tomato feed will help many plants other than tomatoes along. And if you are worried about blight, while you can’t put many potatoes in the greenhouse, you can keep the tomatoes in there in good sized pots. Our next meeting is on 25th June, when our own member Jan Broadway will be talking to us about the history of Kew Gardens. If you have been to Kew you will know what a fabulous place it is to visit – the glasshouses and water lilies in particular I think are spectacular. If you haven’t been there, why not come along and get a flavour of what you could get to see. Then on July 23rd we are going to hear a lot more about allotment gardening. Dave Cropp will be entertaining us as he talks about ‘his allotted time’ – the time he spends down at the allotment. Growing vegetables and flowers as well as nattering and drinking tea I hope. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on the 4th Thursday of the month, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, or to be an expert gardener – I’m definitely not! More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News

33

The main event being the May Day Camp at Rudford, the weather rather cold with some rain but we still managed to do a full weekend of activities. With 24 Scouts in four patrols all cooking on open fires, job getting them going Sunday morning after the rain particularly those who had not put thin kindling wood in their shelters. Other activities included an incident trail with various challenges incidents on the way round. A compass treasure hunt, camp fire sing song lead by the Patrol Leaders, rounders and football. The new Scouts made apple pie cooked in camp ovens and Jam Roly Poly. We are now all looking forward to the weeks summer camp on the Gower Coast. A session of Go Karting and Lazer Tag is booked and is always very popular. With the lighter evenings we are outside doing activities with fires and pioneer poles plus more active games than we do inside the H.Q. The Pioneer Bridge at the Brownie and Guide event at Dinglewell School went well with the rain clearing just in time for many children from 4 upwards having a go crossing the bridge (some with a little help). Although Cubs are fairly full five will be coming up into Scouts in September (when we hold the annual Father/Mothers camp at Cranham) so they will have spaces as do the Beavers who meet on Mondays and Thursdays. Scouts are sending eight into the Explorer unit so also have spaces, please contact Terry on 521664 if you have boys or girls from 6 to 14 who may be interested in coming along to see what Scouting is like. If you are interested in helping out at any unit please contact me. You will not be left running a unit but a few more hands are always welcome, you will not be expected to stay with the Group as long as me. There is no retirement age in Scouting as at work which I have now reached both and still fairly active I am pleased to say.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our speakers in April were Sue and Aileen from the Cobalt centre in Cheltenham who spoke to us about Ovarian Cancer. They were extremely knowledgeable about the disease and advised us how to spot the signs, what to look for, and what to do. Although a very serious topic they were very upbeat and the evening was very enjoyable and extremely informative. We have lots of things happening throughout the year, speakers and outings so why not come and see for yourselves, there is definitely something for everyone, and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except for August). Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. Please mention
