Dave’s top tips
Leaking gutters A common problem people are faced with after a heavy downpour of rain is that they find that their guttering starts to leak. This can simply just be a case of the gutter overflowing due to a build up of debris such as moss getting trapped, usually in the downpipe or on a bend. Of course an easy fix is just to get it cleaned out. Another cause can be where the seals on a union (joint) have perished over the years and this is usually indicated by a constant dripping from the joint long after the rain has stopped. Many people may be tempted to try and seal the joint with a silicone sealant but this is rarely a long term fix. Also this makes a replacement at a later date more difficult as the old cured sealant must be removed from the guttering. The only real answer is to replace the offending union along with new seals that come with them. Many brands of guttering joints etc are of a fairly standard size but not all, so you may be lucky with just unclipping the joint and unscrewing the unit from the fascia. Replacement is the reverse procedure, you will however need a head for heights and good sturdy ladders, if you have neither then it may be best to leave it to a tradesman to give you a proper repair. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Top chefs and a feast of family fun at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, July 22-24, 2016
Three of our most famous TV chefs will be helping to cook up a fabulous feast of fun, food and drink and live entertainment at Gloucester Quays Food Festival from July 22-24. TV’s popular chef Tom Kerridge, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and Reggae Reggae Sauce creator Levi Roots will all be demonstrating their fantastic skills at what promises to be the biggest and most successful food festival yet. On Friday, July 22, Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain will be demonstrating some of the delicious recipes from her book as well as the enthusiasm, wit and warmth that won the hearts of TV viewers as she meets her many fans. Nadiya, who has since appeared on numerous TV shows, will soon be publishing her first cookbook, Nadiya’s Kitchen. On Saturday, July 23, TV chef Tom Kerridge will return to his home city of Gloucester to share the skills that have made him a household name and wow the crowds at Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Tom said: “Having grown up in Gloucester and with strong family ties in the area, I can’t wait to return to the city. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at Gloucester Quays Food Festival, it should be a fantastic weekend.” With his warmth and keen sense of humour, Tom who is the chef patron of the twoMichelin starred Hand and Flowers pub plus another restaurant, The Coach, both in Marlow, has had a hugely successful TV career. With shows such as BBC 2’s Proper Pub Food and his latest TV programme, Bake Off Crème De La Crème, it seems that Tom and his culinary genius and words of wisdom are never far from our screens. On Sunday, July 24 it will be the turn of Levi Roots to entertain the visitors to Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Levi soared to fame when he appeared on TV’s Dragon’s Den with his now famous Reggae Reggae Sauce. He went on to open his own Caribbean restaurant, launch a successful musical career, become a motivational speaker and even publish a business book. Nadiya Hussain, Tom Kerridge and Levi Roots will all be signing their books and meeting and greeting fans at 2.45pm inside Gloucester Quays Outlet on the day that they each appear at the Food Festival. Gloucester Quays Centre Manager Matt Bird said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming TV chefs Tom Kerridge, Nadiya Hussain and Levi Roots to the Food Festival this year and I’m sure their live cooking demonstrations and the passion they have for creating the finest food are going to thrill our visitors. “Tickets for the cookery demonstrations are limited so we always encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment. Entry to the rest of the Food Festival is free and it really will be a fantastic event for all the family to enjoy with a host of attractions, some of the finest foods, drink and gifts plus special event offers from many of our retailers.” Now in its sixth year, Gloucester Quays Food Festival, which attracted a record 148,000 visitors in 2015, is now established as the biggest event of its type in the South West. More than 120 stalls will offer everything from mouth-watering artisan pies, succulent farm sausages and lovingly brewed real ales to crafts and jewellery. Hucclecote Scout News Although the weather very mixed for the May day weekend 24 Scouts camped at Randwick sleeping in tents and cooking on open fires in patrols. The short night hike on the Friday went well as did the incident trail on the Saturday afternoon (even if some got a bit lost) (No sat Navs). All looking forward to summer camp near Newquay, again with 24 on camp trip to Lands End and activity site plus visits to other beaches for swimming. Although we have tents up at summer camp many Scouts sleep outside in the kitchen shelters. A session at the climbing centre continues are extra summer activities is always popular. Details for the 47th Father or Mums and Beavers, Cubs and Scout camp at Cranham on weekend of September 16th. A weekend of activities with partners joining us for the Saturday night camp fire. Forms must be back by the end of June to join the 80 + who come each year. The celebration camp at Woodhouse Scout camp (near Bristol) for 100 years of Cub Scouts was a great success with plenty of activities and a firework display on the Saturday night. I am sure the 150 Cubs will remember it for a long time. Please phone terry on 521664 if you have anyone between 6 and 14 who may like to come along to a meeting and see the fun we have at meetings.
Hucclecote Garden Club Some of our Members were lucky enough to travel to Malvern for the RHS Malvern Spring Show held in May, the weather was glorious and the Show Grounds were packed with people. There were plenty of Gardening Celebs on show - Carol Klein, Monty Don and Mr. Gardening himself - Alan Titchmarsh. Although most of us are plant-aholics, we were pretty restrained in our plant purchases, although temptation was all around us! At one of our Committee meetings we pondered how we could attract a few more Members and gain a bit of publicity at the same time. Our Treasurer said he would contact Richard Atkins from Radio Gloucestershire - who does the Sunday morning show - who he knows as a result of previously opening his Garden for the National Garden Scheme. A date was set for our interview with Richard - the four of us wondered what we would say, and how we would sound on radio - the interview took place in our Treasurer's lovely garden in Longlevens. We needn't have worried, we each had 2 minutes to speak, and it was over in a flash. We hope it had the desired effect, and attract a few more Members. The Bring and Buy Plant Sale held at Hucclecote Methodist Church Hall in May was a great success, and we did very well on the Table we hired - the money we made on the day will help pay for future Speakers. From tiny Squash plants, currant bushes, wild flowers, perennials of all shapes and sizes to a large tropical-looking house plant, most of our plants sold, the remainder will hopefully join many more on our table at the Hucclecote Community Association Show on Saturday 18th June. The Garden Club meets on the fourth Thursday each month at 7.30pm in Hucclecote Community Centre - do come and join us.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our meeting in April commenced with a speaker Jemma Fowkes on the subject of Birch, Beer, and Bibles – Education in the 16th & 17th Centuries. She arrived in costume and brought many artefacts from that era, which was very interesting and enjoyed by all. We played our first game of knockout skittles (which is played against other WI’s) luck was on our side and we won, we are looking forward to the next match and everyone enjoyed the evening. We have different speakers on various subjects. Other things happening through this year include meals out, friendly skittles, coffee mornings, afternoon tea. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. Phone Ellen on 01452 611976 or Betty on 01452 698299 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. 'Believing for the impossible’ No doubt like many in the community I have been amazed and delighted at the rise in the fortunes of Leicester City FC this last season. Hearing the statistics of the club over recent years it is a phenomenal achievement. Well done Leicester City! I'm cautious at mentioning the strange game of football in such a devoted Rugby city but their success deserves acclaim. For the record my own team have plummeted in relegation from the Championship - just don't mention Bolton Wanderers! There seem to be many occasions in life when we find ourselves hoping or believing for the miraculous and watching for signs of hope. It might be a health issue, a strained relationship, concerns about children or parents, disputes with employers or neighbours and anything else from a broad range of life issues. As a Christian I am drawn to the strength and hope found in faith and in fellowship with other believers. If you are facing an impossible situation and would value a listening ear, some advice or someone to pray with you and for you please let us know. Today I take great courage from a snippet of Scripture "Jesus looked at them intently and said, 'Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible'". I hope it might also be an encouragement for you. Rev Andrew Axon, St Philip & St James Church Hucclecote.'
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits and, most importantly, a chance to chat and socialise. Topics of our forthcoming speakers are a demonstration of "Hanging Baskets with Highfield" by Jon Mason, and "Memories and Monologues" by Rosemary Morgan. The speaker at our last meeting was Lisa Chapman, from Forever Living. Lisa's talk centred around health and well-being, and outlined how our health has been influenced by our diet over the last century, spanning rationing and government policy, and through to today's increased reliance on convenience foods, and an excess of salt, sugar and fat in our diets. The diet during WWII when rationing was in force offered the optimum diet for health, whereas the 1980s saw a surge in chronic disease. Forever Living's range aloe vera products can counter the effects of our modern diet and lifestyle, and we were all given a selection of samples to take home. Visitors and guests are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
