Dave’s top tips Drilling large holes
Larger holes are often required when installing switches or laying pipes. For this reason, special drill bit shapes and special material are necessary. If you want to work on wood or soft plastic, you will require not only an impact drill but also special accessories – what are known as hole cutters or hole saws. These enable you to drill in soft materials such as fiberboard or wood. Accessories made of High Speed Steel (HSS) should be used for working on metal and hard plastics. A tungsten-carbide multi-purpose drill bit is recommended for drilling in stone or tiles. It is also suitable for hard woods, wooden materials and coated boards. The harder the material, the higher the frictional forces between the material and the bit. Therefore, water has to be used to cool the holes being drilled in tiles or concrete. Large holes that are drilled in metal are lubricated and cooled with a special drill emulsion, lubricating paste or machine oil. Safety is paramount: Due to the large circumference of the drill bits, much greater forces occur during work than in normal drilling applications. Modern drills have such high power that they cannot be held if they get jammed. This is why you should drill with an auxiliary handle attached. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club The Hucclecote Methodist Church Bring and Buy Plant Sale held last month was a great success, with a queue of visitors waiting to come into the hall. The hall was heaving with people carrying anything from tomato plants, assorted pots, herbs, even lawn mowers. Thanks to the generosity of our Members we had so many plants for sale that we completely ran out of space on our single table, even with trays stacked under the table, that we were kindly offered two more tables to show our wares. Our May speaker was Bill Laws from Hereford. Bill's talk was entitled 'The Curious History of Vegetables', which was the back-story of our vegetables and was anything but mundane. From guinea gardens to GM seeds, and from aphrodisiacs to naked allotment holders, no stone was left unturned. A most enlightening look at vegetables. Later in the year we have talks on Cacti and their history, and Mr. Chris Evans from Dundry Nurseries makes a welcome return to help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary of the Club. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. For more details please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573 To advertise call 01452 617040
Hucclecote Larkhay WI

Our meeting in April was ‘Floral Arrangements’by Liz Fallon. It was a very interesting talk and she made it look very simple. She also explained that many florists Have changed the flowers in bouquest and gone back to the scented varieties, to help not only stimulate the visual effect but also our sense of smell, which can bring back happy memories. Following every talk we have tea and biscuits and time for a chat, and a raffle. We have many activities to look forward to in the coming year, skittles, strawberry tea, croquet (which we have done for a few years) but we never tire, it is great fun and at the end we have a fabulous tea. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm, visitors and guests are very welcome. For more information phone Beverley on 01452 63208 or just pop in to see us.
Glevum Probus Club We are a friendly, non-political club which meets at St Lawrence Parish Centre, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month Future talks are on the following subjects; 12th June – Bob Train – Life on a Container Ship 26th June – Frances Seeney – Patagonia and Easter Island 10th July – Stuart Mitchel – Infectious Diseases Part 2 Visitors and potential members are welcome Please contact Terry 01452 612432 - For more information visit: glevum-probus.org.uk
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At each meeting, we have a speaker or demonstration covering a wide range of interests and subjects, a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Our most recent speaker was Michael Boyes, who gave an illustrated talk about the Le Marchant family of Little Rissington; who comprised the Rector, his six sons, and his nine spinster daughters. Their time in the village spanned the late Victorian era to the 1940s, and Michael's talk, based on diaries and photos, gave an interesting insight into their lives. Instead of following traditional pastimes for young ladies of that era, the Le Marchant girls excelled in sport - particularly cricket and golf - and photography. "Dates for the diary" over the coming months include lunches in local pubs and restaurants; an Anniversary Afternoon Tea, tickets for the St John's Players in Churchdown, and a taster session at the Mid Glos Bowls Club. The Ramblers' Group are enjoying the better weather, and have a programme of walks planned. Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more details, or just come along to the next meeting you will be made very welcome.
