Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the June edition of your Hucclecote Link. I really hope that this edition finds you all safe and well after the last few weeks of lockdown. I don’t think any of us could have predicted what was about to happen to us all and the impact that it has had across the whole world - it has effected every part of our lives. Thankfully I think we can start to see some light at the end of the tunnel, although I still feel that ‘normal’ is a long way off. There is a ‘new normal’ that we will all need to adjust to first. Still the good news is that tradespeople are able to get back to work whilst maintaining social distancing measures. Covid 19 will have had such an impact on our local businesses that now more that ever it is a really important time for us to help support them and help get them back on their feet. At the Link Directories we are proud to support many local businesses, and although sadly there are many that are still unable to open or operate as we have gone to print with this edition - we do hope that over the coming months they will all be able to return back to us and we will be able to promote their fantastic services to you soon. If you know of any businesses that have had to change what they offer during these times, or have a story to tell of how they have survived over recent weeks - please let us know we would love to publish local success stories in future editions and help spread some positive news. Please all continue to take care and keep safe Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Loft Flooring.

Flooring in the loft or attic must only be done to store items such as empty suitcases. The loft or attic area is not designed to carry loads heavier than this and the horizontal rafter sections in your loft are there purely to hold up the ceiling below. You will see that in any part of the loft where there is, for example, a water tank, the floor is reinforced and, in a lot of cases, the rafters are given additional support by hanging timbers attached to the pitched section of the trusses To put a floor in your loft is not a difficult job. It is made much easier by the production of special loft panel flooring. These panels are 18mm thick, 1.2m long and only 320mm wide. This means they are easy to get through the loft hatch. They come in packs of 3 or 5 usually and a pack of 3 is enough to cover a little over 1 square metre. You must make sure you do not lay the floor right up to the edge (eaves) of the floor space as air must be allowed to circulate in the loft to avoid condensation. The loft panels have tongue and grooved sides and ends to allow you to slot one into another. This gives them strength. The long sides should be laid at 90 degrees to the joists and the ends should always meet on a joist. Floorboard joints should be staggered for greater strength. It is very rare for the boards to meet naturally on a joist. Normally a board has to be cut so it finishes in the middle of the joist. This means of course that the tongue and groove need to be cut off both boards where they meet. This does not matter, as the joint will be very strong when it sits on the joist. Do not be tempted to join boards between joists as they will soon sag and cause a weak spot in the floor. Each screw should be countersunk and a pilot hole drilled. This makes fixing the boards easier and takes the heads of the screws below the level of the floor so when you slide suitcases along the floor they do not catch and tear on the screws Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Hucclecote Garden Club Hucclecote Garden Club continues in these strange times, but as with all other Garden Clubs in the country, as an online entity, mainly thanks to our Newsletter Queen - Jenny, who has regularly kept Members in touch. We have had garden-themed word searches, quizzes, and general garden news, as well as beautiful photographs taken by Members showing prize flowers in the garden, wonderful butterflies, birds and insects of all varieties. We certainly do have some talented photographers in our Club. Many of our Members have taken advantage of viewing the virtual RHS Malvern Spring Show which takes place in May, this was great and only made us realise what we are missing in lock-down. Past RHS Chelsea Flower Shows have also been shown in television and I think most of us have pencilled in 2021 Chelsea as a must for next year. We will not be holding meetings in June, July and August, but we await Government guidelines on social distancing and a loosening of the restrictions next month. We have great plans for 2021 including Speakers Julie Ritchie from Hoo House Nursery near Tewkesbury talking on "Winter into Spring plants" and Pam Turner speaking on "Alpines round the Garden". Further details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD In common with everything else, the Guild has had to cancel all it's planned events since March. This includes the regular Lunch Club, a Guided Walking Tour of Gloucester, the Afternoon Tea and Bowling session, all fund-raising events and, of course, the monthly evening meetings at the Hucclecote Community Centre. Members have been keeping in touch by phone and email, or - at a distance! - whilst out walking locally for exercise. The Guild HOPES to meet for the first time in October, on Thursday 15th at 7.30pm, at the Hucclecote Community Centre. Please phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 during the first week of October, by which time the situation will be clearer. Our grateful thanks to the Hucclecote Link for giving The Guild this opportunity to communicate with members - past, present and future! - and to wish everyone well

Hucclecote Larkhay WI The Larkhay WI has for the last 10 weeks been in lockdown. We have all been in isolation and only go out for the essentials, unless we are lucky enough to have family to help. We hope that at this moment we will be able to return in September, but this depends on government guidelines and the social climate. We have missed a lot of social gatherings due to the coronavirus, such as outings, cream teas, lunches out etc. But our main priority has been to keep everyone safe and well. Look after yourselves and keep well and like the rest of us, we are all looking forward to getting back to normal. The Larkhay WI normally meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm For more information on when we may restart phone Beverley on 01452 613208
