A bit about
The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the June edition of your Hucclecote Link. Well at last it is starting to feel like a bit of normality is now returning. Many adults have now had at least one vaccine, with many of the over 50’s already having had 2 in our areas. Retail is opening up again, and that is great news for many of our local businesses. Beauty salons, hairdressers and leisure centres have all started to open their doors again and I’m sure we can’t wait to get back and support them. We have a few beauty salons that advertise with us and they would love to have your support, you can find them all on our index page, page 26. How many of you have managed to have a meal out, and been able to sit indoors since the middle of May? How nice has that felt, especially with the way the weather has been recently! Fingers crossed, it the covid numbers keep dropping, as well as us now being allowed inside restaurants, we will be able to move into the final Step 4 from 21st June. So now the question on everyones mind is where will we be able to go for our Summer holiday? I know that as I have family living abroad, I can’t wait to be able to visit them, Covid allowing of course! Thankfully our Community & sports centres are now also opening up and events can start to take place, so if you are looking to get back out there or are hoping to plan an event - do get in touch with them - page 2 and 21. Please do keep on supporting our local Businesses, they need it now more that ever. Have a great month but please all continue to take care and keep safe Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Working safely
DIY enthusiasts need the same protection as tradesmen. This includes protective goggles and gloves, protective masks and ear protectors. Dust, sprays, and flying chips are not uncommon in DIY work – which is why you should protect your eyes. Standard protective goggles are usually sufficient. When performing work like sawing, sanding or chiselling, you should not underestimate the risk of possible hand injuries caused by chips. Full protection is only offered by special protective gloves. You should not wear any gloves when using hand-held circular saws, belt sanders and drills because they can get caught in the rotating tools. Don't forget breathing protection: When drilling, sawing, sanding, planing or routing, you should protect your lungs with a disposable protective mask – even better with a fine dust mask. When dealing with insulation wool or solvent-based paints and varnishes, masks with activated carbon filters provide the best protection. Don’t forget the strain put on your ears when drilling, sawing, sanding, etc. Earplugs are sufficient for sporadic use. If you frequently work with noise-intensive power tools, it is advisable to use ear muffs. Wear the right clothes: They should be comfortable, tight-fitting and flameproof. Watches and jewellery are dangerous and should be taken off before you begin with the work. For your own safety, tie up long hair to prevent it getting caught up in running machines. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD With the lifting of Covid restrictions getting nearer, the Guild is looking forward to it's first meeting - 7.30pm on Thursday 15th July, at the Hucclecote Community Centre. This is planned to be an informal get-together, with a short AGM, when we can all meet face-to-face for the first time in over a year. Obviously, any rules on Social Distancing which are still in place will be observed. There is an Afternoon Tea and Bowls Taster session booked for August, and from September onwards, it is hoped to recommence our programme of monthly meetings, with a speaker or demonstration. Members, guests and visitors are welcome to come along. For more information, please contact Linda on 617701.
Hucclecote Garden Club Last month the Garden Club were able to join gardening colleagues from Hucclecote Methodist Church in a new initiative, a Plant Sale weekend, 14 -16 May where various members from both the Gardening Club and the Church set up a table outside their house on which could be found an array of interesting and home-grown plants for sale. The proceeds from which went to the Methodist Church, Garden Club and the James Hopkins Trust. The Plant Sale took the place of the ever popular Bring and Buy Plant Sale which historically took place on the May Bank Holiday Monday and for Covid reasons had to be cancelled again this year. Only a month to go now before we re-start our Club on the 22nd July, 7.30pm in Hucclecote Community Centre. We look forward to seeing old gardening friends and welcoming any new locals who want a fun evening listening to an excellent speaker, taking part in our ever popular raffle and picking up useful gardening tips from our regular Members. A few gardening jobs we can be getting on with during June include deadheading our flowers, pruning spring-flowering shrubs, tidying and cutting back spring-flowering perennials, lifting and dividing overgrown clumps of bulbs and the enjoyable task of planting out summer bedding and containers, including hanging baskets.
