Dave’s top tips Fitting wall cabinets Kitchen cabinets and other built-in cabinets often carry a very large weight, meaning that they need to be fitted to the wall with appropriate strength. The best method is to use fixings and screw hooks (or mounting rails from the DIY store, in which you simply suspend the cabinets). First of all, mark the fixing points with a spirit level. Make sure that no cables or pipes run through the positions marked (using a metal detector). Next you will need to drill the holes. Remove the dust from the holes and insert the wall fixings. Knock in the fixings with a hammer if required, turn the screw hooks into the fixings and fit the cabinet. To connect several cabinets, use a wood drill bit to drill continuous holes in the side panels and bolt the cabinets to each other. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Gardening Tips for March from Garden Delight..2013
21
Flowers, Tubs and Borders Prune Hybrid Tea (large flowered) and Floribunda (cluster flowered) roses this month. Do not prune Shrub or Rambler roses as they flower on last year’s wood. Give all roses a good feed Toprose is excellent as it contains trace elements promoting strong growth and good flower production. Herbaceous plants should begin to show signs of growth this month. Scatter some ‘Chicken Pellet’ food around them, fork this in and mulch over with some compost or chippings to keep in them moisture and keep weeds down. Put in supports for the taller growing herbaceous plants tie them up as they grow to give support. Prune Hardy Fuchsia to 6’’ and top dress with compost. Cut back hard the coloured stems on Cornus and Willows this will encourage new growth from the base and keep the plants bushy and give great ‘stem colour’ next winter. Start off Begonias or Gloxinia tubers in trays of compost indoors. Harden the sweet pea seedlings off outside bringing them out as the days warm up ready for planting out at the end of the month to April
Fruit and Vegetables Plant the first of your seed potatoes but keep an eye on the weather and protect any new growth coming through the soil from frosts. As the month progresses sow Broad Beans, Lettuce, Leeks , Parsnips, Peas, Radish, Salad Onions, Spinach and Swish Chard. Then toward the end of the month Sprouts, Red and Summer Cabbage and Dwarf Beans under cloches. As the month warms up spray Peach and Nectarine trees with Dithane 945 to help prevent Peach leaf curl.
Greenhouse Sow tender bedding plants in trays or propagators under glass. E.g. Busy Lizzies, Marigolds, Petunias, Asters, Salvias, and Nicotiana etc.. Sow Tomatoes, Cucumber, Peppers etc or wait until April to buy the plants from garden centres. Bring Dahlia tubers into growth by placing them in shallow trays of compost. You can take extra cuttings off some of the new growth but be sure to leave plenty to keep growing once they are in the ground.
Lawns If seeding a new lawn this is the time to prepare the area using good loam raked, levelled and firmed as a base for the seeding or laying down good quality turf. Existing lawns will benefit from a combined feed weed and moss killer. Rake and scarify the lawn to get rid of winter debris and aerate with a hollow tine fork if drainage is a problem Check out our web site for more information and a list of the services we offer www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. March 2013 Release’s Friday 1st March HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past. SAFE HAVEN When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family. But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards. Friday 8th March OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. Friday 15th March THE LAST EXORCISM 2: BEGINNING OF THE END As Nell Sweetzer tries to build a new life after the events of the first movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more horrific plan. Friday 22nd March THE CROODS The Croods is a prehistoric comedy adventure that follows the world's first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from danger is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures -- and their outlook is changed forever. Friday 29th March G.I. JOE: RETALIATION The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. Framed for crimes against the country, the G.I. Joe team is terminated by the President's order, and the surviving advertise call 01452and 617040 team members face off againstTo Zartan, his accomplices, the world leaders he has under his influence.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Yet more rain – as I write this piece it is still pouring down, and more rain and snow is forecast. Will it ever let up I ask? I am still waiting for the opportunity to get round to one of the first gardening jobs of the year – digging the ground over so that it is ready to take my broad beans and potatoes. Roll on some dry and sunny days. Our next meeting is on March 28th and it is a Members’ evening. This will include a question and answer session – it’s always surprising to find that there is invariably someone who knows the answer to the question that has been baffling you for ages: as well as our bring and buy, raffle and quiz. It is also the date of our AGM, so this is a good opportunity for you to come along and sign up as a new member, and to support the Society by volunteering to help the committee if you feel so inclined. Then on April 25th we will be hosting Steve Head. Steve will be showing us how we can help benefit the wildlife [though hopefully not the slugs] as we go about our activities in the garden. We all love to see different or unusual birds visiting, and we long for a sighting of a fox or a hedgehog, so this could be an opportunity to find out how to increase our chances. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.
St Philip and St James Church 'March Thoughts This month always makes me happy. The joy of Mother's Day, hot cross buns, Easter eggs and the dawn of spring flowers and warmer weather (hopefully!!!) makes for a good month. At the end of March this year we will once again arrive at our Easter celebrations. You are very welcome to join us at St Philip & St James Church as we make the journey from a noisy Palm Sunday to a shared meal on Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday we are confronted with the stark reminder of Jesus' death and on to the glorious celebration of Easter Sunday. This year we are delighted to welcome the new Archdeacon of Gloucester to lead and preach at our worship services. I am very fond of this quote from the late Basil Hume, "The great gift of Easter is hope - Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake". Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Entering the hall for the January meeting of Hucclecote T G , members and visitors were treated to a lovely colourful display of Canal boat womens crafts, and also, four Canal Boat Women-dressed in their typical clothes, courtesy of Jill Ruiz, and her fellow friends of Gloucester Waterways Musuem at the Docks- and promising a very interesting and ‘visual’ talk. After the business part of the meeting Jill proceeded to tell us the history of the canal boat families, how the Bridgewater canal in Lancashire started the ‘narrow boat’ era for carrying cargoes- the boats being horse drawn initially, and how the wives and families had to help at locks etc so that the cargo could be moved to its destination as quickly as possible. Considering the size of the narrow boats, 70 foot long in total, of which the living accommodation was, 10 foot long, by 7 foot wide, by 5 foot high-the rest being used for cargo- it’s amazing to think how these highly skilled hardworking women, managed to bring up families- cooking, cleaning, making clothes,-rag rugs ,blankets, crocheting lace, decorating the living areas, especially when they had to carry unpleasant cargoes sometimes, and try to keep the children safe from drowning or being burnt on the cooking stoves, becoming sick (water for drinking taken from the canal- then boiled), in such a confined space. There were Canal Acts to try to regulate the boats – only supposed to be two adults and two children aboard, and compulsory education for the children but these were difficult to enforce because of the constant travelling, and by the late 1960’s all the working boats had gone, mostly pleasure craft using the canals now. A very enlightening and interesting evening. Thursday 31st January, virtually all the Guild members travelled to Cheltenham Park Hotel and enjoyed an excellent meal and evening at our Annual Dinner, many thanks to the ‘organisers’! The March meeting of Hucclecote T G will be Thursday 21st March at 7-30pm, and is a talk by Di Alexander entitled ‘Pen and Polisher’? The Sales Table will be; ‘Craft’.
Hucclecote Guiding parent support would like to thank everyone for contributing to the Christmas Fire Engine collection in December. Despite the awful weather and ill health that affected many of the regular supporters we still raised £970 of which a donation of £300 has been sent to the Winstons Wish charity. The Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units returned to their meetings mid January and are looking forward to another busy year of camps, meeting and various activities. If you have a daughter that would like to join the groups please contact Hucclecote guiding at admin@trefoilcentre.org.uk. Rainbows - age 5-7, Brownies age 7-10 & Guides 10 +.
