A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Hucclecote Link. March is a time of year when we usually think of Spring, the warmer weather, daffodils in the garden, lambs in the fields and starting to venture outside a bit more. But as I write this and look out of the window, all I can see is the awful wet and windy weather. For the poor people who are suffering with the floods, Spring must seem a million miles away. Lets hope that the weather starts to take a turn for the better soon. Even if we don’t get to venture outside this month, March is always a time when we think about giving our homes a Spring Clean. Time for You on page 23, is a great local cleaning company that can help out with Spring Cleans or help you out on a more regular basis if required. Later this month remember it’s Mothers Day. So if you are looking for somewhere to take your lovely mum, why not treat her to a lunch at Hatton Court, the menu on the opposite page looks delicious. Remember our Sudoku competition on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the new Cineworld at the Quays. Congratulations to Emily Gammon, the winner of this months Cineworld tickets. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top tips Stopcocks Many people don’t even know what a stopcock is let alone where it is in the house. So let us cover the first thing first. It is the mains water tap or the valve for turning off and on the water system in your home and is therefore very important, as some people find out too late. Stopcocks are usually found in the kitchen either below the sink unit or in some cases they’re in a front or back hall or in a larder unit beside the sink. If nothing else you really should ensure you know its location and also just turn it off and back on again every few months, as this will ensure it doesn’t seize up and become impossible to turn off in an emergency. Another option and especially useful if your grip isn’t as good as it used to be is to fit a remote shut off valve. This will turn the water off at the flick of a switch. These valves use the actual water pressure to hold themselves closed once the switch has been activated. No electrical connections are required and they are cost effective and they will give peace of mind to anyone who may struggle to turn a regular stopcock off. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.

In the twenty years since I qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor, I have dealt with many varied problems, and one of the most distressing ones for people to have to cope with, is bullying. Unfortunately bullying occurs in schools, in the workplace, in the home and in the neighbourhood, and more recently bullying is happening online in some of the more obnoxious websites. If you are suffering with this nasty type of situation you may be able to say about other 'areas' of life, where it is also happening. As we hear so often now, it has been taken to extremes with people self-harming or going on to do worse by committing suicide. It is an awful statistic that 15 to 25 children commit suicide every year in the UK alone and this number is rising. So what to do if you are struggling with any one of those above situations? Well, first of all, do NOT keep it to yourself....tell a parent, a teacher, or someone in charge so that you feel you aren't alone. For any teenager who might be reading this, do not go on any websites...they are 'fuel' to your suffering and will only make it worse. First of all, delete any nastiness online that you may be experiencing, but even before then, do NOT be tempted to read it. That is what the bully wants. Do not respond! This again is what the bully wants. Get help! See someone in authority who you can trust. Do not believe in the threats from the bullies, report them to ChildLine, (0800 1111) or the police,(phone 0845-090-1234 for Gloucestershire police, or in a complete emergency ring 999) or speak to Samaritans, (01452 515777). But whatever you do, don't just try and put up with it. For parents, or for partners of the bullied person, watch out for unexplained bruises, cuts or scratches, changes in appetite, change of moods, personal items going missing, isolation and/or frequent sick days or truant. Just remind yourself there is help out there, and also it is very sensible to see a qualified Hypnotherapist, like myself, who will help you to feel better and show you how to improve your self-esteem. See my phone number in the box below. If you are one of these obnoxious bullies, you should think to yourself right now that your 'days as a bully' are numbered, because bullying is against the law and one day soon you could feel the weight of the law upon you.

FRIDAY 7TH MARCH 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) assembles his troops to fend off an invading Persian army led by the immortal Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and the vindictive Persian navy commander Artemisia (Eva Green) in this sequel to 300 based on the graphic novel Xerses by Frank Miller

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H. A legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune -- all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent. Starring Bill Murray, Ralph Fiennes, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton and Willem Dafoe

FRIDAY 14TH MARCH NEED FOR SPEED Walt Disney Pictures and DreamWorks Entertainment present this adaptation of the hit videogame series Need for Speed. Fresh from prison, a street racer who was framed by a wealthy business associate joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins. Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul heads up the starring cast that also includes Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, and Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi.

FRIDAY 21ST MARCH A LONG WAY DOWN New Year's Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once -beloved TV personality, he's now desperate to jump. But he's not alone. Single mother Maureen (Toni Collette), sassy teen Jess (Imogen Poots), and musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Aaron Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these complete strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine's Day at least. Both funny and poignant, A Long Way Down follows this unlikely group of friends as they try to pull back from the brink.

STARRED UP Troubled teenager Eric (Jack O'Connell) is transferred to an adult prison, which only serves to amplify his explosive temper and violence behaviour. When he makes a weapon to use against the older inmates and is involved in a violent incident, Eric comes to the attention of Oliver, the resident prison counsellor. Eric reluctantly agrees to take part in Oliver's therapy sessions. Concerned that Eric may need more assistance to navigate the prison's complex webs of alliances and aggressive racial prejudices, Neville (Ben Mendelsohn), a fellow inmate, is called upon to keep him in line. It turns out that Nev is Eric's father, whom he's only seen sporadically over the past 12 years, and who is one of the reasons for Eric's violent ways.

FRIDAY 28TH MARCH CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Steve Rogers continues his journey as the super-powered American soldier who's grasping to find his place in a modern world after being frozen in ice since WWII with this Marvel Studios sequel. Chris Evans returns to star, with Samuel L.Jackson and Scarlett Johansson MUPPETS MOST WANTED The Muppets return in this Euro-set adventure that pits them against the dastardly Constantine, a dead ringer for Kermit who sparks a fun-filled caper for the gang. Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Ty Burrell head up the human cast.

LABOUR DAY Depressed single mom Adele (Kate Winslet) and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News The Scouts pantomime Peter Pan was a great success and enjoyed by parents and Scouts. Very pleased to welcome six cubs up into the Scouts, so have made a seventh patrol.

Even though we have not had any snow, we held a mid winter celebration meeting with snowball fight (plastic balls), ice hockey, skiing (gloves on feet) and building igloos from paper and canes, all great fun. The May Day camp site has been booked (hope the weather has dried up by then) and also all the activities for our Summer Camp in Yorkshire. We start a four week course on the ski slopes this month and Scouts should be able to ski from the top by the last session. We are also off to Go Karting and Lazer Tag this month. Other activities coming up through the Summer are Climbing, Wind Surfing and Kayaking. In our usual weekly meetings in the Summer where we do cooking on open fires and pioneer bridges, games on the stream and an activity on Painswick Beacon, new Scouts always welcome. The Cub unit came first in the District Quiz held at our H.Q With many Beavers coming into Cubs, we now have spaces for any boys and girls who are 6 years old to join. We have 2 units who meet on a Monday and Thursday so please phone Terry on 521664 for Beaver or Scout information.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our next meeting is our AGM at which I am hoping we just might be inundated with offers to join the committee this year. I am not holding my breath though. But I do offer my thanks to the current committee who have organised some excellent talks, and have even more lined up for next year. We do try to keep the AGM short and sweet ahead of an interesting talk. The AGM is on 27th March and will be followed this year by a couple of our own members – Peter and Jenny Wilcox – describing their experience of opening up their own garden for the National Gardens Scheme, a gardening charity which raises £millions for good causes. The two of them have put a lot of effort into making their garden one which is well worth a visit. Details of all garden visits are in ‘the yellow book’ available at most local garden centres. On April 24th we will be hosting Peter Ralph, who will be entertaining us with a talk on the wildlife [updated to include wild boar I hope] and the plants of the Forest of Dean. While walking there I have often wondered ‘what is that plant’ – in future I will expect to know. I have bought my seed potatoes now. They are supposed to go in, according to the old wives’ tale, on Good Friday which is late in April this year. If the ground has dried out sufficiently by then I shall hope to be planting them on that day. Failing that, does anyone know how to plant rice? Why not join us one evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge and find out a bit more about many different aspects of gardening. Garden, allotment, patio pots, indoor plants and the plants other people grow – we cover them all. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no To need to be an expert. Hucclecote Townswomen Guild At the January meeting of Hucclecote T G our chairman welcomed members and visitors, to listen to the speaker who showed slides and told us about Maggies Cancer Caring Centres, with special mention of Maggies at Cheltenham. Our speaker gave us a brief history of Maggie Keswick Jencks, who set up the first caring centre in Edinburgh in 1996, during and after undergoing treatment for breast cancer, since when the number of centres has grown to 17 around the UK, usually within hospital grounds close to oncology centres, and which offer practical ,emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, free of charge, and with no medical referral or appointment needed. The centres are warm and welcoming spaces with professional staff on hand to help with any queries and advice about benefits, or eating well, one to one support , courses in relaxation, pamper sessions-or just a quiet few minutes sit with a cup of tea- before, during, or after treatment. The centres rely completely on charitable donations, so in addition to the donation to the speaker, for such an interesting and informative talk we had a collection there and then and managed to raise a sizeable amount to add to that, which hopefully would help furthering the work of this wonderful organisation. The March meeting of Hucclecote TG will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7-30pm, on Thursday 20th March, when the topic for the evening will be “Only Fools & Corsets-Trials of a TV Extra”, by Ms Lorraine Parsloe- which should provide a bit of ‘light relief’ after our A .G.M.! All members and visitors will be made very welcome. Please mention
