Dave’s top tips

Alternative asbestos roof replacement As many will know, asbestos roofs can be a hazard to health if flaking and becoming worn. Generally they are now all getting on in age and looking a little tired and maybe even leaking. So what is a good alternative to replace it with? In fact not only asbestos but also most any other flat roof. One of the fairly new construction materials we use today is polycarbonate roofing sheets. These sheets come in a variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses to suit most roofing solutions. They are a hollow translucent sheet built up from anything from 2 to over 5 layers in general, depending on the thickness required. They are good insulators so help to maintain a more even temperature and they allow light to transmit through readily. These sheets are stabilized against ultra violet light degeneration and are also easy to maintain and keep clean. Many conservatory roofs utilize polycarbonate as they are also very lightweight. Overall they are a very practical solution for many flat roofing situations. With the added benefit of a more even temperature and excellent light transmission, polycarbonate replacement on a garage roof for example could help the gardeners out there that do not have a greenhouse to start the seedlings off in at this time of year. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips to help you with your DIY skills

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.

Chocolate

Have you ever wondered why the two most chocolate orientated times of the year arrive promptly after most people have decided to make resolutions to shed a few pounds and get fit. The opening marketing salvo is aimed at that special person in your life for whom you are obliged to purchase a year's supply of confectionery, squeezed into an equally 'sickeningly' decorated box. No sooner have you recovered your constitution, and your bank balance, Easter bursts onto the scene demonstrating how to disguise chocolate in an infinite variety of egg shapes and sizes. At this point any belt notches recovered in the post-Christmas health kick are swiftly lost with the hope of a slim down for summer rapidly fading. I was watching a television drama recently set during the liberation of Europe, where a young Dutch boy and his father were given a chocolate bar by an American soldier. The little boy had never tasted this before. The smile which appeared on his face as he bit into the bar told of his delight and enjoyment of such a simple gift which for him had such a profound effect. This moment of joy was also mirrored in the face of the father and the American soldier, for whom this was a relatively insignificant gift. Even during these times of economic restraint many of us still have an abundance, which like too much chocolate, will just make us fat and unfit in the way we relate to others in our community. A simple gift of time, resources or finances, however small, can have the same effect as that small bar of chocolate given to the little boy. Not only may it leave a lasting positive effect on the receiver but also bring joy to those around who may catch that moment. May we all have opportunities to display these random acts of kindness and perhaps bring something sweet into the life of someone in need. And may you enjoy every last bit of chocolate you are bought over the next few weeks. Steve Godsell, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote’

Hearts and Hurricanes WI We are a young WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. We promise a friendly and warm welcome. We've seen some new faces at recent meetings and it would be great to increase our membership further. For our March meeting (Weds 11 March) we have a speaker coming to talk to us about boudoir photography. For future meetings we've got things such as chocolate tasting, researching family history and flower arranging planned. In between the monthly meetings we also hold other clubs for WI members: book club, craft club, a dining club, and we organise regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips. We always include time during our meetings for tea (or wine!) and cake and a chance to chat with other members. For more information, please see www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. Why not give it a go - we'd love to see you there! To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Phil Moss was our first guest speaker of 2015, who gave an interesting talk about Beatrix Potter and the Tailor of Gloucester. Phil spoke about Miss Potter, and how she "escaped" her family in London to stay with a cousin in Gloucester; the Tailor who inspired her story, and illustrated his talk to show how many illustrations in her books were based on sketches of actual buildings and street scenes which can still be seen in Gloucester today. Forthcoming speakers include Peter Badham from Badham's Pharmacy, and an evening of nostalgia looking back at "The Fab 50's - Those were the days!" Hucclecote Townswomen's Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea & coffee, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 617701 for more details, or just come along!

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Have you started chitting your potatoes yet? Still enough time, and to get your spuds on Good Friday, as the old saying goes. And if you don’t have them in by Good Friday, no matter, your potatoes may just be a little later this year. By the time you read this my chitting will be well under way, taking advantage of my new potting shed for the first time. Don’t forget the rest of your veg and flower seeds that you need to start on the sunny window sills. Our next meeting is on March 26th and is our AGM at which we will be electing our committee for the coming year. This will be followed by ‘the interesting bit’ which will be a talk on the local Wildlife Trust. With a minimum of effort we can all make our gardens and allotments more attractive to a wide range of wildlife, so this should be an instructive as well as an interesting evening. [Visitors are welcome to this meeting too.] On April 23rd we will be hosting a very welcome return visit by Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries, who will be showing us how to get the best results from our hanging baskets. Last time he spoke to us it was about pruning, and we all went away far more knowledgeable than we were before – we are fully anticipating the same will happen this time. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – I’m not!
