Dave’s top tips

-

All about jig saws

Jigsaws offer the ability to make curved and straight cuts in many materials but it has to be said that, if you have much straight cutting to do, use a circular saw rather than a jigsaw. Jigsaws are not really designed for straight cuts and its much better to stick to curves or intricate work with them. Buying a jigsaw is not the same as buying a good jigsaw! Jigsaws are very versatile tools but the wrong one can make life really hard. If ever there was a case for spending a lot of money on a tool a good jigsaw is where it should be spent. With cheaper jigsaws the blade is held in by a clamp which is tightened by either a screwdriver or an allen key. The threads on the screw allow sideways movement, sideways movement in the blade means it is impossible to get a straight cut even when using a guide. Always buy a jigsaw with a blade lock and release system. It’s also important that the sole plate on your jigsaw is rock solid. The sole plate is designed to be set at different angles and just like the blade holder; this movement can be exaggerated over time leading to poor control over the blade. Cheaper jigsaws use a reciprocal cutting action for the blade. This means simply that the blade just goes up and down. Better jigsaws have a pendulum or orbital motion set into the motor which (on different settings) allows the blade to move backwards and forwards at an angle as well as up and down while you are cutting. This allows for a much more aggressive cut and at the same time, by moving the teeth away from the material, it allows any debris to fall clear of the teeth. This stops the saw from binding on the material and burning rather than cutting through it. A jigsaw needs to be powerful to maintain a decent cut. A variable speed is essential as the difference between cutting timber as opposed to Perspex needs to be about 1000 strokes per minute. If you try and cut Perspex at the same speed as timber, it just melts.

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, and the chance to chat and socialise. We also organise theatre trips and outings throughout the year. Visitors are always welcome; phone Linda on Glos 617701 for more details, or just come along. Our most recent speakers were Brian McBurnie and Richard Auckland, on Barnwood House Hospital, a privately-funded mental institution which opened in the 1830s, and which covered over 200 acres of land, spanning from Barnwood Road to the roundabouts at Walls and C&G, and covering the current Sainsburys and EDF Energy sites. It was self-contained, with its own fire station, farm and nurseries, and by 1881 was large enough to be a Census area in it's own right. It was closed in 1967, the land sold off and buildings demolished, but there are stil some remaining buildings and features to be seen along Barnwood Road today. The Guild was presented with a hardback copy of "Pride of Gloucester" by local author Andrew Thorn. The Guild was one of 16 local groups to contribute suggestions and ideas for the short stories Andrew penned, all of which are linked together in the final chapter. Topics for our forthcoming speakers include, "Chedworth Roman Villa", and "The Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard". Our AGM will be held at the March meeting, when the next years programme of speakers will be announced

‘Beware of the seagulls! A few days ago I was visiting the seaside and had a lovely time. On the way back to the car, a seagull swooped down and sprayed me with seagull poo. I was confident it had mostly missed me and went home happy. It was later that night when unpacking the car that I found my coat hood splattered. Apparently to be caught by a seagull is considered lucky....I'm not sure how that works or if I actually believe it to be true! This month we celebrate Mother's Day and then Easter. In our church we celebrate Mother's Day (or Mothering Sunday) with a lovely service and a small bunch of flowers for each mother or to give to a mother. It is a lovely service and you would be very welcome to join us. A truly momentous moment in history and an occasion that requires a certain level of faith and a holy response. The local churches will all be putting on extra events in the days running up to Easter Sunday and on the day itself. Why not join a local church to celebrate this incredible day. Happy Easter! Andrew Axon - Vicar of St Philip & St James Church Hucclecote’ You are invited to a service Written by the Christian Women of CUBA for the Womens’ World Day of Prayer On Friday 4th March 2016 at St Philip & St James Church Larkhay Road, Hucclecote All are welcome to attend, men, women and people of all ages More information from Val Melville-Smith 01452 617252

Hucclecote Garden Club We had a really good turn-out for our first talk of the 2016/2017 season, when Chris Horsfall, Head Gardener from Colesbourne Park (world famous for its snowdrop display, with over 300 different varieties to see) gave us a history of the Park, and the preparations throughout the year for the wonderful display of snowdrops at their peak in February. It was Chris' first official talk, and we all thought he was a most engaging and entertaining young man, bursting with a fantastic knowledge of snowdrops, their shape, variety, likes and dislikes, and price per bulb. Chris brought along a quite a few examples of the variety of flower, with prices ranging from £3.50 to £25.00. He did tell us that some of the rarer bulbs were selling at £100 per bulb! In the light of his talk some of our Members ventured to Colesbourne to see the snowdrop display 'in the flesh', and were not disappointed. Our speaker in April is Mick Poultney from the West Midlands, his talk is entitled "Compost ready to use in three weeks", which does seem rather incredible, but we shall wait and see. Mick was originally heard by some of our Members at the 2015 Malvern Spring Show and recommended to us as a potential speaker. He has an impressive pedigree in horticulture - a National Vegetable Society Judge, Chairman of Dudley Horticultural Advisory Council, has done three full allotments for the walking disabled, runs the Gardening Club for Caslon Primary School, etc., etc., Through Mick's 35 years in horticulture, trial and error has led him to the reality that compost can be ready to use within three weeks!! Come along and find out. We continue to meet at Hucclecote Community Centre on the fourth Thursday each month, 7.30pm. For more information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News

33

The Winter fun evening went well with an evening full of games and activities, the sleep over afterwards took a little settling down but all asleep by midnight! The Pantomime by the older Scouts was a great success, with boys balancing on high heels as the ugly sisters. Details of the May Day camp at Randwick are now being made, an ideal camp for all the new Scouts and for the older ones to show how to camp as Scouts. For Summer camp at Newquay we have already booked a visit to Lands End and Coasteering (climbing along the rocks - jumping into pools) Scouts started a 4 week session at the ski centre either learning or just skiing if they can already ski. The other Summer activities are being booked; Go Karting, LazerTag, Climbing, Kayaking and Wind Surfing all through the Summer. If it sounds interesting and if you want to come along on a Friday night and find out more and about all the other activities we do - just turn up at 6.45 at the Scout H.Q in Deerpark Road, end of Colewell Avenue (church on the corner), or phone Terry on 521664 for more details about the group.

HUCCLECOTE GUIDING: Hucclecote Guiding were out with the Christmas fire engine again in December and donated ÂŁ690 to the James Hopkins Trust. Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped with the collections on the nights. During the last term the rainbows had their first sleepover at Cowley near Cheltenham, they went ten pin bowling and made lots of Christmas crafts. The Brownies have also had weekends away, completed badge work, made sweets and had a go at Tai Kwando. Guides have raised money for the RNIB, made Christmas cakes and held a Christmas meal at a local restaurant. The local senior section closed but opened a division unit which will include girls from Churchdown, Brockworth, Hucclecote and Upton districts. If you have girls interested in joining any of the unit please contact the district commissioner on Glos 550966 for further information. Rainbows 5-7 years, Brownies 7-10 years, Guides 10-4 years and Senior Section 14yrs +

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Unfortunately our speaker for the evening was taken ill and admitted to hospital. In true WI fashion we improvised and turned the evening into one of games with prizes, this was followed by refreshments and chatter. We have a game of friendly skittles booked for late February and also a game in April. If the weather is kind we hope to arrange a visit to see the snowdrops at Rococo gardens. We have speakers most months on various topics. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. Please mention
